I liked the City Elf the best. Especially if you take full responsibility for what you did. Then the story just seems like fate would have it and is more or less complete.

A good runner up is the Mage one. Provided that you always stick with Irving's side so to speak. Then it's more or less "complete" as well when you are recruited.

The one that I hated the most was the Human Noble. It simply misses the option of: "I don't freaking care about your stupid right of conscription Duncan. I'm staying here to defend my parents and that's how it's gonna be, blight or no." I would never abandon my parents like that, not in real life, not as character in a game.

I like the City Elf origin best. I think the story is the most compelling and tragic. I'd say the mage origin is a close second. In that origin I like to help out my good friend Jowen and my character becomes a voice for the usefulness of blood magic and the weakening of the Chantry.
The third best origin is the Dwarven noble, the backstabbing of the main character by brother Bhelen is great, and getting back at him later. I usually make Bhelen king but when I play a Dwarven noble, I cannot do it.

My least favorite origin is Dalish Elf. Losing your friend because he is over curious is not that compelling to me. Also felt like there was no sacrifice joining the Grey Wardens, it actually prolongs your life in this case.

My favorites are a tie between Castless dwarf and female city elf.

If I have a "canon" character it would be Veylya Brosca (I've redone her story twice and working on a third at the moment to make my "perfect" run to import into DA2 (whenever that finely get's straightened out.) I love the idea of coming from less then nothing (after all in Orzammar they don't exist) to becoming a hero.

the female city elf plays a lot different then the male. instead of the "save the princess" the male has (after all his bride lives he just joins the wardens instead of settling down and getting married.) ,

the female is kidnapped along with the other women, sees one of her friends killed in front of her, she starts fighting her way through the estate to find the rest of her friends, sees her recently met groom killed in front of her and so on. She goes from this to having humans look at her with respect and defer to *her* as a leader.

Female city elf is best story. It's like Kill Bill, roaring rampage of revenge. There was not a single live human left after I finished with that mansion.
Dalish elf is the weakest story, short and boring.

I'm partial to the mage origin. Aside from the insight on the mages, circle and the fade, and, as someone have said, Duncan being more personable in it, the origin lets you flesh out protagonist personality/ideology a bit more than other origins, imho. It's less 'predefined'.

Jowan situation lets you shape the some principal values of your character: respect for authority vs loyalty to a friend that can be later roleplayed farther out of prologue. There is opportunity to present your character as reckless or cautious, or self-assured in conversations with duncan/jowan/senior enchanters.

I just feel that when leaving the tower you are set upon the world almost in blank state aside from what you imagine your character to be and how you played your choices in the tower, whereas other backgrounds come with a bit more 'baggage' (that can be either discarded or embraced). City elves have good reason to be prejudiced against humans, human noble have at least some leaning towards honor, etc.

The mage... I just felt they are more free to make something out themselves.

Personal opinion, of couse :)

1. Human Noble: My canon Warden is a Human Noble. He's a legend. Anyhow, this Origins has everything you need for an awesome fantasy story on its own: Giant Rats? Check. Romance?  Check. Old Castle? Check. Treachery? Check. It makes the fight to reach Arl Howe in the Landsmeet questline so much more personal and gratifyimg. "I deserved...more"  Sorry Howe mate; life's a ****. Also gives you some unique Awakening dialogue with Nathaniel.
2. Dwarven Noble: Excursions into the Deep Roads, a close look at Dwarven politics (Orzammar is one of my favourite questlines) and some background on Bhelen. And again, treachery.
3. Dwarven Commoner: A great 'stick it to 'em' Origin. Awesome dialogue.
4. Mage: Gives you a personal look at Duncan. And his beard.
4. The elf ones. Though good (and I now appreciate the Dalish elf one even more, with all the Eluvians that seem to be popping up nowadaysPosted Image, they don't have the same impact as the first four.

Male Human Noble and Female City Elf for me.

Mage was a little uninteresting to be honest.

Dalish Elves and Mage - both very intersting backrounds and full of greatcharacters. In the Dalish storyline it was heartbreaking, how your friend was teinted and lost, after he just confessed his love for the soon-to-be warden
The Mage origin leads to some very interesting decisions and very deep dialogues

Dalish and Dwarf Noble.

Both of those left me feeling fully tied to the culture and narrative of my character. I wanted to make an indignant male dwarf noble, but after the origin story, I couldn't do it. He was just so....tough and honorable.

While I admit the story for the Dalish Elves isn't that deep I just really like the dalish don't know why but I do. Plus it's funny getting to yell at everyone that looks down on you.

Dwarf Noble is my favorite, but my canon Origin is Human Noble. I've played the Mage the most, but I HATE it. I've always wanted to play an evil, maleficar but I feel like such a wimp as a tower mage. Plus Jowan annoys the crap out of me. I hate Jowan, he's like the Jar Jar binks of Dragon Age, something that should just be put out of his misery for his and everyone else's sake. I wish you could help in making him tranquil.

Dwarf Noble story is awesome. Great twist, great plot.

I like human noble the best because of the involvement in more of the rest of the game than the others, and how it makes all of the terribly old fantasy cliches work perfectly. Next would be Dalish, because I just like the Dalish in general. After that would be dwarf commoner, because of the variety of things you do. Dwarf noble is next, because I like the future involvement in the story and Gorim's discount, but I don't like losing all of my stuff, especially the ones from DLC. The others are a tie because the mage one is boring, the city elf one is to simple (I only do male, so it's basically he kidnaps your wife, and you go all Inigo Montoya on him).
