I bought the EA Value Games version for the PC.  It installed fine, I downloaded the patch, and I got to the menu (with the play, uninstall, support, ect options). When I hit play, however, the game won't launch.  I was getting "Mass Effect has stopped working," so I allowed it to be an administrator. Now I can't even get the menu up to select play.  No waiting sign on the mouse - it's like I never clicked the shortcut at all.  I un-installed the game and tried it again, but the menu still won't come up to allow me to try to re-install.

Specs
Manufacturer: HP
Model: HP G70 Notebook PC
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU T6500 @ 2.10GHz
RAM: 3.00
System Type: 32-bit OS
OS: Vista

To be honest, I don't know what video card I have.  Forgive my ignorance.  I know very little about PC gaming, and I only picked this up for my laptop because it was a) cheap and B) highly recommended by a friend, and I only have a PS3.

Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Cheap laptop probably = Intel video, which is generally not capable of running the ME games.

To find out what graphics card you have, hit Windows Key + R and type "dxdiag" in the Run window that appears. (I'm pretty sure that keyboard shortcut still works under Windows 7, but I can't be sure as I'm on XP.) Under the Display tab it should list name, manufacturer, etc. for your video chip/card. If it's Intel integrated graphics, there's your answer. :( If it's ATI or Nvidia, you may be able to get it to work - in that case post what it says about the name of the card, and also the Version and Date for the driver in the same Display tab.

Agreed.  The newer ME-2 goes so far as to NAME the Intel chip as being essentially useless for game playing.

The article above is some of the basics about what 3D games need in the way of graphics hardware.  I think that the failure of laptops to offer a video upgrade path is also mentioned in it.

I can tell you right now I don't have a cheap computer but I am having the same problem. I have tried everything from net framework to reinstalling everything and trying again. Nothing seems to work and the game still does not start. It's odd too because when I first bought the game it ran perfectly fine on this machine... I reformatted my system and reinstalled windows xp 64 bit and now the game will not work no matter what I try and not only that but NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON has even come close to answering this question. A few have only answered with dumb responses... like did you check if your power was on? or did you google it? idiots... I require a logical answer. So if anyone out there knows what the problem is and knows how to fix it then please some assistance would be fantastic.

You probably took the name of the forum to be a literal application of the words as any ordinary person usually does, as if there was someone from Bioware hanging around to answer questions as an official tech.  But in spite of what they named it, that's not the case.  We are gamers here writing questions to other gamers for advice.  We are as likely to be illogical as anyone may be from time to time.

I would assume that the official support site at EA has people there who are also occasionally human enough to be illogical themselves.  When you want anything from us, treat us as being prickly, short-tempered, and impatient, and then you'll be in the mood for this place.

P. S.  In between starting to answer, and finishing with the pasted in parts, I mentally remade this from ME-1 to ME-2, and inserted the wrong data at first, but it's fixed, now.

So if someone happens to only own a laptop and would like to play Mass Effect, are there any recommendations?  Is it possible to update the video card?  My video card is Intel Graphics Media Accelerator.  I just happened to buy both games and was surprised that even on my new laptop, I can't play them :-(.

Newness means nothing, when Intel is involved. If your laptop had any video upgrade option, it would already have something in it better than Intel. AMD is about to embarrass Intel into finally paying attention to graphics. Their FUSION combined multi-core CPU with the graphics of a real video card totally integrated into them is almost here, with the mobile parts due just about on the New Year's turn.

Being incredibly rude and calling people "idiots" will not get your tech problems answered. Since you want to be a complete twerp heres my advice. Drop your computer out of the nearest window that will make it run REALLY FAST.
