My specs are as is:
3.0GHz Core Duo
2GB DDR2 400MHz RAM
8800GT
Anti-Aliasing is defaulted off in my nVidia Control Panel

Whenever I play Mass Effect, I got low framerates (probably about 10~20fps) in combat or areas with lots of detail/textures.  I played around w/ all sorts of settings, checked driver updates and reviewed the tweakguide.com guide.  The best result I got was when i played in Windowed mode.  However, now it's back to getting low FPS, even in Windowed mode.  As far as i'm aware and have read, my system should have no prob with this game.  A somewhat related note - I played Mass Effect 2 for about 5 mins and got 60 fps at all times.

My settings are as is:
Windowed - Yes
Particles - High
Res - 11x8 (4:3 ratio) - not my native monitor's res.  My monitor is 16x9, but the 11x8 is from windowed mode, I assume
Textures - High
Filtering - Anisotropic
Motion Blur - off
V-sync - off
Film grain - off

Thanks for any input or advice!

400MHz RAM?
Is your PCI-E at lower than x16?

Check this, as a Core2D with 400MHz feels much exotic. Unless you're giving the speed divided by two.

Also, I had such problems, when my PCI-E was dropping to x1 because of bad connection to the motherboard (plugging the video card out & in helped).

Though, ME2 running fine is a little weird, which kind of invalidates my suggestions altogether.

In the end, info that you gave is barely enough to tell anything yet.

Well, I suppose my PCI-E is x10? SIW says 0x10DE under PCI ID.

Also, I doubled my RAM (well, to 3.5GB as i use XP) w/ identical RAM in the correct slot. I actually noticed a slight improvement in the citadel (like usual 15 fps went up to 17 fps), but nothing significant. Doesn't RAM usually take off some burden of the vid card's memory, or no?

The RAM wasn't for ME, I just wanted more =D

PCI ID is not the parameter you're looking for. Besides, 0x10DE is a hexadecimal number 4318.

Try using CPU-Z and post back all the possible detail you can get out of there. PCI-E speeds will be specifically named like this and will be just an "x16" or with some other number.

As for more RAM, 2GB is not that much. With ~4GB the OS has do to less DiskRAM (and possibly VRAM) paging, that's why you see an increase in performance. Either way, if RAM were to take any significant work for the video card, you'd see an insane performance drop. You might think this is the problem here, but it's just one of many, and the first thing to do is check what's happening in the video card and around it.

Also, get GPU-Z and see what's the load to the graphics controller.

So, you need to:
1) Get CPU-Z and GPU-Z.
2) Start the game, go to some low FPS place.
3) Post back all readings (aka tabs) from CPU-Z and GPU-Z, while the game is running.

Here are the tabs for when I was in the heart of The Citadel.  Probably getting about ~15 fps (my xfire doesn't function properly w/ ME and doesn't track FPS).   I don't know what a lot of it means, so thanks for any incite    :D

Starting to look at it.
The hardware seems to be running normal (doh), but the GPU Load in the second screenshot is constant... zero... and using... 15MB. Ugh.

So:
1) I need you to confirm that during all this time that fits in the GPU Load graph, you maximized/whatever and played the game for some time at least once, before doing this screenshot. There should be a GPU Load spike.
2) Post back some tests (not necessarily numbers) how much does the performance vary, if you change specific settings from high to low and vice-versa for all of them individually. Depending on that, it kinda seems ME falls back to half or full software rendering.

1 - Those charts i posted were pretty much me just playing for a few mins. Long enough to get from 1 planet to the Citadel then run to the middle of the Citadel. I wasn't involved in any action or let it sit idle for a long duration. I re-tested with GPU-Z and played ME for about 30 another time i ran GPU-Z and the memory used peaked to 37MB (that i saw) and the GPU load was at 0% the entire time (that i saw)

2 - I changed the res, texture details, filtering mode, and even particle effects up and down. It appears texture and filtering made the biggest differences by themselves. My res i only changed within my monitor ratio of 16:9. My best perforamce was w/ filtering at Point and textures to Low w/ lowest 16:9 ratio resolution. In citadel I got about 25~30fps w/ a few hiccups here or there. In combat it was about the same. In the corridor between Joker and Galaxy Map, i probably got about ~20 fps, whereas I usually averaged about ~10 fps w/ max settings. But come to think of it, I've never tried High Texture with Point filtering, I don't think...

But I still shouldn't have to run on low settings just to get a tolerable ~25 fps, right? I've read a few other pages w/ similar problems as me w/ similar specs. I've heard possibly the NEW vid card drivers may not like ME/8000 series doesn't like ME, maybe ME is just a bad xbox port, etc.

EDIT: wait a sec... there's a check box... "Continue refreshing this window while GPU-Z is in the background" on the GPU Load tab. Check it and do the GPU Load test again.

GPU-Z still shows 0% for GPU Load, even w/ the check box is checked. Are you familiar w/ RivaTuner? I've had that, but never really figured out how to use it but i know it can monitor GPU load.

Do you think part of the problem is that there is no GPU load?

UE contains built-in graphics card unrelated software rendering, and DirectX (which ME uses) also is able to do software rendering by itself, which, given that the texture filtering is what causes most slowdown, we can assume is totally happening. Yes, no GPU Load must be part of it. Just to make sure if this GPU-Z even works at all, play a different game and see how the readings spike.

Next step would be to look into forcing ME/UT3/UE into hardware rendering or resolving this incompatibility problem by reinstalling the DX9 that comes with ME setup disc.

It seems there's a software problem. In theory, reinstalling something (yes, some unknown thing) should fix it.

Next steps:
1) Reinstall DirectX 9 that came with ME setup files. If there ain't any, use this: http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en
2) Run the game and see if anything changes.
3) Exit the game. Press Windows+R, type "dxdiag" and hit enter. Click "Save All Information". It should take some while for it to collect all info. Post back the heap of text saved file contains.
4) We'll see if anything's wrong with DX, but trying an older driver might be also a good idea, though, not much of an idea I'd like too, but worth a try.

k, i'll do the reinstall and see if that works probably in a couple days.

quick note - played another game (older Titan Quest game), GPU load was at 0% all times, memory usage peaked at 210mb for like a couple secs. So it appears there's no GPU load all around or GPU-Z doesn't work?

Probably the drivers are half dead. Before I see the dxdiag output, can't say much more.

P.S. You need "Continue while in background" to be checked at all times in GPU-Z.

I know about the Continue while in background =D

I reinstalled ME and DX9 from the site (I dl'd ME from Steam), no change to the gameplay.

here is the DXdiag:

you should run some benchmarks for your system and compare them to similar systems on some other forums.

3dmark06 has a built in default free program.

first determine that your system as a whole is running right and not a mass effect problem.

Although I could swear I've played the game w/o Xfire running, I just played w/o Xfire running and got probably near ~50 fps, even ~30 fps in Citadel. I've heard of xfire killing games' frames before, though it's never happened to me. Let's hope that is the case for ME.

But also, yeah I am in the middle of cleaning up my system. Been getting BSODs recently and it's currently being resolved.

Yes, it appears it was xfire slowing down ME for whatever reason. I have no idea why xfire does it, but like i said, i've heard it before from other people, so i guess it finally got me?

I'm still a bit curious about the no GPU load

Xfire has been guilty of doing the same thing to / for many games, ever since it first became relatively popular.
