Thank you thank you thank you. I still play ME1 like crazy (31 playthroughs and counting) and I've still never figured it out. I guess I'm too nice irl to be a jerk in a videogame X/

One option that I didn't see discussed is you can choose to pursue a romance with either Kaidan or Ash, but when the choice comes at Virmire you let the LI die. I haven't experimented with that yet, but I will try it on my next ME playthrough (I'm replaying it ever since I saw the ME3 teaser last month).

Sorry if this was a thread necro, I thought it would be an interesting way of 'stopping' an ME romance in a more tragic way than going 'I'm not interested in you Kaidan/Ash.' From an RP perspective, it can be a really tougher choice than it would normally be, if say you had to leave your LI behind to go back to the bomb and make sure it's secure (or the reverse, leave the LI at the bomb so that you can save the other guy and the Salarians who are pinned down).

I did this with my maleShep. The only thing that happens is that he is alone at the lockers. Other than that, there didn't seem to be any moment of reflection or grief on sending his potential lover to her death. That rather disappointed me.

This, then did not seem to have any effect on ME2. You are free to pursue any LI you want. Well, you are anyway, but you don't have to feel bad about it. ;)

If I ever get back to that play-through, maleShep is working on shagging Miranda.

Huh. I thought maybe in case you let the LI die on Virmire they'd have someone come up to you, whether it be Kaidan or Liara or one of the crew.

I was hoping for a similar moment like what happened in Alpha Protocol during the Rome assignment.

I'll still do it anyway because letting the LI die on Virmire is actually one thing I've never done in all the playthroughs of ME that I've done.

Regarding Ashley either the "Commander / Skipper" thing isn't a correct observation or else you can accidentally restart the romance later, because I started by choosing the "out of line" comment, then later on when I questioned her about her family (sister, dad, poetry etc.), she started calling me skipper.

Awesome, now i just need the balls to turn kaidan down. I try so hard, but he gets me every time with those eyes.

Keep a picture of or a voice file with a certain someone you intend to save yourself for. Or have a trinket which makes you associate strongly to another character. E.g. An associate of mine has a mass of those small, magnetic orbs that reminds him of Legion and by extension Tali. Should help you keep on track.

Promising yourself to finally get him in Shepard's dirty hands in ME3 also works well. Yeah, I'm optimistic

Wow, after a year and a half with ME2 (and then some), I finally come across this info as to how to avoid ME1 romances.

I have no idea how this never made it onto the wiki, nor why it isn't detailed in every single guide. One thing I know for certain, though: this topic should be stickied. Truly God-Tier information.
