While I've found some great tutorials on creating custom items and how to add retextures without overwriting, I wasn't able to find any clear tutorials on how to go through the steps to create new looks on old models, so took the liberty of throwing one together.
I sincerely hope I haven't overlooked somebody else's tutorial. I do make use of Adinos, weriKK and Krayzie334's tutorials though.
So... on to the show, I suppose! social.bioware.com/644124/blog/6394/

Great work! I'm glad someone finally got around to pulling this info together (it was something I meant to do for a long time but now that's one less thing I have to worry about
However I do cringe about the encouragement to delete the tint file. I'd rather see custom item authors encouraged to embrace the tint system so that players can use TWF or UDK to alter the final color scheme of their stuff.
Also I'd love to see the entire tutorial ported to the wiki in general. The ability to collaboratively edit and maintain this kind of thing moving forward makes it much more useful and future proof for the community.

@Nezroy - Well, especially considering the release of your Dye Kit, I might recant on the removal of the tints and encourage people to alter the tint file to correspond with their patterns too. I'm still up in the air on reworking mods to make them compatible with it though. While I think its great people are able to change the color tones to suit their needs, some of the things I've made have been with specific color tones in mind.
I'll try and take some time tomorrow and add this in to the tutorial section on the wiki.

I'm trying to learn all about this and I would like to know if I can use this tutorial to actually edit the way an item looks? Example would be to add shoulders pads to a robe or something like that? How would I go about doing things like that?

You need to change the model which is completely different.
