That tells more about the competition and perhaps the journalists, than it does about the game.

You mean the same journalists/websites that have generally given every BioWare game glowing reviews? The same jounalists/websites that gave KoTOR and Baldur's Gate 2 their own Game of the Year nominations?

Clearly they must of been more enlightened back then. Or maybe they've always been on the take. The conspiracy theory possibilities are endless!

I agree....so far this year, ME2 is the game to beat. Red Dead Redemption was a true gem, but it's still plagued by issues, and GOW3 was all too typical (not necessarily a bad game, but not GOTY, in my opinion).

It's only July though, and there are some heavy hitters on the horizon.

Anyone think Fallout: New Vegas has a chance to claim GOTY?

I do, we'll just have to wait and see.

Red Dead couldn't top ME2. No other game this year will. Rockstar games usually dumps all over other games, but if they couldn't pull it off then gaylo reach and w/e that stupid starcraft game is never will. I'll be back at the end of the year to rub it in your face.

Wow. Is that really necessary? Halo:Reach is coming from one of the most passionate, creative, and ambitious game developers of all time. The team behind and Red Dead seems pretty dedictated, too. I consider these guys to be on-par with Bioware, and therefor have an equal chance of winning Game Of The Year. Halo 3 has already won  a GOTY award from X-Play, and with Reach being an even bigger and more ambitious game, it has just as good chance of claiming the prize as Mass Effect 2.

BTW,  grow up kid.

Mass Effect 2 wins Game of the Year award: These journalists don't know what a good game is!
Mass Effect 2 doesn't win Game of the Year award: See? These journalists just proved that this is not a good game!

me2 is best game of this year (so far), easily, it's even better than Batman: AA and the best games of last year, imo.

Even though I like me2, my personal GOTY so far is Heavy Rain.

Never had the opportunity to play Heavy Rain, but I wouldn't mind. Red Dead does have some bugs in it, I will admit. Halo.....has never been considered GOTY material for me, I'm sorry. I think they're good games...just not GOTY worthy (well...maybe the first one, mainly for originality).

Batman: AA....okay, THAT was GOTY worthy! It was the first Batman game that actually made you feel like you were playing as Batman. As for being better than ME 2.....hmmm....that's....a toss up for me. It's too hard to decide which is better.

ME2 is my personal GoTY so far as well. RDR is a really close second, but a definite second.

We'll see how the list shifts when New Vegas comes out though.

Yeah Batman AA was really great. Speaking about RDR, I think that bugs are great part of this it. Without them the game wouldn't be so hilarious.

I thought RDR and Mario Galaxy 2 were going to be bigger competition for GOTY. I found both games disappointing.

Starcraft 2 and all RTS is a niche genre. Fallout Vegas will be a boring, brown desert for 25 hours. Fable 3 will be a colorful but mediocre 10 hour game. Halo Reach is going to be a great multiplayer game, but it will probably be the exact same single player campaign that has been recycled in every previous Halo game. I really can't think of any titles of the same caliber as ME2 in 2010.

edit - maybe if RAGE comes out in 2010...

Calling the complaining crowd "haters" is quite... not on par. More like the actual critics, who actually played, payed attention and have some issues with the way it went.

Also, the picture shows how the "non-complaining crowd" is fat. But who would care.

Coincidentally, I wouldn't have ever been able to play Mass Effect 1 had Electronic Arts not taken BioWare away from Microsoft and ported it over to the PC. If not for that, Mass Effect would still be a XBox-exclusive console game.

If only we would have been so lucky.

I don't think he was directing that at the critics but at the ps3 fanboys who hate the game simply because they can't have it, trust me it happens all the time.  Don't believe me?  Check out the ign review thread.

I can't picture ANY Mario game winning GOTY, They recycle too much of the material for it to be innovative. I'm waiting for the day when Nintendo has the guts to make something new

Miyamoto did say in an interview the other day he and Nintendo will probably be announcing something completely new at E3 next year. It's only been what 10 years since they came up with something new.

I'm overall happy to see ME2 get game of the year from X-play. They're gonna have some tough competition from Reach and Fallout New Vegas though. I'm sure ME can stand up to the challenge.

As much as some people may decry Fallout 3's fame, it was a good game, in the long view of games that came out. It remains one of the few games that put out a good slew of dlc that breathed life into a game that may have become stale. As for Fallout New Vegas, we'd all be good to remember that it's being developed by the same people who made Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, and if you've been keeping up with the news on it, it's looking to be a great game, lots of interesting features, such as their new Hardcore mode. So I wouldn't write that off completely as a non-contender

Yes, but after dissapointing Alpha Protocol I don't have much faith on Obsidian. I mean, the story there was great, but gameplay and visuals were really crappy.

Metroid: Other M might have a chance, though.
