Which shows how ridiculous GOTY awards are. Halo 3 was nothing more than an average closing to an overrated trilogy. The only reason Halo was successful was because it was the first console FPS to have decent controls. When it was finally ported to the PC, PC gamers realised that Halo presented nothing that hadn't been done before, and done better. ODST was mediocre; and I expect nothing less from Reach.Aryck1095 V2 wrote...
Halo:Reach is coming from one of the most passionate, creative, and ambitious game developers of all time.
Halo 3 has already won a GOTY award from X-Play, and with Reach being an even bigger and more ambitious game, it has just as good chance of claiming the prize as Mass Effect 2.
For me, Bungie's best game by far is ONI.
What are GOTY awards based on? Product sales? MW2 sold like hotcakes, but it was terrible. Popular vote? Then it's going to be biased by people finding ways to rort the system. The reviewers? Then you're getting "professional" opinions from a select group biased by their individual tastes.
GOTY awards are silly, period.

Yes. Which is why I said 3/4?

I think Bungie's best game was Myth: The Fallen Lords. Great game.

Same, I'm very interested to see what Team Ninja can do with Other M.FieryPhoenix7 wrote...
Yeah, Metroid might actually have a chance. I loved Ninja Gaiden to death back on the original Xbox.
I wouldn't rule it out either. I played the beta and wasn't overwhelmed - it was definitely fun but not incredible. On the other hand, we haven't seen single player yet, and if it really turns out to be the return to Halo CE they've been selling it as, it could do very well with mainstream critics.LPPrince wrote...
Well, maybe not Reach, but it could surprise people.
I've really enjoyed ME2, Heavy Rain, and Alan Wake. ME2's the frontrunner for me still, I think - ME2 wasn't perfect, but the other two were more flawed. Heavy Rain had some outstanding moments though. I still have to get to Red Dead.

Game of the Year awards ought to be separated into best singleplayer game of the year and best multiplayer game of the year.AmstradHero wrote...

It's a hybrid shooter that allows you to switch between third-person side-scrolling/platforming to first person HUD combat using the Wii Remote (and aiming with it as well).
Also, it's being co-developed with Team Ninja, known for making the Ninja Gaiden series. Expect a lot of Nintendo gamer nerdraging over the highest extreme difficulty that's likely to be in the game.
Personally, I'm looking at Rock Band 3 for GOTY, guys.
And for the record, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is incredible and those saying that too little changes between Mario Games probably needs to recall the mechanical changes between games. The main gameplay remains the same, because Mario probably defined platformer games, but I don't think you'd play Super Mario Galaxy the same way you would Super Mario Sunshine.
In their defense, this year's E3 was a really tough show to compete in.Pocketgb wrote...

Sorry youve had so many issues with the game but I believe ME2 is definitely GOTY material. The competition is ramping up though and for many people(not me) ME2 is getting stale. So x-play is right, its the best game, so far....KeeLoGee wrote...
Well Gamespot gave ME2 their GOTY award after they reviewed it so I'm not surprised at this. The GOTY feel wore off after like 3 playthroughs when all of the bugs and crap started to emerge. I'll admit right now that this is more like a "Game of the Week" or "Game of the Month" since that's the window of time you can play this game before you start experiencing the things that people have been posting about in the Tech Support sections.

Actually, in that case, I'd expect the next DLC to be announced within 2 weeks, released in August, and then the Shadow Broker DLC to be announced in September and released in October, right before Fallout: New Vegas is released.Mendelevosa wrote...
ME2 is starting to get somewhat stale, which could knock it off of it's spot. Hopefully the upcoming DLC will keep it fresh and enjoyable.

Say Black Ops has record breaking sales, but ends up being a fail, getting average ratings, with fans complaining left and right.
Would that make it GoTY?
Compare that to ME2, which is one of the highest rated games of all time, has a steady stream of DLC coming our way, and has made pretty much every reviewer praise Bioware for a job exceptionally done.
As much as I say how I feel ME2's story drops WAY short of ME1's sense of epic space opera, I also say ME2's gameplay was much better.
Even if ME2 gets robbed of the GoTY award(which I sadly feel it will, unless a truly better game comes out, which some people are already saying is Red Dead), lets hope Bioware takes ME1's epic story, ME2's combat, and combines them to make ME3 the game to finally top Ocarina of Time as the highest rated game EVER.

I would be very happy with Bioware if they did that.
I wouldn't get it since I already have everything, but that would really help refresh the minds of reviewers.

I think there's a balance. If you have a immensely great story, fun combat and gameplay, excellent multiplayer, sell a heck of a lot of units, and be critically raved, you have a GOTY contender right there.
ME2 is in there sans multiplayer, but still, Halo: Reach is just on the horizon. And Red Dead Redemption fits all of those categories. I would say StarCraft II, too.

Both of those are made by Treyarch, however. I don't think any of the games Treyarch has ever developed has won a Game of the Year Award.SithLordExarKun wrote...

You must be joking. Bungie is the laziest developer out there. Creative? More like rip-offs. You might want to do some research on the company your so adamantly defending.
Edit: And banning people from multiplayer for leaving the game is one of the reasons Halo: Reach isn't as popular as they had hoped for. Lets look at it this way. Infinity Ward releases a map pack. You pay $15 for about 4-5 new maps. They add the maps to the normal playlists so that you and others who bought the map pack can play them, but they also dedicate 2 playlists to that new map pack for a while.
Now. Bungie releases a map pack. But only, instead of adding it into the playlists for people who bought it to play along with people who didn't to play the original maps, they block off all but 1 crappy playlist for the people who didn't pay $10-$15 bucks for their map pack. So in fact, they are forcing you to buy their map pack in order to unlock the full multiplayer playlist again.
People got tired of that junk. And with good reason. Now they're not only going to repeat that process, but they will ban you from matchmaking for quitting matches. What happens if you were just playing for a few minutes before you had to go somewhere? Or if your internet goes out? What happens if someone is hacking in the match your playing, something that is very common in halo, and you just want to leave? That's just two examples of the retarded things Bungie does. So don't expect to see them on the GoTY awards list. It'd be a real surprise if they were on there.
