I'm REALLY hoping and pulling for Garrus to be an m/m option in ME3, but I do have some major concerns as to how it's handled, considering the above posts mentioning how Garrus is already perceived as the "Ultimate Bro." I don't want it damaging straight male gamer opinion of him, since it's a significant demographic - you need to make certain that people aren't going to be alienated in the process and that the growing support of the series and trust in BW is maintained.

DA2 handled the male romances somewhat well by adding transparency to the choices - flirtation was set aside and given a specific marker . At the same time, one or two flirtations led to little impact - it took, I believe, a third flirt to unlock the m/m romance option and even then it still required pursuit. This enables the player to make mistakes in choices and not wind up with the awkward romance found in ME1.

Likewise, if the "flirt" is player-initiated and not character-initiated, then the player is the one who gets to choose whether to develop a relationship that is "bro-fist" or "love." I would argue that the transparency of DA2's love symbol needs to be removed, but that the choice must be clearly flirtatious in wording - and again, if the player thinks it's a joke and selects it, the resulting scene response would be funny indeed, but they would then know not to continue walking down that path lest it turn into a romance.

Ok, I've FINALLY come across a problem that can actually be solved by putting a toggle in the "settings" folder.

I think there's an issue here: the "flirt" icon thing is a little immersion breaking for some people, but it is necessary for others to avoid accidentally triggering a romance they don't want. So you can put a setting in the "Options" menu - "Romance icon [ON] [OFF]" If you put "romance icon 'On,' then you get a DA-style icon warning you away from romance lines. If you select "off" then you can stumble upon them accidentally. I've seen some people advocate the icon system and others say it's annoying, so that's an option it would be good to have both ways.

I also think having romance lines default to the lower left and friendship options default to the upper left (or vice versa) would also help, as long as it was consistent and they were still worded well.

I just got Legion. I <3 Legion. a lot. too much, maybe. but thats... a tale for another day. God I'm such a xenophile.

what the point of this particular comment is .. is this. Legion has 3 fingers on each hand. So do quarians, turians and krogan.
why do all aliens have 3 fingers on each hand? this seems odd to me.

just a random thought.

also, hello to all of you new people and welcome to the best thread on the interwebz.

"You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat." - Albert Einstien

"They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the Internet. And again, the Internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material" - United States Senator Ted Stevens

welcome to this little corner of the series of tubes growing on the back of an incorporial cat.

Frankly, if someone freaks out over the possibility that a 'bro' might be hitting on them (ignoring the fact that ME romances are player-initiated), and this IRREVOCABLY DAMAGES THEIR PERCEPTION OF THE CHARACTER FOREVER!...

...their opinion isn't worth one damn to me.

I have no desire to coddle the thinly veiled homophobia of one player at the expense of a minority that has been left out and mistreated for far too long.

Hey, I'm not homophobic at all and I DO think that changing all characters to bisexual without doing it well enough wouldn't be a good thing. I still can't understand why Bioware can't write a romance for same sex only.

That's harsh. In real life, say you've got a bestest best friend. Then that friend tells you they want to sleep with you. That isn't going to damage the friendship if you don't feel the same way? At the very least it'll make things awkward. It's not necessarily homophobic.

doesn't matter if that friend is the same or the opposite sex as you, i think. but I also think its going to only cause problems if you let it. but it doesnt have to change anything. i've been in this situation. on both sides of it. and it really only is a problem if you allow it to be.

I think most of us would take it as a compliment if someone is interested in us even if it.s not mutual. Gender is a minor detail. But yes, it can be terribly akward at the same time.

But now we are getting off topic a bit, back to our dextro bros perhaps?

Edit: CGG, it's from the reliable source of all things turian (sometimes disturbing in a good way) DeviantArt.

Exactly this; Garrus has been developed as straight and perceived as straight for two games in the series.  They have to handle this carefully if he's to be an m/m relationship possibility in ME3 because if done like Anders, for example, it WILL make things very awkward for some players.

I was actually under the impression that turians had really short tongues, like parrots.  To reduce the risk of biting it off.

Here's my thing:  I personally don't give a flying fig about a character's sexual orientation.  If he or she is gay, great.  If bi, great.  If straight, great.  All equally fine.  HOWEVER, suddenly going out of their way to point out that someone is bi seems too much like trying to shoehorn the character into everyone's perception.  In the process, the character gets watered down in my eyes, and I consider that very disappointing.  BW has always made strong characters with specific personalities.  One's orientation is a big part of one's personality.  That's my whole issue.

This was always my impression too. It seems like those sharp pointy teeth on the sides and the beak-like lips would cause a lot of cuts unless their tongues were shorter.

Also, as I've said before, it isn't the gender of people flirting with me that's a problem, it's the NUMBER of them.

I'm on the edge of being weirded out by the five people who already flirt with me in these games. Raise that number to nine, or twelve, and it starts to look a little ridiculous. That's how a lot of people feel, even people who enjoy romances with both genders (I am playing through my Renegade Femshep Liara romance right now, and I'd do a paragon ManShepThane romance if I could.)

This. I can't say it better, because english is not my mother language, so I tend to condense my thoughts and I never express myself well enough.

Edit: about the tongue... I would say it's huge:

The people naysaying the gay Garrus option can just deal with it. I think it's pretty damn clear what the dialog choices will be for hitting on Garrus as a man. If you guys think otherwise, you're either stupid or you're just being passive aggressive and a tool. As femshep I think we could all figure out what the trigger was for hitting on him, so it's really -not that hard- to figure out what you're getting into.

And if you're a man and you can't figure out what lines are not going to result in sexual tension with Garrus, you're too young to be playing Mass Effect.

I will enjoy having gay relations with Garrus, and I simply don't care about any of you who are uncomfortable about it. Tough. ****. I was uncomfortable being forced into a straight romance to get the character I wanted, so you guys can just damn well deal with it.

You have no idea how much I wanted $100 to slap down on a custom Garrus plushie. Alas, I do not have that kind of money that I would spend $100 on a plushie of any sort. :P But if BW would mass-produce one that cost less than $50... :3

Boring realism! Rule of cool says that turian tounges can be long just because it's cool.

I agree. I don't have a problem with any of the ME characters becoming gay or bi, it's only a problem when they become gay or bi all of a sudden and so out of character that it becomes out of place and may seem like only fan-service, instead of characterization or plot.

Edit: Personally, I'm for Bi Garrus, as long as he doesn't have to be out-of-character to do so.
