So I recently got a new laptop and decided to install Mass Effect. I got patch 1.01 and had terrible framerate issues (slideshow at medium-low settings), then tried again with patch 1.02. After that patch, it started working silky smooth with maximum settings (1600x900, ultra high textures, linear filtering, etc.). I got from the first control over Sheperd through the ending of Captain Anderson's briefing for the first mission before it turned into a slideshow again. That and the supposedly ultra-high textures are very pixelated.

Yes, the game is patched up and I did download the latest video driver. Also, it's the retail disc version.

My system:
Windows 7 64 bit
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8700 2.5GHz, 6144MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 260M, 3823MB memory

I should be getting much better performance with these specs. Anyone have any idea as to what might be going on?

I would guess your video card is being underclocked by your system to avoid overheating. Often happens with laptops. Do you have some sort of Nvidia control panel you can bring up while playing the game windowed? I know the ATI catalyst center has a nice "Overdrive" panel where you can see your card's temperature and clock speeds on one page, if Nvidia has something similar that should help you test this.
