Don't listen to this man, the first post of that topic is enough to drive one insane and leave you a withered husk of your former self. Let me offer you a warning original poster, you can enter that topic, but you cannot return. Once started there can be no turning back. I'll give you a loaded revolver son, just save the last bullet for yourself, you'll thank me before you pull the trigger.

Wasn't there a thread with EXACTLY this title and question about a month ago? I swear, some people just don't think to use the search bar.

To answer your question, people like Tali so much for multiple reasons:
1) She's extremely well written and has an intriguing backstory/conflict.
2) Her geeky-yet-strong personality is appealing to a wide range of people.
3) Along with Garrus, she's the only squadmate to return and remain loyal to Shepard in Mass Effect 2. True loyalty and friendship goes a long way.
4) She's attractive in a psuedo-exotic way (and was designed as such).
5) Liz Sroka is a brilliant voice actress.

I'm certain I can think of other reasons, but those are the ones that stand out in my mind. But really, this question could be asked of basically anything in existence and the all-encompassing answer will always be this: "I like _______ because it has certain traits that I find appealing."

Tali just happens to appeal to a massive number of people, therefore her fanbase is large and very vocal.

I like Tali because I like Tali.

Do I really need a freaking reason?

Tali is a very neat, interesting, well-written character. Not sure about her so much in Me2, but she is very sweet, and fascinating. Probably my favorite squaddie to talk to after Liara in ME1.

She was the only female squad member in Mass Effect 1 you couldn't have as a love interest. She was appealing to many because of her figure, voice, history, and sweet personality.

When Bioware put her in Mass Effect 2 as a central character again as well as a love interest, that was that. Now the internet loves her.

1) I would disagree. I don't think she's well-written. She's written very one-sidedly; basically she's forced into liking Shepard regardless of how she was treated in ME1.  Either way, "well-written and intriguing" is a judgment call. I found her Trial plot rather contrived and unrealistic.
3) That's bullcrap. Liara is a lot more loyal by default for actually saving Shepard's life after death. Tali ran away. Say what you will about Liara in ME2; the only reason Tali and Garrus are there are as fan service tokens.

Tali is only "sweet" if you cater to her whims. Show her any kind of defiance, no matter how logical and moral your decision is, and she turns into a petulant little brat. She really is quite selfish and two-faced.

1) She is not forced to like Shepard, if he does something to loose her loyalty the romance is cut off, besides, how are the other ME2 romances any different?

3) How did Tali "run away?" She was there when the Normandy was destroyed, or so Jacob says. What was she suppost to do? Shepard was dead and she was just a stray quarian and, depending on your choices, her pilgramage was done.

4) You jsut contradicted your first post. In this you admit that she does not have to like Shepard no matter what and that she does have some backbone and a mind of her own. And just an FYI, morality is subjective to the individual, and you can't expect everyone to see your logic. Bassically you're complaing that she doesn't let you mold her into whatever you think she should be.

I find her an interesting character. Maybe moreso if her traits were a bit exaggerated, because then characters usually get pretty distinct and memorable that way. (Also see: Mordin.) But yeah, she's relatable and cool and stuff.

So why do we have to do a mission to gain their loyalty?

For them it's less loyalty and more removing distractions.

That's what the loyalty missions really are, removing distractions to let your team focus on the mission.

It would have been so much better if they took 'loyalty' out of the name.

It's also doing favours for them to accept your trust and lead.

Garrus and Tali already accept Shepard's lead, but they aren't okay with working for Cerberus, plus Cerberus rebuilding him/her doesn't really help in trusting him/her.

Everyone else, it's just basically getting them to trust you, and, as you said, remove any disctractions the squad is having.

I see we've got some hate going on here. Well, nothing us Tali fans haven't endured before.
