I have a certain situation that I can't seem to find the exact answer to.
I have Mass Effect 1 for the PC and it works perfectly fine. The problem is that I only have 9gigs of free space left on this partition of 30GB. I'm going to Download ME2 from Direct2Drive and it requires that I have 15 gigs available.
I would like to uninstall ME1 to free up some space on my computer but I don't want to remove the save data that can transfer over to ME2.
Can I backup the save data, uninstall ME1 then import the save data into ME2? Is that possible? Your replies are greatly appreciated!

Yep, back up My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save\\
(The ME1 uninstaller may actually leave your saves, but I'm not certain; backing them up is always a good idea.)
Once you get ME2, you can either run its config utility and point it to a directory with your ME1 saves, or manually transfer all Char01*.MassEffectSave files to My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect 2\\Save\\ME1\\
