Hello there. I finally bought this game and I just wanted to express my utter shock at how difficult I'm finding this game. I never realized I'd play a game that made me feel so stupid.

My first character was a warrior and it seemed to go fine until I reached the Ogre in the tower. After 15 fails, I gave up so I decided to create an Elf rogue. It all went bad here at the first fight in the stockaded hall but after 20 goes, I managed to succeed. The next corridoor fight, I failed 20 times. During this I was trying different tactics combinations to no avail but as soon as I flicked the 'normal' to 'easy' option I did it with relative ease.

Is there an idiot's guide to DA:O or should I go back to playing something simple like Neverwinter Nights?:crying:

... What's the difficulty setting?

Edited because my reading comprehension skills are lacking at this moment. Stacking up on health potions is the lazy way to go, and put the command in the tactics for your party members to drink them when their health is running low.

I recommend easy... By the time you reach the High Dragon, you will want to rip out your hair.

I think part of the problem for me initially was that "easy" is way too easy, to the point of just letting it be auto-pilot. But once you play around more and figure out what tactics work and such, you get the hang of it.

Ain't no shame in playing on easy - I do it too. Though the time I played Resident Evil 5 on the easiest setting and still got my rear end handed to me all the time, I didn't exactly feel on top of the world. Posted Image

I found DAO had a steep learning curve, but then once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy. Like you, I had problems when I hit the ogre, and then switched my game over to easy. I play on Hard/Nightmare now, and since I've learned what I'm doing, it's pretty much a cake walk.

Good to know I'm not the only one who finds the game challenging. XD

I always felt bad when I turned the difficulty down to casual for the tough bosses... though on my second playthrough I managed to go the entire game on normal.

Believe it or not, having a bow was a major help to me, even though I had no bow skills at all. Having a few ranging options is very nice, especially for them bosses that can grab you.

Generally, I always avoid 'easy' and play on 'normal' but now, as soon as I've put it on easy, I defeated the Ogre first go. Alistair got downed but I could have healed him during the fight.

By the way. Nice drama scenes. Is there an option to replay movie scenes?

Not that I know of, though there's always youtube.  I end up creating lots of saves as I play, if I want to see cutscenes again.  If you haven't played before, I suggest quicksaving right before you change areas.  If it plays a cutscene you like, reload and make a hard save.  The same goes for exiting areas b/c sometimes scenes will play when you leave an area.  Again, if you like the scene, got back and make a hard save.

I don't get the stigma with playing a game on easy.

if you're not enjoying the game on the difficulty you're playing..lower it..you are playing to have fun...you're not competing in some stupid contest.

I typically play on normal when I start a game..but I have no qualms about lowering it if I'm finding a spot too difficult or just not enjoying the tediousness of it. Now if you drop it to easy and are still pulling your hair out..dunno what to tell ya.

No shame in it man, I started on easy until I got used to it. Now I play on Hard. Just make sure you have a Healer mage. You need your mages leveled properly. And most of the starting atributes your companions get are bad. So that doesn't help either.

I'm with you man, first playthough was definitely was definitely on easy. Once you get the hang of it it gets easier but still. I think the ogre is the "turning point" for most gamers. I'm proud to say I beat it on normal.

Some other tough fights:

The tevinter slavers

Back alley brawl with Sgt Kylon

Any Dragon

Drakes as well

I always play on Easy because the story is the main point for me and I find combat tedious. No point in making it even more tedious. I do think there is quite a jump between Easy and Normal, probably because they patched Easy to make it easier because people were complaining.

There's nothing wrong with playing just for the story and cinematics. Dragon Age delivers on both (even if BioWare is a "played one played 'em all" type of company)

I would say to control the mage at all times because he/she is your lifeline. Learn how the spells and warriors skills work, and then maybe you can set them up tactically or just use the presets.

I found the game a challenge the first time I played it. It got easier and easier on each playthrough until now I can beat the game easily. If you play more than once, you should find it getting easier. Plus I found these forums to be a big help because there is a lot of good info on here from people who play the game a lot.

@Addai67 - I have to say, though, I was surprised how switching from Easy to Normal affected my RP. When the battles were harder, I felt more connected to the characters I fought with. Your Mileage May Vary.

I'm one of those people who hate to turn things on easy, but really for my first playthrough I couldn't play on normal, especially because I killed Wynne. Nothing like not knowing the game mechanics combined with nobody with healing magic

I'm playing through again and I'm finding normal to be mostly a cakewalk now, so just give yourself some time on easy

Some helpful hints (I hope):

Learn how to set up the tactics for each companion to best advantage - or micromanage if that's more your style (it's not mine).

Never ever ever let the game autolevel your companions. If you are on pc, get a mod that either prevents your companions being levelled up when you get them - or get the Character Respec mod so that you can 'fix' them after you get them.

On the tactics and gameplay forum here, read some of the guides about builds and so on; and learn which skills, spells, abilities, etc are actually useful and which ones are utter crap (quite a few of them).

Edit: oh, and as others have said - play on easy if you need to, until you learn how things work. It really does get easier with time and practice.

I found the game to be a bit difficult at first, but know I play all my games on nightmare :D (even though I got my butt kicked at the beginning of my first nightmare playthrough)

I think this game would've been easier if they put some more mages. I hate having to rely on Wynne to heal because she either guzzles lyrium like crazy, or I hate leaving Morrigan or Leliana in camp. I usually just give Morrigan all the healing spells I can, which isn't so bad even on nightmare. Still, I feel like my party doesn't live to its potential, and most of the time its either a win or lose due to all the damn resistances enemies have in nightmare.

I think I'm too used to Easy now to go back.  When my husband changes the difficulty without me knowing, I get so annoyed at how wimpy everyone is being and how quickly we're gobbling potions.  LOL  Truly, I can't imagine doing the Deep Roads on anything but Easy...  ZZZZ

I've played this game through like 6 times now...and i STILL play on easy >.>

Its not that normal is incredibly hard but u can deffinetly notice the difference. I think the easy setting has spoiled me and anything harder is just anoying. I like to focus on the story and not spend more than a few minutes on a battle.
