Hey everybody,
In Mass Effect for PC (Steam download), I can't get past the
character creation part of the game without the game crashing while
loading the intro and giving me this error message:
"Runtime Error!
C++
Location: C:\\Program Files x86...
The application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way"
I transferred the game files (steamapps folder) from another computer, but as it starts fine and the graphics are working, I don't see how that would effect things.
PC Specs:
Intel i5 Quad-Core 750
Win7 x64
4GB RAM
ATI 5770 512MB (soon to be upgraded to the 1gb version)
500GB HDD
VIA Onboard Audio (7.1 channel, DTS) - latest drivers
Asus P7P55D-E Pro Mobo
Antec 900 II with cooling
The character creation works like a dream (60 fps, all graphics maxed), but it just crashes as soon as I hit "confirm"
I tried it with UAC off, all steam-related executables running as administrator, system restarts, etc...
Also,
ste:(am downloaded what I would assume to be the latest C++ runtime, and
I believe the game is patched to the latest version.
All other drivers (graphics, windows updates) are absolutely up-to-date, checked yesterday.
I'm at a loss here, any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks.

Sorry, I don't see anything in your report that is flashing any signals at me (nothing jumps off the page) regardiong your symptoms.
I will say that AFAIK, 512 MBs is all you can get any use from on a normal basis, from an HD 5770, because it only has a Mainline card's medium width memory bandwidth. In order to use more than 512 MBs, the video graphics adapter must have a 256 bit memory system, or more.
