A lot of people would prefer not to deal with the romance in Mass Effect 1, either to save themselves for another romance partner in Mass Effect 2 or simply because they don't want the romance. But how do you avoid the romance and still get most of the dialogue conversations from the squadmates? For instance, how can a male Shepard get the same conversations that a female Shepard gets from Ashley?

Nilfalasiel from the Garrus Support Thread has you covered.
*Click Here for the Original Post* - posted on an old Garrus Support Thread
*Click Here for a More Current Version* - posted in the Clan Vakarian group (private group)

To summarize:
1. Ashley - In the first conversation with her, when she questions having aliens on the ship, choose the middle-LEFT option on the dialogue wheel. From then on, the conversations progress as it would for a female Shepard. She'll call you "Commander" rather than "Skipper."

2. Kaidan - In the first conversation with him, he'll apologize for rambling. Pick the bottom-right option on the dialogue wheel. From then on, the conversations progress as it would for a male Shepard. He'll end his conversations with "Commander" rather than "I'd like that."

3. Liara - In her second conversation with you, she'll ask if there's something going on between you and Ashley/Kaidan. Tell her that you're just friends. Then she'll ask if there's something between you and her. Pick the middle-right option that lets her know you're not interested in her in that way. She'll call you "Commander" rather than "Shepard."

Again, all the credit goes to Nilfalasiel for this.

That's the only downside, though. Ecael is such a Photoshop god.

God-Tier information right there.

You can also just mod the save file of a ME2 game and do a NG+ to remove any romance from ME1.

Yeah, but why deny someone the chance to play ME1 yet again? :P

All you need to do is be rude when LI approaches you when Normandy is grounded and then reject LI right before Ilos. Worked for me.

If you reject the LI right before Ilos, it's going to count as a romance in ME2.

The idea behind the guide was how to avoid the romance being as little as a dick about it as possible, though.

Because some people have played it to death and beyond.

Thank you Pacifien, for providing this information and linking to Nilfalasiel's post. It will help a lot of people, including me. I got ninjaromanced by Ashley as M!Shepard, unfortunately.

I'm replaying ME1 right now, told Ashley she's "out of the line" after she questioned Shepard about having aliens in Normandy. But later after some conversations she started calling Shepard a "Skipper". Will this lead to romance?

Also for Ashely picking the bottom right dialog option near the very end of that conversation instead of the middle left towards the beginning works too.

I think as long as you don't get the 'looking forward to it skipper' line at the end of dialog, you should be in the green. I just finished a play through where she called him skipper in conversation a few times but the former didn't happen nor was there a forced romance.

Yeah, as long as she's not calling you "skipper" at the end of the convo, you're good. She'll call you "skipper" during some convos, but that's nothing to worry about. As long as it doesn't happen at the end.

I have a more detailed, more organized version of that "no romance" post of mine that Pacifien linked to, but unfortunately, it's over in a group (ie. not visible to everyone). I could copy-paste it in here though, if anyone wants something less messy than my original post.

I switched out the original post for the group post. I didn't know the group post wouldn't be visible by everyone, though. Damn, now I have to find the original post link again!

ETA: Got it! Updating.

Romancing needs to have a whole separate talk-tree in the dialogues. Like answers in purple are romancings. It's too simple as it is now, Imagine a Dragon Age depth to characters but in Mass Effect, whoooeeeee what a game it would become.

Hey I've played it to death and beyond but every so often you see that Shep you really like sitting at 57 or 58 and you think if I do a quick run I can replay this bad-boy with all the bells and whistles bonus for importing a lvl 60 character with all the trimmings

Um, how does one go about removing a me1 romance from a me2 savegame file?

That's great!

Is there a similar guide for ME2?

I still don't dare to speak to Tali, she'll jump on me with her 'dashing captain' stuff, and since I can shoot her in the helmet, I need alternate methods. :)

(Usually, I use the come clean during her trial method, tell the admiralty the truth, which works fine and a somewhat paragon option anyways.)

I believe you can use the gibbed save game editor for this. If you can insert the romance using it, I don't see why you can't just reverse the process.
