I've never been much of a forums guy, sicne i never really have any problems with my games. However, as off lately I've had a major problem with Mass Effect 1 (steam version) that's rendering the game unplayable. So here goes nothing,

I'll start by laying down my stats, then my problem.

It is the PC version, and i bought a digital download off steam.

I have a custom cooled tower, with AMD Athlon II X2 245 Processor @2.90GHz

Four Gigabytes of DDR2 ram running at just under 900MHZ.

My operating system is Windows Vista Ultimate, SP2, 32-bit. (UAC Always off, and i ALWAYS have it off)

I have an ATI Radeon HD4870, running at stock speeds (795MHz), clock speed is at (1100MHz). The Video ram is 512MB, GDDR5.

I have the latest hardware driver which is 8.741, and the latest catalyst driver (v10.6).

My problem is not with sound and i know it. However, if you still need info about my sound adapters let me know how to get them and i will.

I have DirectX 11, and when i digitally downloaded mass effect 1 it carried its own DirectX and installed it, so i dont think DirectX is the problem either.

Lately I've bought both titles Mass Effect 1 and 2 after a recommendation from a friend. I sit down to play Mass Effect 1, and since the game is not that new, i run all the settings at max and at 1080p. Everything runs smooth just around 35-40 fps, and i have my temp counters all holding still at 50 and below. I'll play the game and after a short amount of game time (my temp's still around 50 and everything still fine) the game will COMPLETELY freeze, and the system will completely freeze, forcing me to do a hard shut down. I started lowering the graphics gradually until everything was at LOWEST. And still even then, after a short while of gameplay, the whole system freezes, alt+tab doesnt work, cntrl+alt+del doesnt work. Nothing does, even if i press num lock on my keyboard the light doesnt respond. However, the picture is still there completely frozen and with the background sound/music.

Now honestly, with my set up i think i should be able to play this game without any hiccups, and it always works smoothly until something completely fails and there i am doing a hard shut down and replaying the same level over and over again.

Please note that I've plugged in Mass Effect 2 (and endured the MAJOR spoilers....) just to make sure my system can handle mass effect 1. And everything maxed out i was able to mess around with mass effect 2 for 2+ hours :S.

Is this kind of problem common with ATI Drivers?? Is there a fix?
Any kind of help is really appreciated, i really wanted to finish both games, going into mass effect 2 without being able to play 1 on my rig will be VERY disappointing..... Thanks in advance:lol::D.

Add: Don't suggest i post this to EA, I've had problems with Fifa 2010 posted it all over EA/ FiFA2010 forums and I've been completely ignored for a week. Except for an admin who shows up 1 day after post is down and asks me to do a packet loss test... really.. a packet loss test... i think i'd notice if i had packet loss. Then after i post all my perfect test results no reply for 6 more days. I hope this forum is a tiny bit more helpful. I don't want another useless game on my desktop cuz no one has a solution.

Hi there =)

Is your game patched to the latest version? Steam should do it automatically, but worth checking.

Also, since these forums only came into being with Dragon Age, it's worth having a look at the original ME support forum, where there was a lot more discussion and dev interaction. There's a link to it in a sticky at the top of this forum. I remember there being some discussion on running ME with Vista, but not the details as it wasn't relevant to my rig (I still have XP).

It's unlikely to be a software issue; if it's not a temperature problem with cpu or gpu, that leaves hdd temp problem, motherboard problem, or RAM problem. RAM or mb seem most likely - if you hit a bad section of RAM, it can crash system, and if the bad section has a high address, you won't hit it 'for a while'

to check hdd, just run a disk check. for RAM you'll need to dl a memory checker program that boots up to check. here is link to a good one: http://www.memtest.org/

motherboard - very tough - some mbs have checker programs, may need to just feel the chips on the mb.

Really sounds like a registry problem. I recommend running CC Cleaner.
Then I recommed updating graphic drivers.
