Just started playing Dragon age for first time and also im a noob at strategy games like this but this game looked to good to skip.
(pc version btw)
anyways im having trouble getting used to moving my characters around when i start a battle i want them to do range attacks, they start firing then a second later one of the archers or my mage run up to the enemy i didnt even tell them to do that. so basically i want them to not move but keep firing. gets really anoying specially when the rest of the group follows. i tried pressing h for hold but that cancels the attack also.
any advice or tips would be great thanks.

Try to unequip all close range weapons´. Perhaps it helps.

Look in your .. uh ... tactics menu. T I think it is (haven't played for a month so have to remember)

Should have a choice in a drop down menu for such things as Ranged, Defensive, etc. Make sure they are on Ranged as it should have them stay back and run if any one comes near them.

also, I found that for rogues sometimes if you have a melee ability like cheapshot(or whatever it's called, the early melee stun) setup to be used sometimes the archer will close on their target to use it even if setup as ranged. I believe I got around this by setting the condition to be when enemy is in short range.

Hopefully that helps a bit. I remember having a few frustrating battles because of tactics not doing what I thought they should.

Actually what you probably need to do is just tell you party members to hold position. Directly under the portraits of your team there is a small circle with a stick figure in it. If you click on that it will switch to a held up hand, your characters will now only fight back if attacked and will otherwise stand around waiting for you to tell them what to do. (ie. If you tell them to fire arrows thats what they'll do till you tell them otherwise or they are engaged at melee range.) hope that helps.

ugh. disregard, jsut read the bottom of your first post. that I know of you can't move around AND fire arrows. I still recommend using hold (either pressing H or selecting the Hand symbol) but you need to pause set your party commands then let them execute, pause and reeval, etc... slow but lets you truly run the show...
