ME1 character importing but not face!

I am having a strange problem where I can import my ME1 character fine, no problems, all stats and decisions intact, but when it gets to the face-creation part, my character's appearance shows up as Default Shepard.

Whats weirder is that my character was female, and her face shows up as default MALE Shepard.  (Although if I choose to go with that face, it will show up as default female Shepard in the game).

Has anybody else encountered this problem?  I've searched around and cant seem to find anybody else with the same issue.   I have a copy of ME1 from direct2drive, and have the retail disc version of ME2... not sure if that would make a difference.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I just noticed this problem myself, apparently not one but two of the femshep files I have encounter this problem.

For anyone keeping score at home, in addition to these two threads that DoctorSuave bumped, there's also this one you started some time ago. Unfortunately, Darkstar87uk is the only one who seems to have had it resolved, and he didn't post what he did - if anything, it actually sounds like maybe he didn't do anything.

When I find the time later I suppose I'll try playing around with some things (e.g. these were manually moved over by me, maybe I should try using the ME2 config to import everything again or somesuch). I did use cheats on both of the save files with this problem, but I was careful to only do stuff that should not be a problem (+XP, extra equipment) and I also have at least one cheated FemShep that imports fine, so I'm doubtful that's a cause.

I've only ever had the problem or something like it, show up when I run mass effect 2 without movies via a shortcut extension. What happens is that if I've just been playing the game as ANY shepard, I'll see their face in the lazarus screen instead of the proper face for the import. If I have only just booted ME2, I'll see the default male shepard face (no matter the sex of import).

The difference though is that If I press accept imported face anyway (not pressing anything else), I'll get the save's head morph just fine in game.

Just throwing out a shot in the dark, have you tried a lower screen resolution and running in a window, just till you get the imported save set up? It really seems like a loading/cacheing issue if you're certain the save data isn't corrupt.

You can always share the ME1 CHAR file with someone else and have them import it to a workable ME2 save, to rule that out.

Thanks for the input, guys. For what it's worth, I didn't use any cheats or mods in ME1 and never moved any of my save files. And for me it seems a little deeper than a loading/cahceing issue since even if I click to accept imported face, it still isn't showing up as my character's face in game. I've tried several times with two or three different character saves from ME1 and always get the same result.

I may try reinstalling ME2 and see if that does anything, since I did alter some stuff at one point to disable the opening movies (although I subsequently set it back to normal). Or maybe I'll try actually moving my saves somewhere else just to see if that makes a difference, since ME2 doesn't seem to particularly like them where they are now.

And sorry for bumping all these similar topics. The forum search wasn't working for me before I posted and then it suddenly started working and I found those other posts. Technical issues all over the place!

Good call Crunchyinmilk, I was playing with movies off so that may well be what happened to me. Will test that out later.

DoctorSuave, didn't mean to criticize your thread-bumping, just wanted to honestly have all the links in one place, for whatever those threads are worth.

I haven't had a chance to try doing a clean install of ME2 yet, but I tried deleting my ME1 saves from where ME2 puts them and then recopying them, and still no dice. Should get a chance to try the re-install tomorrow. Has anybody else with this problem tried that?

In the meantime I tried re-creating one of my Shepards from scratch... is it just me or is there a greater disconnect between how the character looks on the character creation screen and how they appear in-game than there was in ME1? Maybe there is more facial animation and lighting stuff going on in ME2 so it's harder to judge how your character will look? I just don't remember having this problem quite as much in ME1. Then again I didn't have to go through 5 minutes of gameplay/cutscene every time I wanted to try again. (An awesome 5 minutes, but still, it's kind of a pain to go through all that, create a character that looks good on the creator, only to discover that he/she looks like a mannequin that was left out in the sun too long in the actual game.)

What I wouldn't give for one of those stand-alone character creator things like they released for Dragon Age...

So I did a re-install of ME2, and it worked! Characters importing correctly now, faces and everything!

I'm pretty sure the reason for it not working is exactly what Crunchyinmilk said all along, which is that apparently I had some movies disabled, specifically the cool movie that comes up just before the character creation screen, with all the machines rebuilding Shepard and bringing him/her back from the dead.

I thought I had re-enabled all those intro movies after disabling them in order to make a decent-looking Shepard face on my first playthrough (I needed multiple tries to get it right and didn't want to sit through it all every time). But apparently I missed that one video. Doh!

Anyway, kind of an anticlimactic answer, but at least I got my old Shepard back. Thanks for the input!

Just on a related note see the thread about skipping movies. It works. Coupled with a slomo bind to get past miranda's dialogue and run through the normandy, making a new character isn't so tedious anymore.

To follow-up, my problem was indeed just the -nomovies tag I was using.

Which doesn't offer any help for those of you who are having this consistently and actually getting stuck with the default face.
