I'm thinking about starting a Vanguard class using an imported Soldier Shepard.  Any tips before I do so?  Like what party members to bring, certain abilities, weapons, and loyalty powers.  360 version.

Build it how you want... don't follow videos telling you how to play. Part of the vanguard that is fun is making it work in a unique way for you.

This is my set up (at lvl 30)

lvl 1 incendiary ammo
lvl 0 cryo ammo
lvl 4 Heavy Charge
lvl 4 Heavy Shockwave
lvl 4 Pull Field
lvl 4 Champion
lvl 4 Area Reave
Bonus Weapon: Assautl Rifle
Weapon Loadout: Vindicator, Scimitar, Tempest, Hand Cannon
Squadmates: Pre-horizon - Miranda with Zaeed, Jacob (Mordin's recruitment) and Grunt.  Post-Horizon - Samara or Thane with Zaeed (when dealing with Geth), Grunt and Jack.
I bring Squadmates who have ammo powers and have them turn it to squad in order to get ammo powers.  It works well for me.  Experiment though... you can always retrain after Horizon if you want.

Alright thanks. When on the collector ship, what is the secondary weapon of choice if not shotgun? Sniper rifle or assault rifle?

Thanks but I don't have live to get all the DLC, I wish I could. I still have my cerberus network card and my collector's weapon and armor. What is a good replacement for Zaeed?

Garrus (Tali on Legion's loyalty mission).

I though Garrus would be good. Tali is as well. Thanks, I'll start it up soon.

It is generally well-accepted that the Vanguard's playstyle centers around Heavy Charge, Inferno Ammo and Champion, or the variant evolutions.

I need to think about it.

On the Collector ship, you have the choice of getting the powerful Claymore shotgun or going for assault rifles or sniper rifles. Unlike Nick, I go for the sniper rifle, particularly the Viper sniper rifle. There's really only two places I want my Vanguard to be: far enough away to make the sniper rifle a better choice than the assault rifle or up close and personal where you'll be wanting to use the shotgun. The Claymore will take down some enemies in a headshot after a Charge.

I'm also not as dependent on other squadmates for ammo because I'm rather keen on squad cryo ammo, which is only a power that the player can give rather than the squadmates. One way I've seen people level up a Vanguard's ammo is to get squad cryo ammo and then getting inferno ammo for themselves. Set your squadmates to cryo and then give your own character inferno. Cryo ammo becomes a method of crowd control.

Don't know what sort of tips I have for a new Vanguard as far as Charge is considered. When I was learning how to use Charge, most of my learning experience came from Garrus's recruitment and to say I died frequently is putting it mildly. I had fun dying that often while I was trying to figure it out, but I don't know if everyone has that level of masochistic patience. Probably the sane way to learn when to Charge is to pause the game, look at your surroundings and make sure the one you're charging doesn't have a couple other buddies right next to him.

Aside from the use of cryo ammo, my Vanguard has always been a bit of a solo experience in that I didn't use a squadmate to compliment one of my own powers. Instead, I picked squadmates depending on the mission based on how well they could strip the enemies' defenses. Lots of shields? Get someone with Overload. Armor and barriers? Get someone with Warp.

Assuming the enemies' defenses are down (or they have no defenses), shockwave is going to bowl them over nicely. With defenses up, shockwave will get them to stumble for a brief moment. Also, with defenses down, pull will get them up until the air and if you have a squadmate with warp, you can have them warp the enemy while under the effect of pull for the warp explosion.

Reave is a popular bonus power choice for a Vanguard. Energy Drain will give you the ability to affect shields. I used Barrier once, but it has a lengthy cooldown where people prefer to keep cooldowns to a minimum so they always have access to Charge. I think Slam is a good choice since I want my skill points for incendiary and cryo ammo, so Slam gives you a method to set up a warp explosion without having to put skill points into Shockwave to open up Pull.

Speaking of Pull again, I find if you're not going to level it up completely to get Pull Field, I wouldn't bother with more than a point in it. In which case I'd suggest Slam again.

Lately I've been using Neural Shock because of its immediate effect on stopping an enemy while having an extremely quick cooldown. It's been my new best friend, but not sure if it really has a place with most Vanguard builds. It's my own personal oddity.

If cryo ammo interests you, I suggest getting squad cryo ammo before Horizon.

This video is a very good introduction to the Vanguard. Unlike my videos and most of the others around here, Average Gatsby actually pauses and explains everything that's going on. As for some reading and theory, the big sticky has a ton of information as well. Mostly though, just have fun! Experimenting and messing around is what it's all about.

If you don't like to rely on a glitch (reload bug/trick/gritch/whatever) for the whole game go for the Scimitar, the shotgun doing most dps in the game. Like Pacifien, I recommend the sniper rifle as the assaut rifle range is usually charged through. There are a few fights you can't charge into (pretorians, gunships, rocket drones), hence you pick the sniper rifle. As I always say: charge, charge and charge when you can. The fights become more fun and intense with charge and if you fail and die it is because you don't charge enough. (hence heavy charge and champion first)

You must figure it out for yourself. No right way to play Vanguard. Some like Sniper Rifle, some hate it, some like Claymore, some don't, some like Scimitar, some do not..up to you really. Personally, from my biased RP view, I like to limit my Vanguard to be experts in close combat but lack Sniper/Assault Rifle, hence I pick Claymore every time and use that or Eviscerator, depends on what I like better at that moment. Though, for the most part I use Claymore exclusively - by far the best Vanguard experience I had.

Barrier is also a good choice for a bonus power for the Vanguard. Fastest defensive power(cast time) and it gains bonuses from your biotic upgrades.

But the problem is when you get the sniper rifle you may get addicted to use it over and over again... so you will miss all the CQC gameplay if you do so.

Possibly if you're not used to CQC. I've almost always played Infiltrator and took up the Vanguard simply to get out of my comfort zone. I took the sniper rifle, but Charge was addictive enough such that I continued with the CQC for the most part.

But I like pain, so repeatedly dying as a Vanguard was right up my alley.

Not really, you can combine and get the benefits of both. In my latest video I even charge with a sniper rifle.

I've found that my build is really fun for insanity, if you want you could try it out.

I've got a lvl 30 - (check this link to find out what build you like http://mass-relay.co...p=4,3,4,2,4,4,1)
4 Inferno (You NEED this ammo power, it gives an awesome panic AoE)
3 Cryo ( for husks, non sentient enemies and mechs/geth)
4 Heavy Charge (don't need an explanation)
2 Shockwave (useless imo, just wanted pull)
4 Pull Field (soften them up with the SR, then pull, then warpsplosion with thane and miranda. Also kills husks without armor instantly)
4 Champion (Better cooldown is better than stronger weapon dmg)
1 Barrier (had to put it somewhere, and it's still useful with charge)

Bonus training: SR (viper)
Main SG: Scimitar (because of the high rate of fire which causes enemies to startle and fall back)

Squad-
Synthetics: Zaeed(Squad disruptor on)/Garrus and Miranda
Husks: Mordin/Jacob (with eviscerator) and Grunt (with eviscerator) (fortification and barrier maxed)
Collectors: Thane and Miranda (for warpsplosions)
Long range targets: Legion (with widow) and Garrus (Tungsten ammo)

Armor-
Head: Recon Hood (%5 weapon dmg) or Sentry Interface (5% shields)
Shoulders: Strength Boost Pads (25% melee)
Arms: Stab. Gauntlets (5% weapon dmg) or Heavy Damping Gauntlets (5% shields)
Chest: Shield Harness (5% shields)
Legs: Life Support Webbing (10% health)

*Terminus Armor is also an alternative

Also, get all 3 biotic amps (from horizon, illium and samara recruitment/complete all firewalker missions) so that you can get the 20% faster cooldown.

And the 3 SG damage upgrades (Jack recruitment, Samara recruitment and Fortack's shop in Tuchanka) to get the double SG ammo capacity.

Hope that helps.

My solution, just make two Vanguards. One with SR, one without. I did that and quite honestly can't pick a favourite.
