Depressing chapter is depressing. Still good though. One of Maggie's major bones of contention with Wynne was Brennan I'm guessing.

Re-reading AoA since I have... a lot of free time now, once I finish my current Mass Effect playthrough, I think I'll make an effort at completing a Mage play through. One nice thing about reading mage focused stories, they help you get into the mood for mage characters.

Sad, but excellent chapter. I liked how you developed so many characters at once. Maggie is a bit more fleshed out, as is Wynne. And Maggie's reaction to the tower seems exactly right. The game really doesn't do much with a mage character returning. Even if your mage PC Warden loathed the tower, it would still be heart rending to see what happened. Maggie is experiencing a nightmare she didn't expect.

@Liliandra: Thank you!
And yeah, that's a bit part of their issues, but there will be more in the next chapter (or maybe the one after, depending on how far they get in the next one.) And then more later...
I tried pretty hard to make it so they were both technically not being unreasonable, since I don't think Wynne is a cruel person by any means. To her, the templars would torture him before executing him, and the idea of helping someone involved with the revolt, or any blood mage, would be so foreign she couldn't even comprehend it. (since Wynne totally has Stockholm Syndrome)   So letting him die there would be a kindness to her. Where Maggie is one of those people who will destroy anything that stands in her way when it comes to someone she cares about, law or order be damned, no matter what they did.
Not sure if it worked or not, but hopefully.

I love playing mages. They're such gamebreakers, but SO MUCH FUN. I swear. I'm still working on the Jowan dialogue for the Karma's Companions mod, I can't wait to do a playthrough on my new computer (thursday!) when its done.

@mousestalker Thank you. That was my thought exactly. Hating the tower or chantry isn't going to make a sane mage want to see all the people stuck in it die. But the game really gives you 0 reaction. You'd think they would include a friend in the origin who you see die or something. But no...

Look forward to seeing it either next chapter or after that. However long it takes you. :) Yes, both sides had valid points. Wynne would be right, the Templars would kill him for being a blood mage, either right away or eventually. I can see Wynne not really wanting to 'waste' her work healing him, though calling her a Stockholm case might be a bit much, she still fully embraces the Chantry's stance. (Ironicly, concidering her situation)

I like mages as well, every party has Wynne or Morrigon (or both) at any given time, I just never managed to get into being one yet. Hopfully, Analise will fare better then previous attempts. Already formed her personality concepts and most of her build plan Spirit/Creaton/Entorpy focused with Spirit Healer and Blood Mage specilizations.

Definatly keeping an eye out for that mod. :)

Spirit Healer/Blood mage can be an AWESOME build. Especially with a good chunk of spirit spells for damage.

Yay Fiona, going to touch on how Alistair thought Goldanna's mother is his? Or even a joke that the king of Ferelden's mother is an elven mage from Orlais? :D

And conga rats on the largest DA story on ff.net. As for how, well 73 chapters is not exactly a small number and the chapters themselves aren't a few hundred word blurbs that have seemed to be become more prevalent in the last few months

Well, it's not so much the "how is it the longest" as it is "how in the world did I find time to WRITE THIS DAMN MUCH?!" ;)

Yay Godwin! He has my favorite line in the whole game. :D "You turned them into a slightly sticky, somewhat runny paste." I chose that dialogue path every time. :D

Slight nitpick, the Templar and Desire Demon were after Irving's study, but otherwise fun. Glossed through the Fade like I wish I could normally. Though it was frighteningly easy on my Spirit/Ice/Lightning mage. I've been ssssooooo abusing Mana Clash and Storm of the Century.

Thanks! I love Godwin, I know I basically turned him into the neighborhood drug dealer, but that seems to suit him. I doubt his business began and ended with selling lyrium to templars like carroll.

I figured I would get something really wrong. I normally jump between the toolset and save games to make sure everything is at least in the right order. But, I just got a new computer so I wrote that on my laptop while I was installing the game and toolset still...

If you play on a PC there's a mod (appropriately enough called Skip the Fade) that sends you from Duncan right to your companion's dreams and on to the sloth demon, while still giving you all the stat boosts and codex entries. I love that mod so much.

As far as 'getting something really wrong', misplacing a room is hardly the end of the world. :)

I am on the PC, thought about using that mod, but I regularly take advantage of a system delay DA gets in the Fade on my vid card to squeeze an extra six+ stat points from the fonts. With the respec mod, it doesn't even matter where. :P

That would be too good to pass up...

And yeah, getting the rooms out of order isn't a huge deal. I''m just insane.

and an update...

I'm sure you're already aware of this, but let me just say that I got a kick out of the fact that when I typed "Apostates" into the google search-bar...one of the choices it came up to choose from was "of Amaranthine"  How ridiculously awesome is that?!

 :wizard:
One of these days I'll get around to reading that story....possibly winter break.  ^_^

So... I'll just say right now.

I'm sorry. I had to do it. It was becoming far too close to "the amazingly awesome adventures of anders and maggie who always win at everything they do forever"

No apologies. This was great. Although I cried.

Edited to add: Our weird parallels are continuing considering the very next chapter of Shades is Anders nastiness related.

You and me both. I hate being mean to them. I've had this written for ages, too. It's been kind of disturbing writing smut and all that knowing what was right around the corner.

And I've been dying to see what happens to Anders in Shades! Every time you update my first thought is "Anders?"

Next chapter. But there's a Fractures chapter first. I have to admit, I'm making myself do one story at a time, chapter wise. There are times I want to race ahead with Fractures and times I want to race ahead with Shades, but I'm controlling myself. I figure it's making me learn writing discipline. I know there are people who follow Shades and don't follow Fractures and vice versa, so I don't want to be unfair to either fan base (did I just write fan base? I have a fan base??? WOW..)

I'm keen to get into a big discussion about issues regarding this chapter but will message you rather than do it here, I don't want to hog your thread with post-traumatic-stress disorder...

I know the feeling. I was neglecting AOA for Blue Skies for a while, and now I feel like it's the reverse. I have the attention span of a child sometimes. It's just whichever one is being louder and flashier at the time.

Let's see... ah... meep!

Always rough to write/place beloved characters in bad/rough situations, it helps them still but painful. On the bright-side of it, you kept the 'peg knocking' as it were to a reasonable level. I've read some were the authors had their hero(s) taken down by a joke character/weak scenario/suddenly invented weakness.

I couldn't do that to them. I mean, if it wasn't something that could reasonably stop them it would just bug me. And it seemed like it was time for Maggie to deal with a problem she couldn't fix by killing something, since that's basically her go-to response.

And... an update.

I didn't write this in my review because I was on the iphone and it HURTS to type that slowly - but I loved that you sent the wardens back to get rid of the witness :). I also love that the Templar spent a good few hours in excruciating pain before he was killed.

Edited to add: Go to sleep woman. I have a moral objection to people staying up till 2am when they're not required to. People don't understand how precious sleep is!!! *crazed tic*.

Thanks! To me Fiona is completely a creature of common sense and pragmatism. So... huge dramatic gestures not only wouldn't appeal to her, I suspect they would just ****** her off. And, well, I put them leaving him alive in since I wanted her to have a reason to call them idiots. ;)

Considering one of her people was injured cleaning up the mess they left, I suspect Maggie will back off the Dramatic Gestures as well.
