....but I've tried EVERY solution I have come across. I've spent more than 5 hours now trying to find a way to play ME1, to no avail. Every time I start up Mass Effect(I've tried running Steam and ME in
administrator mode) the splash screen comes up, then it goes to a black
screen, loads for a while, then just sits there. I downsize it, and a
General Protection Fault message pops up. This is the exact message:
General
protection fault!
History: GMatrix20::Swap() Address =

I have tried uninstalling and
updating OpenAL and turning off UAC
Here's my pc info:
processor:
Pentium® Dual-Core CPU T4400 @ 2.20GHz
RAM: 3gb
System type:
64-bit
Graphics Card: Mobil Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Operating
System: Windows 7 Home Premium
If anyone knows of a fix, that
would be great, but even knowing what the problem is would put me in a
better position than I am now. This is the only bioware game that doesn't work on my pc. I have Jade Empire, KOTOR1&2, and ME2. They all work fine, save for a few graphical glitches and lag here and there. I'm rather upset, because I'd rather not play ME2 without my own hard-earned ME1 save to import.
I know you're all probably tired of hearing it....

Mobil Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family
This is below system requirements. As it says in the system reqs, you need an ATI or Nvidia graphics card, with sufficient power, to run an Unreal Engine game like ME1 or ME2.
Intel chips can run some games yes, but they lag behind literally by years in their capabilities.

It's ironic that you tried everything but the most basic stuff. You should always read the system requirements before buying a game, except when you have a Mobile Intel chipset like you, in which case you shouldn't bother buying current-gen games.
How were you even able to run Mass Effect 2 on that PC? You're the third person I've heard of so far who was able to at least run it, but running it fine? Are you sure that Intel chipset is all you've got?

I'm pretty sure his problem is the integrated graphics chip. I had the same problem with my Dell Latitude. Integrated chips are terrible for games and don't run much.

I don't know how other Unreal games run on bad hardware but Mass Effect simply won't run smooth. The Intel Mobile chipset shouldn't work except in very rare cases and still the game would be unplayable because of bad framerates. It's miles below the system requirements.
And what's this crap about being more constructive? The OP doesn't meet the system requirements and there's nothing he can do about it except upgrade his hardware. Everyone should read the system requirements.
From the system requirements:
Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series(6800GT or better)
Intel doesn't make graphics cards, only integrated graphics. Also, the Geforce 6800GT is much faster than any Intel chipset in existence.
Also, there's an edit button. Use it.

Eowli,
just because it's the same engine, it doesn't mean it uses the same libraries/plugins/shaders.

Try deactivating UAC from control panel, see if that helps. And even if you're below requirements i think the game should at least run. I tested that with my laptop and it worked fine on 640x480 res.
