Apparently Garrus is being built up to a "dramatic death" in ME3, or so that's what OXM UK speculates. Yes, speculates. Because it's not based on anything.

Probably because one of the writers tweeted that Garrus will be taking cues from Wash (Firefly) and Mercutio (Romeo and Juliet) in ME3.  Those guys both served the awesome best friend role in their respective tales, but had some of the most memorable death scenes in fiction.
