Actually he didn't.  Lazarus brought him back from the dead. Zaeed actually survived.

In a fair fight, Shep would probably win. But, more realistically, Zaeed would start one his long, boring, war stories and put Shep to sleep. (he did it to me often enough)

Even though I like Zaeed, and he is a bad ass, he's just a merc. He has experience, sure but he's just a regular guy.
