Hi guys, not sure if this is the right place for this but I didn't see a specific Awakening tech support forum. I've encountered a rather annoying bug in the Defense of Vigil's Keep quest. I finish the first part of the siege without any problem, defending the gate against the first wave of attackers. I am then told to go and defend the eastern wall from the attacking children. However, when I finish killing all the children nothing happens - the codex still tells me to kill all of them, and nothing I do seems to trigger the next part of the siege. Any help would be most appreciated, as it'd be a real shame to get so close to the end with a character I've taken all the way from the start of Origins, only to be unable to complete the game due to a quest not triggering.

Bumping this thread because I've hit the exact same bug and there's absolutely nothing I can find on it, no workarounds, barely any acknowledgement of it's existence. Would really appreciate any help on this, it's a pretty big kick in the pants to simply not be able to finish because of a triggering error.

Same problem here ... I think I need to back and choose other way - defend the Amarant city :(
Maybe there is some console cheat to move on with the quest ?

Ouch, this sounds like yet another serious quest bug.

Some time back I encountered the silverite mine bug and it broke that character completely since all autosaves had been overwritten with bugged silverite mine saves - Awakening was new so I didn't pay attention to hardsaves, which we all know now is a fatal mistake.
I made a new character and played through origins again - when I finally got to Wending Wood I hardsaved constantly only to find out that each hardsave I had made was bugged by the (unknown to me) Velanna bug, where you can't trigger the second conversation with her 0.o
Slightly wiser this time I did make a hardsave before even entering this cursed forest but I had to replay everything. Of course I encountered the silverite mine bug again but was prepared, reloaded and unequipped everything before entering and at last, after months, I could finally continue my adventure unbugged :)
I didn't encounter the bug described in this thread simply because I didn't go that route but I'm certain I would if I had.

I'm not familiar with any fixes for it unfortunately so please post any suggestions for fixes here if you find any so we can be prepared when taking that route.

This part is from DA wiki and it doesn't hold any fixes but a walkthrough to check if things are done correctly and a warning about a few other bugs. It's full of spoiler of course:

Vigil's Keep Gates
At this point the battle is pretty straightforward: defend the gates
from darkspawn. After the fight a cutscene will play telling you The
Children are attacking the east wall. Go defend the east wall.
After the children are dead head out to the courtyard and dispose of the
darkspawn there, then head to the front gates to defend there. As you
come in sight of the front gates a cutscene will play showing you Seneschal Varel defending only to be killed by an ogre.
After the cutscene where The
Herald is highly upset you can speak to the medic, she will sell
medical supplies. After you make your purchases defend the gates
(again). A quick battle ensues then make your way back to the courtyard
and defend it. After defending the courtyard a massive armored ogre will
appear. This is a boss battle so fight accordingly. There will also be
Hurlocks, Genlocks, and a disciple or two.

Bug! When
defending the gates the quest possibly won't renew after killing droves
of darkspawn, causing you to fight a never ending horde.

Now head back to the gates and defeat The
Herald. Upon the defeat of The
Herald you see another (cut scene) telling you that you have
succeeded and as the darkspawn retreated they left a trail that even the
greenest of recruits could follow. They will also explain that you took
heavy losses and you are on your own for the final battle. You will now
get the quest Depths of Depravity. Your Vigil will stand to fight
another day. Don't forget to collect your loot from the Ogre and The
Herald

Bug! After the
fight, none of the characters outside can be interacted with, including
Wade.
Ambassador Cera and Yuriah
can still be traded with.

Wow, glad I chose to defend Amaranthine.

It seems that Awakening was indeed rushed and not given enough QA, as there are many game breaking bugs.

I missed out on over half a dozen side quests and loot because of quests and dialog's not triggering, most of it happening after W. Wood.  Here is my, as yet unaddressed list of issues.

Luckily I was able to finish the expansion (last night), but I hope all of this info is being recorded by somebody @ Bioware in order to create a suitable patch for future playthroughs.

sooultion by Lord Ed1:

What happened was that for some unknown reason 'the Herald' already spawned, behind the gates, behind the fog. Luckily I saw his red dot on the mini-map. I started shooting him with magic and arrows but they were blocked by the fog. Fortunatly I had Voldrik and Sergeant Maverlies with their special powers and I was able to take him down with those. Then the cut-scene played, me standing over a dead Armored Ogre which I didn't even fight. The loot appeared normally in the courtyard near the well.

it works. good luck

Some bug like this happened to me once in Redcliffe in Origins when defending the village, try to load back and start the quest over again....or try to use a cheat (as described in another thread) that makes the plot go on.
