I loved the elevators. I used to take the long way to my destinations, many times having to go through an elevator or two. They were fun, and a nice break from combat or talking to someone.

Plus, it kept you in the game world. I absolutely HATE the loading screens in ME2.

It totally takes you out of the experience. Which is why I miss elevators and the DECONTAMINATION CHAMBER.

God, how I miss that chamber.

For one, elevators have news reports or squad member banter. Many times, this cured the boredom of not being able to move at all, not to mention the assignments you got from listening to news reports. I think that's why the game made you take an elevator to and from the Normandy on the Citadel, because I know the biotic extremists holding the politician hostage was a news report, and some missing surveys were included on the elevator too. And you could hear of your exploits as well.

For another thing, I swear the loading screens in ME2 are longer than any of the elevators in ME1. At least, they felt longer. I got very frustrated staring at a loading screen for what seemed like ages. Maybe if they were comparable to the loading screens in ME1, it wouldn't be so bad. I feel like all the sweet graphics in the loading screen made them even longer.

That leads me to one more reason the elevators were better. In the elevators, the game doesn't really stop. Sure, you can't move, but you can still go to the menu, check your inventory, journal, etc. But your character was still there. Shepard didn't disappear in place of some loading screen, which seemed to break the flow of play. Even if you can't move in the elevators, it still feels like you're playing, especially with squadmate dialogue.

I think, in all honesty, what made the elevators interesting for me was the banter between your team, I would have liked to have seen that developed.

What I don't get is why people seem to think the load screens in ME2 are an improvement, when, like so many pointed out, they are identical to the elevator, infact the elevators were a bit more interesting.

Developing the elevator concept for other load areas would have been great to see in ME2.

I wonder on the actual number of people who complained about the elevators.

Most people I know who have ME1 didnt like the slowness <- of the elevators but did like them because of the party conversations.

The same folks think the loading screens and the end of mission screens in ME2 should be shoved out the airlock.

Its not nostalgia if you still enjoy the elevators when playing ME1.

I dislike the loading screens, mostly because they feel more jarring than the elevator loading screens did in ME1. I also miss the squad banter which felt (note felt) reduced in the sequel.

Ill just say that I love ME2, just a point of contention.

I personally can't say **** about the loading screens in Mass Effect 2, because they remind me of the loading screens in Homeworld. You can't fight that slight whiff of nostalgia.

the people at my school who like the elevators tend to like rpg's and the extra bit of realism.

the people who didnt were the knuckle heads who made cod mw2 game of the year.

I like the conversations my squad had on the elevators. I also like the airlock.

One word: No.

You don't get nostalgia over a two year old game.

Please end the usage of this ridiculous reason.

Taken back. See Sylvius' post and there it is. ^_^

the main reason i didn't like them was that missions were structured around elevators. it sometimes seemed awkward, like the elevator on ilos.

the main reason i liked elevators was the squad banter. if there was squad banter like in me1 or like in dragon age: origins, i wouldn't care about elevators missing.

Party banter. I miss that so much, and elevators was where that mainly happened.

nah it was the game critics that complained about the elevator. Those guys who play it once (or maybe half way through) and knit pick everything. The fans always had the loading screen option on the Citadel and the vast majority still used the elevator. That says something doesnt it. Bioware is to quick to please the critics so it can get a higher review thus sell more copies. Bet it didnt occur to them to put the option in again.

You know what constantly takes me out of the Mass Effect universe?

Sitting on my bed drinking cider with a controller in my hands, being able to see the edges of my TV in my peripheral vision, roommates asking questions...basically, not being there. At least installing the game shortened the load screens with rapid transit.

Not to mention there are only 6 elevators in the whole game that actually get the "banter" excuse. You spend most of your elevator time just staring at your squadmates and/or playing with the camera.

Not that DEM HIPS isn't the best loading screen ever, of course...

That sounds more like the people who complain on the forums about BioWare games. The elevator isn't the only solution to more squad banter.

Morality & Squad Banter in ME3: Building Consensus (1)

The level design team planned out each of the hub worlds in Mass Effect 2 with a million doors, ramps and stairs so that the rest of the level loads in the background while you're running around. I doubt that will change, if only because of the hardware limitations imposed by consoles and low-end PCs (which affects how much they detail they can extract out of Unreal Engine 3.5).

Also, I can't find the link right now, but if you replace the loading *.bik files, it loads even faster.

Apparently the regular loading screen doesn't go away until the animation has finished playing, so removing the animation speeds it up.

Loading times went from 1-2 minutes (even on the Normandy) to 5-10 seconds with both fixes.

I completely hated the very slow moving elevators. So I asked myself this question why do I miss them so much. I came to this conclusion, it's because I feel like a choice has been taken away from. In ME1 if you didn't want to wait on the long elevator you could always take the citadel transit(except for the places that didn't have a transit center ahem noveria:pinched:) anyways you had the choice of the loading screen or the elevator. Once they took that choice away from me I felt slapped in the face. Now I'm just forced to watch a loading screen that isn't even all that appealing to me and I think that's why I miss the elevators so much.

You would fit in well on the Deus Ex 3 boards.

What people miss is the interraction between NPCs. They kept cutting and cutting it until it was completely gone in the Overlord DLC.

There's never been much NPC interaction in any Mass Effect DLC.

Well elevators were nice when they were relevant to the situation.  For example: when youre on the citadel, the big elevator gave you a sense of how huge the citadel really was.  Then sometimes the elevator rides just didnt make sense in some areas.

You know, the more I reflect on it, there wasn't that much in the core game. The elevators are, to my recollection, the only time squadmates speak to each other excepting the Kaidan/Ashley chat in the Wards. Even the much extolled "staff meeting" cutscenes in between plot worlds had everyone either talking directly to Shepard or making snide jokes to no-one in particular (I'm looking at you, Chief).
It's nice to know all we need to balance the field is a DLC of one conversation, roughly five lines long, per squad pairing. I figure we can get away with half as many conversations since there's twice as many squad members as before. Wait, can we extract the loyalty fight lines from that? Saves us two entire conversations

They did add a bit of banter with squadies on the ship but its ONLY on the ship and between the PC and the NPC really, the rest is un-named crew chatting and only sometimes when you walk past them.

I believe I recall X-play made a big deal about the elevators, which was foolish.

Ir rather watch the elevator and listen to the banter OR news casts then watch a silent load screen show me the same image for a bit... over... and over... at every load point.

On the lack of squad banter in the DLC, I seriously think it comes down to basic costs. I doubt its cheap to get the voice actors in to just do a couple lines and then also include their own work routines.
