Trecking through the dalish forest.... and unlocked the AW specialization.....haven't completed the quest yet but I keep pumping my dex/will/magic.... so far it looks like

Dex: 18

Will: 28

Magic: 29

Those are the only stats I've touched so far. Still can't wear even basic leather armor. Why is that?? Posted Image  I suppose I could equip a sword/shield.... but I have no idea if I'm doing this right....

You have to take the first talent in the Arcane Warrior spec tree to have magic substitute for your strength. That will allow you to wear heavy armor.

Also, stop adding willpower. You already have plenty. More than plenty....

Put almost everything in Magic.

Thinking of playing mage on my next playthrough, where do you unlock the AW?

Within the ruins of the Dalish forest. Keep your eyes open for a phylactery and altar in the same room.

You should have put all your points into Magic with 20 Dex. You don't need Willpower. You need 20 Dex to wear the armour, but you can modify your Dex via equipment.

Or you can add Willpower, and gain the inate ability to cast spells more often, as opposed to being reliant on gear.

It makes no sense for an arcane warrior to put points in strength.  Maybe some dex, maybe some willpower, but never strength.

I believe it is 38; meant for later use in game.

When you get the 4th AW Talent, battle becomes something you crave to see. To wear full massive plate, cast spells that fell entire platoons of Darkspawn, then watch them cut asunder when they realize that charging your position may not be the best of plans is a thing of pure fade attuned beauty.

Oh when does that happen? LOL.... I have the first talent...combat magic..... I must admit...cone of cold is the most useful spell ever....

should I waste points in getting inferno/blizzard?

Spell Might, Blizzard and Tempest is better for Storm of the Century. You'll become a walking God and the Darkspawn will call you Jesus.

Ok....staff vs melee.... which do yo prefer?

I mean...I have a sword..but for using CoC...I have to sheath my weapon....which sucks.....

Never had a problem with sheathing, I just let the animation run it's course, though there is a Mod available that doesn't require sheathing. I make my own lyrium pots, so I can either tank or cast spells. I prefer casting to whacking.

If you do go for Storm of the Century, watch out, it's radius is /much/ larger then Blizzard/Tempest's. It'll be very easy to get your own team (and yourself) caught in the damage radius. Neat/Evil trick, get another mage with Spell Might and either Blizzard/Tempest. Both cast on a room then close the door.

I prefer using a staff and spells, as auto-attack can get kind of dull.

Storm is much larger AOE than the spells used to cast it, and it goes thru walls. Stay away; far, far away. And placing a Glyph of Repulsion to block the door is also helpful, as well as Earthquake in pinning potential victims.

Hahaha well Juggernaut is actually not a bad set at all for AWs. But you should try getting either the Wade's Superior Dragonbone Plate set or the one right below it, whichever your mage can equip. I would also recommend Warden Commander's armor, but I do not know if stamina regen works for mages too. I say this because from dragonagewiki.com, I saw a couple staves with stamina regen... Perhaps they're warrior weapons.

As far as your weapons go, it depends: Are you intending to go close range like the Awakening's battle mage? Or do you like to still keep your range?

Situational, depending on WHAT staff and enemy it is. For example, a tier 7 staff with magic damage combined with affliction hex is usually stronger, but slower, than a sword, but you should really try both.

Also, the more you level the more effective swords are, because meelee damage scales more with attributes and tier of the weapon than staffs.

Remember that staffs will NEVER miss, but can´t crit either. So if the enemy has high def, a staff is usually better.
Against critters you will rarely / never miss anyways so the crit chance might be worthy, especially if you have a rogue with song of courage for better crit chance and appropriate weapons. A 50% Crit chance, or even death hex on bosses (=autocrit with every hit) Is a great advantage over the staff.

On the other hand, staffs are usually the better choice if you plan to use many offensive spells rather than buffs.

In my first playthrough I used almost only sword (the spellweaver), on my second I prefer the staff even during meelee. Both ways work on nightmare. I found casting instead of meelee autoattack more fun to play, but that´s personal taste.

I made the mistake of selling my staff once I became AW, thinking I wouldn't need it any more. It cost a lot, too, around 120G. You live and learn.
