I've googled the heck out of this and can't find a solution that works for me. I get intermittent crashes that drop to a black screen that requires a hard reboot with both ME1 and 2, although it's far worse in 2. I was able to complete 1, although with an irritating amount of crashes, but 2 crashes anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes into the game consistently. Running Win7 64-bit with an Intel CPU and ATI Radeon 4870.
Things I've tried:
All combinations of video settings on/off that I can think of
Changing sound card from integrated Realtek to Creative Audigy 2
Updating all drivers to latest versions
Uninstalling k-lite codec pack (someone out there said this fixed it for them)
Setting compatibility mode to Win XP
Stress testing memory, cpu and video card (all passed)
Verifying local cache (steam version)
Anyone have any other ideas? Game is unplayable for me at this point. Thanks.

I had a very similar problem with a 4870, it turned out that I was running ATI fusion which I didn't realise but it overclocked the gpu slightly and caused me1 to crash similar to how you described it. Is your card overclocked? if so you should drop it back to stock speeds and see if that fixes the problem.

Same thing happens to me. Updated all my drivers.
Asus P5E Motherboard
Nvidia 8800 GT Video Card
Windows 7 64 bit
8 GB RAM
I've tried about every setting, XP mode, etc, get black screen crash where the only thing I can do is reboot the PC. I've just finished playing Dragon Age Origins and Awakening with little to no problems.
