Characters look different in-game?

So, I was just messing with Mass Effect a bit. It has been awhile and I thought I could get another play-through before ME2. In Mass effect, your character has a very different look in the character creator than it does in the game itself. I suspect that any uneveness in facial structure will be similarly exaggerated in Dragon Age, and that we will all be re-making our faces when the game comes out. I can live with that because I kind of enjoy the facegen process, but I wish that I could see how it is going to turn out anyway.

Well when i played Mass Effect i had the same experience. But the ME Character Creator is different:

1. The light is coming from one direction, everything else around the face is darkness. So if you have some hard edges in the face one side seems harder, because of the thrown shadows.

In Dragon Age everything is more "lighted" but also still very dark.

2. In ME you could not rotate the face freely; you could only let your char look in some degree to the left, right, up and down.

In Dragon Age you can directly and freely rotate around, so there is less hidden perspective, which you will see the first time in game with moving camera and moving character.

Example: I gave my first ME char a nose that seemed to be "normal". But in-game i saw, that it was a bumped nose :)

My opinion: there will be some differences, but not as huge as in Mass Effect

Yeah, they should have made a character Creation screen with more neutral lightning, but that´s a really minor gripe.

I don't know how they'll look like in-game but the character's portraits can sometimes look different from how they do during creation.

If you go to the modify character screen you look at each of your characters in a more "natural" setting. They'll even move around a little bit and turn their head if you wait long enough. I think it gives a better feel to how the character will look in game.

Yeah, the lighting in the character creator bothers me quite a bit. i wish it was more even and bright, like the sims :/

i have problems seeing what color eyes my person really has, haha

Put the gamma correction at around 0.65 and you can make out the eye color a little better.

Eye color is still kind of an issue with increased gamma. Are there any blue eyes in the creator?

I've not seen Blue blue eyes they all seem to be grayish or with green hint.

Well, I played with the CC here for hours, so I really hope that it is closer than in Mass Effect. In that game, it was a lot more than the lighting. It seemed like your head was stretched onto a slightly different frame in game, so that if you made someone with a kind of scrunched up mouth and nose and a short chin, they looked okay in the game. Also better than in ME: you can look at your character in the CC, go in game and check it out, then go look again. In Mass Effect you could not edit a character after making them. That alone is a huge improvement.

There is nothing more annoying then finding out the face you spent hours making turns out to look rubbish in game. Probably the reason it took me so long to complete ME! Restarting a million times to get the face just right tends to hinder progress >.<

I'd say there's a decent possibility that characters will look different in-game. In Mass Effect at least the default Shepard tended to look better than anything that could be made in the CC. In DA, the presets are all pretty crappy.

well i would think from looking at the gameplay videos one of the characters has to be the pc and they all look fine on their so I am not anticipating any problems at all

This just suggests that the presets are going to look okay, as they did in Mass Effect. I am mostly just suggesting that people might expect to have to do some editing once they see their characters in-game.

I do expect them to look at least a bit different from the lighting, but hopefully it won't be much more than that. It doesn't seem too different when you go into the Modify screen, but then, that's not a close up.

Well I suspect that the biggest problems with the mass effect CC was that you didn't have any idea what your characters would look like when they were speaking or facial feature morphing during expressions. The Dragon Age CC at least gives you some idea of what they'll look like doing these facial animations.

I had no problem with my characters in NWN looking the same as I made them and this CC is even better so I am still putting my faith in Bioware to get this right without problem.

Actually the first human female preset (which they used in the IGN mage origin video) looks pretty good IMO.

I usually work from the last female human preset (the baldy one). I love it when characters have full faces.

But I sincerely hope that characters don't differ so much in the actual game, that would upset me a bit. Hate that with the Sims 3 and Mass Effect.

Yea, I hope it doesn't differs too much either, would be very annoying since I always have problems with making my characters look as I want them to. :<
