I've always been a huge sucker for twists.  I love when stories blow your mind with twists that drip with irony.  After more than a few times of playing both games, I came up with a couple of possible twists I feel could take place in ME3:

The Geth:  Villains to Heroes twist:
I think the Geth are probably THE key to defeating the reapers.  These guys were the baddies you killed in hordes in the first game.  They were seen as mindless machines easily conned into working for the things that will end the world.... Then the second game came along and sort of humanized the Geth.  Turns out you were fighting a minority of Geth that wanted the shortcut from Sovereign to what the other Geth are trying to do.  The Geth's ultimate plan is to make something to upload all Geth to (something that must be similar to a reaper since Sovereign was offering a Reaper body as payment to the heretics).  I think that whatever the Geth are making is the secret weapon to use against the Reapers. This is because the Geth are not following the path the reapers want life to take.  They are not following the path determined by the use of the mass relays (being that they completely isolate themselves aside from legion) and they do not follow the path of organics (being that they are synthetic).... Anyways, these guys are pretty much the only race (aside from humanity) that you can't really cross off as possible allies (krogans crossed off it you kill wrex or destroy genophage research, rachni crossed off if you kill them, turians, salarians, and asari probably crossed off with the death of their political leaders in the council, etc.).  The Geth can't be crossed off because they can be allied with either a paragon (befriending them) or a renegade (enslaving/repurposing them) path.  Idk about you, but I think an ironic ending in which the guys you've been killing forever turn out to be your lifesaver seems pretty frickin sweet.

Shadow Broker - Liara twist:
The SB has been the subject of alot of theories ranging from he/she/it being an agent for the reapers, somehow defying itself by being TIM, being Miranda's dad,  to it being none other than Barla Von (which, if actually true, would make me chuckle a bit).  Some have even speculated that it is Liara's father (which seems a bit cliche to me).  What I think would be a bit less cliche, yet still have the same sort of ironic feel to it, is if the SB was somehow deeply connected with the Protheans.  Maybe it is a Prothean AI.  Maybe an actual Prothean somehow survived for 50,000 years (screw lifespans. who needs em).  I think it would be perfect to Liara's whole "I'll kill the SB" routine if it turns out the thing she wants to destroy is the very LAST "living" thing of a civilization she spent her career as an archeologist preserving and studying.  It would be like Mordin's "doctor who kills people" persona or Thane's "spiritual assassin" thing.  Think of how sad she was when you had to leave Vigil and the mysteries of the Protheans on Ilos and then think of her being the one that has to destroy any hope of learning more about them... Man I would love it if this twist happens.

Aaaaaaaaaaanyways... those are just my theories of twists that could happen in ME3 (sorry if they've been done before).  Add your own twists or just point out the flaws in my crappy ideas. Doesn't matter to me...  I just want the third game to come out so I don't have to speculate and can finally figure out how close (or how far away) my crazy ideas have come to the truth.

This organic lesser being is surprisingly right. The Geth Collective is the only way of getting rid of the Codename "Reaper" Species without sacrificing approximately 94.5723354 percent of the Galaxy's organic population.

No Shepard you are the Reaper! Sorry I had too.

Anyways I think a good twist would bet hat Shepard has Reaper implants and that is why he is the only one who can beat the Reapers.

I like your idea about the Geth. Once you get Legion you seem to see another side of the Geth. What if the Geth were the real reapers and those giant machines were just decoy's lol.

According to who? The geth don't have infinite resources.

The Protheans will be shoe-horned into the plot somehow, AGAIN, just to make Liara seem important.

Shepard joins the Reapers after it becomes obvious TIM and Cerberus have taken control of the galaxy, and it's the only way to save it.

I really like your idea about the geth becoming heros. Maybe from there you could have a point in the story where you need to choose between going with the geth or quarians on something. That could be especially powerful if you were in a relationship with Tali but sympathized with the geth.

The main story of Mass Effect 2 promised a lot more than it delivered. If I hadn't read the reviews I would have assumed that there WOULD have been some incredible twist in the main story, because Bioware always seems to tease you in that way during the main missions. There were lots of moments in the ME2 story that seemed promising but never went anywhere, like Cerberus' mysterious supply of resources, the Illusive Man's suspicion the Alliance is up to something, Kaidan claiming that commander Shepard has "changed" because he's working with Cerberus, and the dead Reaper messing with people's memories, etc. The last two especially made it feel like the game was always on the verge of pulling a Bioshock-esque plot-twist on the player but never did.

So I guess what I'd like to see in ME3 is that either the Alliance or Cerberus is engaged in some sort of conspiratory cover-up and is FAR more intimately acquainted with the Reapers than they want to the public to believe. Also what might be nice is learning that Shepard is under some form of mind control, either from his time on the derelict Reaper, or his implants (although Miranda said that, despite her wishes, Shepard wasn't implanted with a "control chip")

I'd also like to see it revealed the Reapers aren't exactly what they claim to me. Frankly, I don't think anyone can be a good villian if you never know their motive, and if the Reapers were so far above humans, I doubt Shepard could get anywhere close to beating them. Maybe they are a geth type race that started suffering from delusions of grandeur.

Also, I'd always felt the various race in ME2 felt too similar, as they seem to share every trait that seems it should be peculiarly human (smiling to express happiness, kissing, crying, etc.) It would be nice if it turned out they were somehow more intertwined in history than they thought, probably because of the Reapers (they "impose order on the chaos of organic evolution" after all).  The Reapers might want them to have an easier time communicating and relating to eachother so they would become dependant on one another and could be taken down with one fell swoop.

I don't think Shepard will have Reaper implants since if s/he did, Harbinger would have just assumed control and have been done with it.

I'm not sure if this has ever been speculated, or if this topic has been discussed, but based on what I know, here's a theory...

The Reapers say that they are eternal, and exist just because they do. What if we find out that the Reapers were created by a race (I'll call them X), similar to how the Quarians created the Geth, as a kind of war-machine to fight against opposing races, and their programming made it so that they would destroy any civilisation that would rise up to challenge X.

Eventually Reapers began to think for themselves, and learned how to create other Reapers, learning from techniques they observed from X, so that now they can replicate themselves, but as we have seen this requires a huge number of organics.

So, to survive, they enslaved X, stole their technology, and escaped into darkspace, using X to build more of themselves. 50K years later, they return, enslaving the most prominant races, and using them to create more until eventually, after numerous cycles, they have the army that they have now. They aren't doing it simply because they enjoy it. They do it because they were told to...

Thoughts?

I love where you started with that, Dinnertable, but if they are just following their programming, then how could they be thinking for themselves at the same time? And if they are just building an army, then why would they find their motives so unexplainable to the "mere mortals".

I think what would be best is if "X" still exists, but keeps its existence secret so it won't be attacked. That's why the Reapers can't explain themselves (they're programmed not to give up any information.)

Yeah, I've been thinking along the same lines. I think it's either that, or a race uploaded their minds into machines because they hated the idea of being mortal. They might even think of their cyclic return as something good - a favour they do to the mortals. Uploaded into Reapers, they are immortal.

Good point. Never thought of that.
Maybe 'X' lives in a "Dark Citadel" that has been mentioned before in other threads. So, if it does exist, and Shepard does go there, he will have to fight X and stop them from releasing the Reapers.

There was a planet can't remember the name but it said something to this extent. I'm paraphrasing and simplifying.

Beings of Light created the Reapers. They came to some volus in a "Vision" and he's been searching the planet they told him to for decades for a weapon to use against the Reapers. The base of ME3's plot was told to you in ME1 if you looked hard enough.

Ah, found it.

As far as this Geth theory goes, I feel like something is missing from it.  I also feel there is an error.  Still, the following is all just speculation based on what Shepard has seen.

I think the Quarians may be required somehow for the Geth to reach their full potential and vice versa.  How is not yet clear, or sure.  Some observations though:

1.)  I will say that the Geth seem to have never been indoctrinated.  The Heritics were "reprogrammed" to work for the Reapers.  Perhaps the Geth are the answer to the the problem of indoctrination.
2.)  At the same time, each Geth mobile platform goes into the field with a large number of Geth.  Legion reported his body contained 1183 individual Geth even with the big hole in his chest.  Tactical co-ordination might be a bottleneck problem for the Geth.
3.)  Harbinger repeatedly said in ME2 that Humans needed to "acsend" into Reapers.  We really don't know if this was just propaganda or if maybe there was an actual reason for it.  What is Harbinger anyway?  Reaper?  Prothean?  Something else?  We do know that Reapers have both organic and hardware components.
4.)  Perhaps in ME3, we will see the Geth create a new form of mobile platform.  The nature of it would be a suit of Battle Armor that takes advantage of both Organic (Quarian or Human) as well as Geth operators at the same time.

The error is that the Geth can possibly be crossed off Shepard's list of possible allies if the Quarians go to war with the Geth.  In this scenerio, this would be a victory for the Reapers since neither the Quarians nor the Geth would have sufficient troops and resources left to fight the Reapers after the it was over.

Just some thoughts...Image IPB

Maybe this "vision" was a recording left centuries ago by  the race that created the Reapers because they underestimated their power and conciousness. They tried to destroy them by making this weapon in secret, but the Reapers found out and fought to defend themsleves and escaped, so this message was left by the Beings of Light just before being destroyed.

Or maybe, the Reapers have enslaved the Beings of Light and are using them to allow them through the mass relay from Darkspace, but refuse to mention the Beings as they believe them to be below the Reapers. This weapon was created as a contingency plan in case thr Reaper project went wrong. Before being able to use, they were enslaved, but left a recording telling later species how to help them was left.

Actually, I feel like ME2 shoehorned them OUT of the plot, and shoehorned the Human-Reaper in. Though, since Sovereign DID promise the geth a Reaper body... there's finally some decent motivation. But still. Why humans?
Ugh. It'd be nice to actually have a good ol' return to the Protheans.

I think the Quarians going to war with the Geth wouldn't necessarily cross them off as allies because I always felt that the war was going to be inevitable. I'm thinking that Admiral Xen starts a war with or without the support of the admiralty board because, judging by her message, she has found enough research to make her dreams of enslaving the Geth a reality. It would also set up a nice little Paragon/Renegade fork after you inevitably find her and talk Xen down or kill her. Would you keep her formula for enslaving the Geth or would you destroy it and simply hope the Geth like you enough to ally themselves with you?
