I like Tali, probably my 2nd favourite character in ME1/2, but I don't write fanfiction about her or think about her every waking moment.  Theres a difference between liking a character and being legitimately emotionally attached to the character... :(

So, as I said, discard the loyalty argument from both sides of the issue.

...Which I already have.

As for there being a difference between "obsession" and "loyalty", there really isn't a difference. The source of the loyalty is completely inconsequential. Why is Tali loyal? You could never use her at all in ME1, deny her the geth data, tell Udina you don't want her, AND tell her not to study your technology and she will still somehow be "loyal". It's not like Tali's so-called "loyalty" is any more valid than Liara's. It's a videogame and BioWare controls the characters to suit the story and not the other way around.

Now you are discussing this as a concept that could not be tied to the story. It can be argued the same for Liara as well. Why would Liara be loyal? In some games, I hardly ever used her, I did not speak to her often. In fact, I had two conversations with her and she already began speaking of romantic involvement with Shepard, and even after I apparently rejected her the game insisted I was in a relationship with her in the second game. That was how it was programmed, that is how it is presented. Fine.

This actually may be closer to the truth than we all think. Of course, 95% of the people who go through the sex scenes in video games are desperate and/or young'uns first off all...
But Tali is almost helpless in her dialogue and her actions. Her sex scene, in itself, is heavily pedophilic and borderline abusive. You are in control, much more so than with Miranda, who basically tricks you into fondling her. Jack, good or bad, is way too much work, emotionally.
Tali is safe sex.

So because your avatar is Mordin should I think you masturbate to him too?

Your responses are pretty borderline insulting.

Ah I apologize then, text is difficult to imply subtlety and sarcasm.

Even harder to read it.

I like Tali. I think she's much better written in ME2 than ME1, where she was basically a walking Deus Ex Machina. She's still not the most developed character ever, though, and her sex scene IS disturbing. It's easy to see why she's the most accessible of the love interests. But her fandom is flat out unhealthy.

I agree on the fandom, some of the stuff is a little overboard.

I don't find her sex scene all that disturbing she just seems awkward and nervous, it seems natural for her.  But I could see how someone could see it differently.

You know, I think I heard a gunshot over in the Tali topic, I think the OP took my advice, so no reason to continue this, just add one to the body-count.

RIP you poor SOB.

Wasn't there a thread with EXACTLY this title and question about a month ago? I swear, some people just don't think to use the search bar.

To answer your question, people like Tali so much for multiple reasons:
1) She's extremely well written and has an intriguing backstory/conflict.
2) Her geeky-yet-strong personality is appealing to a wide range of people.
3) Along with Garrus, she's the only squadmate to return and remain loyal to Shepard in Mass Effect 2. True loyalty and friendship goes a long way.
4) She's attractive in a psuedo-exotic way (and was designed as such).
5) Liz Sroka is a brilliant voice actress.

I'm certain I can think of other reasons, but those are the ones that stand out in my mind. But really, this question could be asked of basically anything in existence and the all-encompassing answer will always be this: "I like _______ because it has certain traits that I find appealing."

Tali just happens to appeal to a massive number of people, therefore her fanbase is large and very vocal.

This.

1) I would disagree. I don't think she's well-written. She's written very one-sidedly; basically she's forced into liking Shepard regardless of how she was treated in ME1.  Either way, "well-written and intriguing" is a judgment call. I found her Trial plot rather contrived and unrealistic.
3) That's bullcrap. Liara is a lot more loyal by default for actually saving Shepard's life after death. Tali ran away. Say what you will about Liara in ME2; the only reason Tali and Garrus are there are as fan service tokens.

Tali is only "sweet" if you cater to her whims. Show her any kind of defiance, no matter how logical and moral your decision is, and she turns into a petulant little brat. She really is quite selfish and two-faced.

Good post. Tali's a good person but she annoys me enough that I'm going to have her dead in my Renegade character's game.

People like Tali like people like Miri and Liara. I don't think Tali is that well-written at all, but that's my opinion, she is still a nice girl but there is room for improvement.

Tbh, I am not a Tali hater... It would be good to see her (like all other characters) develop in ME3.

I must have missed that part of the codex. No more friendly pats on the bottom from my Shepard.

For me I like her due to her being unique in one way more then anyone else. Her charactor seems to show more emotion then the others, and this is tied to the fact we can not see her face. Liz Sroka put in a great preformance into bring more emotion into the charactor then most of the other Voice Actors. Then to top that off the animators did a good job of showing even more emotion with subtle movements with the charactor and I think they did a better job with tali then they did with Miranda. Miranda the cinematic director was a little up in your face with the shots so you see less animation work instead you see either very tight view of a digital ass, though she was done well I think the work put into Tali was a little better.

For loyality that is all up to the writes, so really can't blame the charactor for not remember you being an ass to them in the previous game, or on who is coming to your rescure. Honestly I can't really see Laira actually saving my Shepard as there was no relationship. It was just a conveient plot device to alow the charactor to be remade for the new mechanics.

Tali is the most racist squadmate in ME2... she hates the Geth (Legion) even when it is revealed that they are on the organics side.
