If anyone here is like me and has been waiting to buy Awakening, having a hard time getting convinced that this isn't some over-glorified DLC, let me tell you: Awakening rocks. Time and passion has been put in this expansion!  There are a lot of cutscenes, a nice amount of quests, improvements in the gameplay environment that are noticeable the moment you take control of your character for the first time, nice new gear, and great new skills!!

It's truly a great expansion.

Some weird things, in my opinion:
  • Oghren is the only old companion joinging you again. OGHREN! WHYYY Oghren OUT OF ALL?!?! That is what went through my mind. He got me laughing ocassionally but was he anywhere near my favorite? Absolutely not;
  • You no longer have your awesome dog;
  • DLC items such as Starfang and the Warden armor set are gone.
And then there are the companions who are terribly similar to those you know from Origins, even in voice-acting:
  • Anders = Alistair    (lighthearted comments, sarcastic, healthy dose of self-pity mixed with humor)
  • Justice = Sten     (foreign, stoic, straightforward, pragmatic)
Oh well. Awesome expansion nonetheless. Having great fun with it!

the expansion has some serious issues.. if you import a charcter from origins thats wearing one of the DLC armours thats not imported then not only is your warden butt naked they also have a permament stamina penalty. and the fact you can potentially loose every piece of gear in one quest merely because you do have DLC that is approved for import is bad play testing to say the least. which is also demonstrated by the fact the blood powers dont import, fixed with the upcoming patch i hope

its got potential but alot of issues as well, and worth waiting till at least the next patch to play

While you are absolutely correct, it doesn't have to be perceived as so very dire.

My character had the luck to be wearing the Dragonbone armor, but he did lose Starfang. I didn't really care and replaced it with a regular sword that dropped. Minutes after a weapong I think even better than Starfang dropped.

This or that, it is indeed bad play testing to say the least and it shouldn't be the case at all. It's a shame.

Still, apart from the import issues... I don't see what other serious issues you could be talking about...?

My first playthrough, I wasnt compelled to recruit companions like the crazy elf biatch and dwarf chick.  I had Anders, Justice, Howe, and Oghren.  little did I know, not recruiting more companions would...
*Spoiler*

essentially save their life if I dont take them to the last mission.

Hmm, seems I just ran into another of these serious issues you mentioned. I need to talk to the Seneschal (or something) to start the Joining for 2 of my companions, but all he can talk about now is preparing for war.

i got 3/4 of the way through awakening and discovered id permamently lost every piece of gear my character owned, turns out its a bug due to entering an area equipped with DLC items that you are allowed to import into awakenings, a certain elf quest. for me it was the final straw and will all the annoying problems the latest patch introduced, i uninstalled awakening and i still havent bothered with it and i wont until its patched properly.

STOPPED. RIGHT. THERE.

time and passion? HAHAHAHAHAH are you ****ing retarded?

there is almost NO consinstancy between Origins and Awakening.  Warden died? you can import him/her FULLY ALIVE!

Got the Dog? you're EXTREMELY LOYAL COMPANION?  he's NOT THERE!!!  even as a human noble..where you owned the dog forever..and he's been with you forever..he's MYSTERIOUSLY GONE!

Love interest?  If it's Alistair you see him..but it's lackluster and a laugh fest....otherwise....Leliana? Zevran?  too bad..they're NOT EVEN MENTIONED!!!

You're the hero of Fereldan yet most people certainly don't treat you as such or acknowledge it....

Party interactions are severely limited.

The entire thing is a cesspool of bugs and problems.  crash..crash...losing items...broken ****ing companion quests that won't even trigger IF YOU FOLLOW THE LOGICAL PROGRESSION OF THE ****ING STORY...

bugged "gifts"...I give Sigrun a goddamn snow globe and her approval shot up +100..and even if it falls...it's now bugged so that NO GIFTS OR DIALOGUES will give you ANY MORE approval points...

companion quests not triggering...

a nonsensical interaction with the Architect in the mines..which are bugged to **** themselves....no explanation as to why he captured you or why he made you fight two dragons....and then he asks for you to help him at the end?? LOL

Time and Passion my sweaty ****ing ******....

Oghren?  Maxed approval....goes into awakenings and he BARELY KNOWS YOU..and his influence is re-****ing-set.

Now...believe it or not..dispite all this...I do enjoy Awakenings for the most part....though I'm only on my second playthrough..and it certainly doesn't have the draw of Origins...and you'd think it'd be more fun since it's shorter...

however...time and passion? gtfo....the game was rushed out..and all the bugs and problems ****ing show it...

you liked it..great..so did I overall....it's just not what it SHOULD have been....and there is NOTHING about it that shows passion, other then for more ****ing money, NOR any hint of "a lot of time" being spent on it.

Ohhh alright, alright! Curiosity got the better of me and since I'm resolved to be more sweet and attentive on the internet, I've decided to read and reply to your comment anyway.

I understand where you're coming from but I suggest you try to subdue the emotion your feeling when you're writing your comment. I'm sure you realize this is a flaw of yours aswell, as I realized the same in the past.

Anyway!! You say that you enjoyed the expansion and you're now in your second playthrough. Sounds like a good thing. I haven't experienced most of the bugs you mentioned, although I was never able to start the Joining with the elf and the lady dwarf because I was too far into the main story and the Salaschliezle (I've no idea what that word means or is anymore.. you know, the main man of Vigil's Keep) could only talk about preparing for war and no more Joining dialogue :( Stupid! Also, Oghren's quest never triggered. I guess he didn't wanna talk to a friend about his wife and child.

Still, I had a freaking awesome time with this expansion and I'll definitely replay it sometime. Also, considering it took an Age to make Dragon Age: Origins, I'm pretty darn impressed what they did for an expansion in such a short time. Keep 'em coming with this quality and I keep buyin'.

My view: DA:O:A is so easy I didn't even bother playing it more than a dozen hours. For the first time in my life, I've legally purchased a game and only played it three or four times. There is no challenge, and I must assume that the nightmare difficulty is a bug, because I was able to breeze through it without even using abilities or proper items. On my last attempt, I deliberately equipped my entire party only in standard non-magical items, and they wipe out anything with merely auto-attacks and the occasional tactic-triggered heal from Anders. I haven't even encountered all those bugs because I lost interest almost immediately. This is a pale shadow of DA:O, a hasty concoction made to profit on the succesful original. I am spending no more money on this franchise.

It is not a hasty concoction. Saying that puts your own intelligence to shame. According to your comment it's a hasty concoction because it has balancing issues. Some people are unbelievable. Some people, also, are hardly ever pleased with anything. Then again, I'm not too surprised as it comes from a person that has only once bought a game legally in his entire life.

Think of killing the Brood mothers in Kal'Hirol as a trigger for the endgame, like how you go to Arl Eamon to trigger the fall of Denerim in DAO.

The Mother is b***chy in more than one way.

no..denying it puts YOUR intelligence to shame.  Everything points towards it being a rushed cluster-****.  ****ty dialogue..bugged quests all over the place....more problems introduced then fixed....totally forgetting 99% of anything you did in DA:O INCLUDING WHETHER OR NOT YOU DIED at the archdemon.  Oghren barely knows you even if you were one drunk night from gay one-night-stand with him (or just a one nighter if you're a female warden).  Your dog, the most loyal and inseperable person, especially for a human noble, is not even an afterthought....love interest...not even mentioned until the epilogues unless it's alistair..and if it was him you'd think you were Anora with how warm he comes across.

there's hardly any real story involved and it's such a fragmented half-ass of a job they throw the architect at you...throw a dungeon he puts you in..then he set's you up against two dragons for.....whatever the hell reason that is NEVER even hinted at....his entire agenda isn't even touched on but a few scrapes at the end.

now if you read "the calling" you know what the architect is all about...but, tell me it's not ****ty and/or lazy amateurish writing to assume everyone has read that book...and to give us such mediocre story elements to explain anything in it.

so why don't you try not insulting someone elses intelligence until you take the obvious blinders off.

and I'm done with this thread..I can see you're one of those types of people that would argue with God (if he existed) about the color of water.

Actually I was wandering why the Architect wanted the warden to fight those 2 dragons, and why he seems to want Valenna's sister's approval or something to unleash them. I was too happy to engage in a boss fight while playing, but now I'm so curious, can anyone tell me the reason, PM maybe or post here argh *no spoiler* section* ... I have no intention of reading The Calling, grumble ... stupid architect!!

Edit: Check a bit of wikia, no explanation on the dragons, but I found out David Gaider wrote the Calling, and that other book, and lead writer on DAO! Dude's a celeb lol!

Good point, but maybe the Architect meant to say that "You will never see them again." to the Seranni person as he wanted the warden for(he tells you why later)

The DLC thing was unfortunate, but I was able to Bring King Cailan's armour set.

I don't know why you would choose to insult my intelligence of all things, but I deem DA:O:A a hasty concoction because of how many blatant, game-destroying flaws were allowed to persist through the seemingly minimal playtesting. I am not the only one to complain about the game's difficulty; I could complain about many more things, but I can live with bugs and quirky code if the framework of the game is good. In this case, the game is so easy even on nightmare difficulty that it frankly must be a bug. I should not be able to deliberately equip my praty in very poor gear, use virtually no abilities, and right-click my way through the content on the hardest setting. And I have bought plenty of games legally; what I said was that this is the first of the games I've bought that I couldn't bother playing more than a handful of times. That has never happened before.

I really don't care that my DLC doesn't transfer cause it bugged so only some of the armor would drop in RtO and the random encounter never happened on any of my 3 playthroughs so I couldn't get starfang.

I got annoyed by the minor things like not being shown respect as King Consort

Why am I kneeling to Anora but noone kneels to me? And why isn't the templar like OMG your King Consort sure you can have Anders no need for Anora's approval.

Hello all,

First of all ****SPOILERS IN THIS POST! So If you are reading this by any chance and have not played Awakening yet, then skip my post.****

Like many others I had trouble deciding if it was worth it or not. When it came out I read some bad reviews and by the time I didn't have the money to buy it. After my b-day, I had some money (yey!) and I felt the URGE to play some more Dragon Age Posted Image

So I bought it.

Overall it was a nice experience. I play a female Cousland, she's a warrior called Cersei. The events at the end of DA:O put her in the throne as queen-consort. She's married to Alistair, after all *wink wink*
The first thing I noticed when I imported my character is the new background (sounds silly, but hey, it gave me that sort of "ohhh epicness incoming!" feeling) and the fact that you can import any save you want. The only letdown was to notice that half of my DLC armor dissapeared (I was wearing the Warden armor from soldier's peak). Not really a problem.

I think it's better if I do a list of things that I enjoyed:

  • Alistair's cameo: I totally loved this. I was glad to see some sort of continuation from DA:O. It was very sweet and a good way to immerse yourself in the story.
  • New Companions: Just one name. ANDERS. This guy rocks, so much. The "I didn't do it" scene made me laugh and from that point i fell for the character. This was my first playthough and  I travelled most of the time with Nathaniel, Anders and Justice. I have to say I didn't expect the new companions to be so well written. Nathaniel is a very good example of this; at first I was going to execute him ( I had a perfect excuse) but I'm really glad I didn't do it. Because I enjoy seeing that his personality changes as I play, and that makes him be more alive, more realistic. The new conversation system is somewhat different, but I think it also adds more realism, and I was glad to see more interaction between characters and the new "examine this item for more dialogue". That was VERY interesting to see.
  • Cities that feel like cities. Amaranthine, for some reason i felt like Aladin haha. (did anyone notice that the Constable looks a bit like Conrad Verner from ME?)
  • Quests that make you feel like a noble.
  • Storage chest in Vigil's keep. <3
  • RUNECRAFTING!!!!! Posted ImagePosted Image Seriously, it's addictive.
  • New abilities and spells. I haven't tried the other classes but OMG... Has anyone played a warrior? They are so damn nice. Massacre, Peon's plight, the stamina recovery.. the 2h love... Posted Image
  • Wade&Herren are back. Seriously, this is gold. I love them so much. I could sit and listen to their banter for hours.
  • New zones! And by new zones I mean zones with new design like Blackmarsh.
  • The Architect. Sexy.
  • The fact that I can control who joins the Wardens. I love telling annoying characters (Velenna, i'm looking at you) that they do not deserve the honor.
  • Ser Pounce-a-lot.
  • The fact that I can see a connection between DA:O, DA:O:A and probably DA2. One of the things that worreied me the most when i read bad reviews is the fact that they mentioned no progression or connection between both games. Well, I do see it and it makes me glad it's there.
...and things that I dislike:

  • The ending. Is it me or things end too fast? As someone told me "As if they were in a rush". It gave me that feeling towards the end. And some events in the epilogue doesn't make a lot of sense, dates mostly.
  • Needs more encounters like the Dark Alley in DA:O. I have all these cool spells but these darkspawn die way too fast. I can't take the time to do cool strategies. It usually involves brute force :/
  • Characters like the Baroness. She's really interesting as a character but I get the feeling she could've had more potential. Everything happens so fast with her.
  • The Mother's face. Posted Image It made m jump in my chair. I close my eyes and I still see it. Posted Image Mage's hats and robes are still ugly. I hoped to see some new armor designs :( Hope it gets fixed in DA2.
I would say it's worth the money. I had fun playing Awakening but sometimes I found myself a bit lost.

Awakening looked alright.
