i'm trying to make a bomb that just targets the ground. if an enemy is within the area of effect it is supposed to get affected by the effects of the bomb. what i have now is that the player can target a creature directly as well as the ground but that is not desirable because it's possible for the player to then just click on the enemy instead of having to aim at the ground and try to catch the enemy within the aoe. (the encounter is supposed to be played without pause.

I would take a look at this page regarding target types for abilities. I didn't find anything as I briefly skimmed it, but you may find your answer in there. But to be clear, I don't personally know how you would accomplish that.

thanks. when i put 32 (target ground) in the targettype field in the ABI_base and then use display floaty message with ObjectToString(stEvent.oTarget) i get -1 as a result. my thinking is that if a target is returned when the ground is targeted i can get the location of that target and then use getobjectsinshape with the location i got. this doesn't work however..

There is nothing wrong having -1 on stEvent.oTarget if the spell can only be cast on ground. Tageted location is stored in stEvent.lTarget.
