Thats a choice; your argument is invalid

RPG == ROMANCE PLAYA GAME == don't deny it

Welcome to video games, another conveyor belt of entertainment.

Lol. No, let me explain.

Example: human noble origin story - by the end I have to become a Grey Warden no matter what.

But I am very clearly placed in a situation where I am shown that this is the only way out. Not only that, I am able to object. To even say, flat out, "NO."

It happens anyway, but it feels more believable to me and makes me feel like my character is my own. (The other examples you provided are avoidable - for instance they've never happened to me. The instances in ME2 I mention are unavoidable. And I haven't finished the game, crap, I liked Riordan...)

Now compare this to Shepard's first discussion with TIM. I do not feel as though I am placed in a situation where joining TIM is the only way out or the only thing I can do. And indeed when Shepard says, "If this is true I would consider helping you" I want to go, "Wtf?!" I feel like that decision is being made for me.

I really do hope the devs read threads like this. Because it represents what people, not fanboys, think of their games. I enjoyed ME2 enough to play it 6 times. But it was the combat along with the ability to choose different classes that brought me back. That's where the meat of the game is. That is where they made the most significant improvements, not the story, or the RPG elements.

Not sure I'm following what you mean here.

The romantic sex scenes were downgraded in ME2, and the non-stop shooter combat upgraded (or so BioWare and the fanboys think). Which kinda proves my point.

Name one area in Mass Effect 1 that isn't a shooting gallery or doesn't double as a shooting gallery.

It's all shooting in Mass Effect. I don't see why people continue to deny this for only one game.

Are we really playing Prove There Is A Scenario In Which No One Will Complain?

In that case no, there is no such scenario and never will be.

Or are we actually trying to sift through all the people who are just whining for whining's sake to find the ones who actually have something meaningful and productive to contribute with the things they point out?

The latter, most likely.

If BioWare chooses to ignore its fans and listen to professional critics only, that's their prerogative.

If BioWare chooses to ignore both fans and critics and change things their own special way, that's also their prerogative.

Neither would bother me.

In theory I disagree, but in practicality you are right and it is why I continue to do playthroughs. I have finished 2, have 2 more at 80%, and another 3 at 10%-20% complete. It is one of the very few non strategy games I have ever played through more than twice.

Uh, yes.  That's exactly what wer'e doing.  I totally knew that. :P

But seriously, trying to find meaning and such in an internet forum is something that just doesn't happen.  Never will, too many different people with moods and opinions that may or may not be sincere.

In essence you're right, though these forums are better than most.. or I find it easier to determine here what's trolling, what's a joke, what's sincere and what's people just having a conversation.

The shooting in Mass Effect 1 was a minigame. a cute shooter like minigame. With such classic shooter elements as ducking and sniping. It was used to make some plot progression where appropriate.

ME2 was advertised as a shooter, yet they took the ducking move away and nerfed down the sniping. But ME2 is still a shooter, and the RPG elements such as the plot, is used to lead you from section A to section B to section C of the shooting gallery. And the "cool" macho bullsh*t (which I personally can stand and enjoy only in Schwarzenegger movies) Shepard barks at the baddies on every level to pepper the eye candy of the "barrel of gasoline" explosioins.

Mass Effect Launch Trailer

Care to count all the gunshots, "shooter elements" and explosions in that one?

You still haven't pointed out any place in Mass Effect 1 that wasn't a shooting gallery.

Personally, I don't care how close to full nudity will the sex scene in a computer game be. I'd consider it a free bonus... So i kinda agree with the Woo's comments. But wish to point out that he conveniently forgets to mention the reasons why the mature individuals that BioWare is so full of decided to downgrade the sex scenes in ME2. And, barring the possibility that the said mature individuals are religious fundamentalists, the reasons that come to my mind are purely commercial. Same as the reasons for putting partial nudity all over the game, including the locations that are supposed to be depressurized.

I remember a dev came on one time and talked about this - the way they collected information from fans on these forums.

I remember he said, obviously we filter out the ones who are just whining to whine, and focus on the ones who have something real to contribute, but that they always enjoyed hearing from fans worth hearing from and tried to improve based on what they heard.

What makes a good RPG anyway? I don't mean what computer game managed to get an RPG right, but what are the actual components you feel a good RPG needs in order to qualify as such? Bonus points if you name the component and then mention a very specific element of a game that demonstrates the point.
