This might have been posted in one of the many topics, but I wasn't able to locate it with a search. I think it would be cool if the stock backgrounds for your portrait were a little more diverse. I don't necessarily mean the avatar here on the forums (though that would be cool too), but in the character creator for the game. After you choose the angle and expression of your in game  portrait, you get a choice of backgrounds that are well... bright, glowy splashes of color?

Considering the relative detail of the portrait itself, I think a nice finishing touch would be to choose some in game backgrounds to go behind it. Maybe a rogue chooses a city street, a Dalish chooses a forest, etc. You could have vague texture backgrounds like a castle wall or more detailed backgrounds like a mountain peak or the dwarven homelands behind your character's portrait. They would be small and hard to see but the feel of your character's face in a real setting would have been a nice touch. Maybe in an expansion?

It's not a real big deal but it might have been a nice little detail. I like nice little details.  :)

hmm, I didn't think about it in this way, but I can't explain why, I prefer the colours...

I kinda like having my seemingly benign character juxtaposed over a faded red moon-like circle.

I like this idea, would be pretty nice as I don't particularly like the coloured background too.
But in that case, would like to also put a picture background for companions, or it will bother me that my portrait stands out compared to the others in my group.

I would love more portrait options! Forest, moon with stars etc. Is it possible to create more I wonder?

Or even just some regular muted backgrounds without the starburst patterns or horizon designs would be nice. Plain can be good!

Yes a very good idea I for one would certainly welcome it.........maybe this will make its way back to a dev by way of the mods

I don't really have a problem with the ones that are there now, but more would be cool. I agree that it would be a bit odd if your character had a picture background but the companions didn't.

If only our PC's can get new backgrounds I'm all for it. We are *special* that way. :)

Yeah, I've been sticking with black backgrounds also. I feel like the bright colors throw off the depth perception and make the images looks more 2-D, which I don't like. I've seen it work well with some other people's characters, but when I try it I can't seem to get it right.

I definitely think more subtle tones would help solve the issue.

When the game is released, I do believe one of the mods we can easily put into the game would be the ability to change the background image to use in game.

So you can detail it as much as you'd want for purposes of in-game portraits.

I think adding too much detail to the portrait background would clutter it up, but the more options available the better.

Yeah..I wasn't a fan of the backgrounds myself..I chose black..

I'm sure there is possibility to add more..it's probably just a folder with images in it.. (or data calling some images somewhere or something)

As for backgrounds ... not sure if the size of the portrait circle would even make it possible.  Even far away a character head kinda takes up alot of room.

I've found some decent colors to accent the portrait of my avatar pretty well so I"m happy with it.

The head does take up alot of room but... having taken art in college many, many years ago, you would be amazed at what the mind can pick up from an image. Even the suggestion of something happening in the background, even if it is dim and fuzzy so as to not take away from the portrait... your mind on some level comprehends that and views the image differently. If you look at fiery dove's current avatar which isn't a CC image but a stock forum image:

You can't really tell what is behind the character, but your mind perceives it differently.. it is no longer a computer generated face like our avatars, but it feels more real. Well at least to me it does. Again, I'm not saying this is a huge deal to me, but it would be cool if we had more choices or if I could edit the image myself.

I don't mind the coloured backgrounds, although some are pretty bad, but I can see why you'd want more variety. I've used alternatives to the black for all but two of my 14 characters so far (and I think one of those two was because the CC lost the background on edit/upload).

But, as Twitchmonkey said above, it might be too cluttered/busy to add additional detail to the background of a portrait. Then again, it's a single player game and so you're the only one looking at it. Hmm.

I don't mind the coloured backgrounds. I just want more. And I really like the OP's idea.
I feel that none of the current coloured ones really.. you know.. fit me. :?

I like the colored back grounds.. I just chose ones that I thought fit what my characters alignment/personality might be. Does this game even have an alignment feature like D&D?.. It actually just occurred to me that I guess it might not.

I'll add mine to the voices requesting different background types. I like the wall and city street ideas.

No alignments, but your actions affect the people and world around you. So if you play your character as a CG for example, it will affect the world differently than if you played it as LN.

I like this idea, & wanna add my idea to it, for 'elemental' backgrounds, that would look like that element was sitting in the background behind the portrait. Especially a Lightning one! Image IPB (Gotta love Lightning! Image IPB)

Yes yes yes! This has been my most desired mod since the game came out!!! A wider variety of backgrounds! I just want to have more, I think of them as sort of "character auras", to represent their various personalities. But there are so few not in use by the party members and each should have a unique one... If anyone figures out how to edit them I want to know!
