Any reason why ME2 is $40 after only 6 months?

Time for Facts because I hate these kinds of posts:

Mass Effect launched 11/20/07 so three years ago and has sold to date 2.23 million copes on Xbox. Source: http://www.vgchartz....ame.php?id=7635

Mass Effect 2 launched 01/26/10, this year, and has sold 1.81 million copies on Xbox. Source: http://www.vgchartz....me.php?id=28815

I think there is little thought that Mass Effect 2 is a flop, in less than 7 months it has nearly sold as many copes as Mass Effect 1 has sold over almost 3 years on the Xbox.

I think they just want to move copies and build up for big news hence the price drop and the demo. Keep the momentum rolling.

But did you notice that over 50% of sold ME2 copies were sold on the first week? ME1 was loved by both reviewers and its target audience, so most people who got ME1 loved it and automatically preordered ME2 or bought it very quickly.

I highly doubt ME2 will be selling significantly more than ME1, considering that the story is possibly the single most important element in ME and most people won't be interested the sequel unless they know how awesome the story is so far.

Yeah, Javi's just reinforcing the fact that a while ago we heard that they were thinking about it.

That doesn't mean they're GOING to.

We know there's a Liara/Shadow Broker DLC that might come our way, but that's the closest you're going to get.

Don't get all hyped and excited only to get your hopes rained on.

What do you mean thinking about it? Casey Hudson confirmed that they will do an expansion, but its going to come out closer to the release of ME3. So don't be looking for it any time soon. Mass 2 just came out this January. Let the game sink in a little before you start expecting an expansion.

Source plox.

3 things.

Seeing that Mass 3 is supposed to come out late 2011 - early 2012, an expansion would likely be released in 2011. Look at #3 below for that. #'s 1 and 2 show Casey Hudson and Adrian Cho both confirming an expansion pack to bridge the gap between Mass 2 and 3. Someone on another thread said that Casey meant DLC packs, like Overlord. Well overlord wasn't a "potentially larger pack". It didn't tell a "big portion of the story" and it certainly didn't connect "Mass effect 2 to Mass effect 3" in any way. If you want to continue being pessimistic about Bioware releasing an expansion, be my guess. I'm not saying it's coming out in August or September like most of the people on here, but it's most likely going to come out some time 2011.

And given the article about EA's announcement, its early 2011. Especially since Hudson said that they weren't going to take a long time to make Mass 3. They started December 2009. Or at least I read that in one of the articles back then. Hudson said the development of Mass 3 will be along the lines of Mass 2, which was 2 years. So late 2011 or early 2012 Mass 3 will be released. After reading about when they plan to release the "potentially larger packs" that "tell a big portion of the story" and connect "mass effect 2 to mass effect 3" you'll notice that an expansion in 2011 is highly likely.

1. Casey Hudson: "It's tough to say how long we'll continue to do Cerberus Network in terms of the free content, for example. When you get Cerberus Network you get all this free stuff that's been released. On an ongoing basis we plan to have the whole spectrum, from a free item all the way up to paid stuff and potentially larger packs that tell a big portion of the story. And we want to do that in a way that connects 'Mass Effect 2' to 'Mass Effect 3.' I think we'll be pretty close to the release of 'Mass Effect 3' before we really start focusing on that as the next story."

2. Adrian Cho: "What I can say is that we're going to be offering a lot more range of content from maybe a weapon, a new gun to new armours, new helmets, side quests up to full expansion packs," ME2 producer Adrien Cho toldCVG. "So a lot more variety to keep players engaged. For someone who wants a new weapon, they can have one, but I'd want more hours for the Mass Effect universe and those are going to be in the pack."

3. EA: Click Here

I rest my case.

Don't rest your case just yet.

1. Potentially= No guarantee

2. Maybe= No guarantee

3. "something far-reaching from Mass Effect"= No guarantee of an expansion

I know! There are so many bugs and stuff, it is obvious they had to rush it and couldn't put it through proper QA and I'm pretty sure they will not devote the resources needed to patch bugs for an expansion pack.

So... you're saying that Mass Effect 2 sold a lot only recently because of Mass Effect 1, but then go on to say that it won't sell a lot because of Mass Effect 2? Also, how would people know whether the story is good or not without spoiling the entire thing for themselves?

Mass Effect 1 is the best advertisement for Mass Effect 2, but for people who started only with Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 2 is also the best advertisement for Mass Effect 1, especially when Mass Effect 1 was selling for less than the price of a Mass Effect 2 DLC.

Expect the same to occur when Mass Effect 3 is released.

Probably just Shepard's bad ending, for obvious reasons.

Dragon Age did the same thing with the Ultimate Sacrifice, anyway...

The game doesn't even make a save file if Shepard dies, so yeah.

You misinterpreted my post. What I meant was that ME2's 1 million sales on the first week and then a quickly decreasing amount of sold copies per week indicates that most people who will ever buy ME2 have already bought it.

And I don't know about you, but I'd never buy the the sequel to a game I haven't played, if the game's main attraction is a good story and its consequences. I don't think many people will first buy ME2 and then ME1, because ME2 completely spoils the plot for ME1.

I'd also like to note that it's very rare for a sequel to outsell the first game when there's a continuing plot which is the focus of the entire experience. In ME2's case this might be slightly mitigated by the fact that ME2 got better reviews than ME1 and has a wider appeal, but reviews sadly don't have a huge affect on sales usually. (Just compare the sales and metacritic scores of Assassin's Creed 1 and The Force Unleashed to that of, say, Bioshock 1.)

Nothing would make me happier than to be proven wrong, though, since ME1 & 2 are along with KotOR my favorite games ever.:)

My apologies, then.

I can't really think of a sequel that imports data from the original game, so it's difficult to compare the Mass Effect series to any other. Otherwise, I would have used Uncharted 2 as an example.

Wasn't expecting this much talk about an expansion. As far as I know it's all speculation from the members here. Solid speculation, but speculation none the less. An expansion pack would kick ass, but like others have said, don't get your hopes up. I'm fully expecting more $7 DLC like "Overlord" in the future, though. Small tidbits that could connect Shepard to ME3.

As for the people saying I'm complaining for a price drop... I'M NOT COMPLAINING! I was just wondering. I just want ME2 to be an economical success, increasing our chances of more Mass Effect after ME3. Possibly into the PS3 as well. (Hey, the more the merrier.) :)

Did you read my response BEFORE that post?

Maybe+Probably+Something Far Reaching=No 100% guarantee of getting one.

Therefore, don't get people's hopes up until they say, "Yes, we ARE working on an expansion."

I'm sure they are, but they haven't actually gone out and said it was DEFINITELY happening.

Speculating's not so bad. There's a chance they are making one. But people getting all excited thinking it IS happening is a bit worrying. I don't want people getting a sour taste in their mouth if we never get one.

Oh, and PS3 is never happening. Microsoft made sure of that.

Didn't BioWare say they were releasing a series of add-ons to bridge the gap btwn 2 and 3? I dunno if they'd release a single expansion. Though an expansion would great. Hopefully it'd be better than Awakening, though Stolen Memory and Overlord were both excellent, so there's no worries there.

Javier, I remember back in the day in the old forums how you always broke news before everyone even knew it even existed, and always had the scoop in current events to an obscene degree.

Now that you're on the inside and BioWare has took the "if you can't beat them, join them" approach, your credibility has not waned, sir.

All that said, if you say an expansion is happening, it darn well is gonna happen!

Sure there is a drop but given that it hasn't been out for 2 and a half years I think the tail end of this sales will get it beyond what ME1 sold in the same time frame.  Especially with this demo now and price drop.
