Part of the problem with having a hunk 'o burnin' love on a romance novel cover is that he has to look capable of performing the actions described therein. If he's going to be ripping bodices, he better be really strong. And the way you depict someone as being really strong visually is to give him good muscle definition.

There is nothing ****** erotic about it.  Fabio's pose is an expression of manliness and men feel guilty about admiring another man's body since they're conditioned to think that it's homosexual.  Not all admiration is sexual in nature.

It's well known that men and boys playing with swords are really playing with male sexual organ replacements. Pretty basic psychology. The more inadequate the boy feels, the bigger the sword he wants to play with as compensation.
