Lazuli - its okay. These are not real characters. "Liara" wont take offense to my comment.
Yes, I know. But I'm not sure you understand how damaging hate speech is and how it works. Any number of people on these forums could be affected in some way or another by words you callously throw around. Please, try to be more sensitive and follow the rules of the boards. There are plenty of other words to use, words not quite as loaded.
I'm not calling for censorship. I'm calling for respect.
Oh please. Are you really sure that you mean this, or are you just using it as an excuse for your own pathetic fanboyism?
Ashley does not exist. She has no family members. Nobody except those that take the game way too seriously are going to get offended, and those people have serious problems.
When you immediately accuse someone of fanboyism, there is the danger that whatever meaning your statement might have had is then lost. The target of his words is completely irrelevant. By your logic it should be socially acceptable to tell racist jokes so long as members of the race targeted by the joke aren't present.

There is no hate speech in the op's statement. Maybe not the best choice of words, but not hate speech. Grow a thicker skin if you're over sensative to the word. That is you're problem, not the op's or anyone else.
You're trying to classify it as hate speech, because you don't like the word. Deal with it.
You'll notice that I said "hate speech," not just "hate." I'm classifying it as hate speech because the word is a slur.
JohnnyDollar wrote...
Once again, what the op said is not hate speech. If someone is "affected" in some way by a word(s) because they are over sensative, then that is their problem. Once again you are trying to classify it as hate speech, so you can therefore say it is against site rules, because you don't like the word. The word was not directed at any forum members btw either.
So when someone's feelings are hurt by slurs, when someone's self esteem is degraded by insults, it's the victim's fault for being sensitive?
And the target is completely irrelevant.
JohnnyDollar wrote...
Quite the contrary, you are calling for censorship.
It's a thin line, I'll agree. I don't want to take away anyone's power to say a word. I want them to realize the power their words hold. Hopefully, that will be enough for them to reconsider their word choice.

I am guessing that it has nothing to do with the characters but with the word retard, I am guessing Lazuli is either mentally challenged or has sombody close to him that is mentally challenged and that is why he finds the word offensive.
Either that or he is just a retarded fanboi who takes criticism against his favorite characters as a personal insult.
You're correct in that it has nothing to do with the characters, but with the word in question. I can't say as much for the rest of your post. I'm not sure the personal attacks are called for.

Just sent a message to get this thread closed. It needs to be.
OP, the next time you try to make a thread and not have it go downhill, please be careful of the words you choose to convey your feelings.
I used to have the sailor mouth problem, but I'm long over it. Kinda ironic I'm the one doing this.
You should try again after this thread gets closed, but again, watch what you say, and re-read the rules of the forum so as to not break them and get suspended/banned for hate speech/inappropriate language.
And for those of you tossing that word around- don't.
Its not allowed. The more you think its okay to say and use, the bigger the problem gets.
I have an idea, don't be an ass. The thread doesn't need to be closed down. Are you people really that affected by one word? Get over it. I'm sure you're writing a message to get me banned. *shrugs* ahh well.

Anyways, regarding the question. I never did like Ashley. Her family issues, recitation of poetry, meh looks, and xenophobia really puts me off. Go for the naive alien chick.

"Hate Speech", a phrase flung around far too often when it does not apply. Often used to attach a negative stigma to someone, whose words you either don't like, or disagree with. Often attempting to censor them, or try to diminish and dismiss what they are saying, while being unable to provide an adequate rebuttal to refute what they are saying.lazuli wrote...

The word may be a slur to you, and it is relative I think. You may find the word offensive, it isn't everyone else's responsibility to cater to one's personal sensibilities.
If one is oversensative, or suffering from a persecution complex for example, that is a personal issue that needs to be addressed. It is not the responsibilty of everyone else that communicates or comes into contact with that person, directly or indirectly.lazuli wrote...

You could have taken a different approach about this in you're statements, without accusing the op of posting "hate speech", to get you're point across.
I see jargon and speech on this forum that I personally dislike and find very distateful quite often, however I do not attempt, neither do I want to censor it. Slanderous personal attacks are quite another thing though. Ultimately, it's up to the mods to decide in this forum, and we have the site rules as a guide to go by. I don't believe the op broke any site rules in his or her original post.

You can always use the gibbed save editor, if you don't want to replay ME1 for the sole purpose of changing the LI.

You're right. I wasn't trying to stigmatize him, though apparently that has been the effect. And I know that not everyone is offended by the word. I just think that if you don't say anything when something offensive pops up, it leads to the degradation of the dialogue used here. I know you won't agree with me, but I see it as taking a stand.

Even though no offense was intended, using that word enforces the idea that mentally challenged or handicapped people are somehow of lesser worth than the rest of us. I will not stand by and let that happen.

I agree that I could have phrased things more gently in my initial post. But I wanted people to stop and think about the words they use. Even if I can't change peoples' minds about a word like the word in question, at least it led to this dialogue between us.

like several people have said, just use an downloaded save or a file edit (no big deal either way). if you are just going after the romance change anyways... won't matter because you'll be pursuing new options in ME2
@Controversy:
"hate speech" is kinda overkill... rude, obnoxious, a little ignorant sure... but "hate speech" is out of context... friendly fire, isn't... no matter who's shooting.
