ME2 isn't even in the same league as Mass Effect.

It is a hard choice, i think Mass Effect 1 wins it by an inch though

Mass Effect 2. Better controls. Better soundtrack. Better end scene.
When Shepard was escaping from Collector Base I had goosebumps, no game has given me goosebumps before, not even Mass Effect.
To be honest, I take that back, I like both games equally. Damn you nostalgia

ME1 by far, though overall I value both games equally. ME1 had a better main story, ME2 better gameplay mechanics.

As much as I think ME2 was the better game (I've been trying to replay ME1 lately and just can't get into it because of old gameplay style), ME1 definitely wins it with the ending. Battle scenes with fleets or armies always get me. ME2 ending was good, but it focused more on covertness than outright warfare like the battle for the citadel.

I also loved the space battle. Other things that made ME1's end much more epic were Shepard's unlikely survival, the unadulterated and rewarding praise given by the Counci, being able to get back at Udina by nominating Anderson, the epic speech by Anderson/Udina about humanity taking its place in the galaxy and finally the incredible soundtrack, including "M4, Part II" by Faunts. The feeling I usually get by finishing an ME1 playthrough and just watching the credits roll is something I can't describe in words.

Mass Effect 2. In a perfect world, Mass Effect 3 will bring back the suicide mission concept.

Look ME1 takes it as soon as you hear the Asari commander say "It's the Alliance!". After that it's either epic to super freaking epic.

Mass Effect 1 > Overlord > Mass Effect 2
All great endings, but ME1's ending is just the part of the game I can never stop playing!

ME1 - It jsut really felt like a menacing epic situation with the trench run up the elevator shaft towards the eerie Sovereign legs flailing around in the background, to the confrontation with Saren where you kill him the first time (although I like talking him into shooting himself), to the cinematic fleet battles that cut in at critical points during your personal action, I was more connected to it and invested in it than I was in the suicide run.

Mass Effect 1 by a long shot.

Though choice.
I say ME2, by a hair.
The "looking at the dead/squad you saved" part, and the approaching reaper fleet give ME2 the extra push (not to mention that the soundtrack through the whole thing is the best thing I have heard in years).

Me 2 I think. Both are equally good though.
The best ending in a Bioware game has to go to Jade Empire's evil ending or Kotor's evil ending. The twist in the middle of Kotor is awesome though.

ME2. But only if you count actual gameplay, if you look at cutscenes/dialogue alone ME1 wins (but not by much).

Awesome is an understatement. KotOR's twist was the best thing since "No. I am your father!"

The final boss in ME2 was impressive for its sheer scale, but it was also a bit cheesy. ME1 built up to a much more satisfying crescendo, visually and story-wise.
I have to go with ME1, which has one of the coolest endings in any game I have ever played.

Calling the terminreaper "cheesy" is an insult to cheese.

Cutscene-wise? Mass Effect 1.
Mass Effect 2's Overlord DLC has the best final boss (and the best Critical Mission Failure).

I liked both of them. But Mass Effect 1's ending was the most powerful for me. Granted, nostalgia may have made Mass Effect 2's ending less enjoyable - meaning that had I started with Mass Effect 2, I may have liked Mass Effect 2's ending better.

While I consider ME2 a vastly superior GAME, the ME1 ending was definitely more epic (and so was the single player story, although ME2's single player story made it feel MUCH more natural to go off and do side-quests, which I really appreciated). Keep in mind the definition of epic, though: epic doesn't simply mean good, it means:
1. noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style: Homer's Iliad is an epic poem.
2. resembling or suggesting such poetry: an epic novel on the founding of the country.
3. heroic; majestic; impressively great: the epic events of the war.
4. of unusually great size or extent: a crime wave of epic proportions.
So while ME1's ending was more epic, I actually might have liked ME2's ending better. The reason I might have liked ME2's ending better is because, nearer to the conclusion, I made some Renegade choices (I went against Tali's requests during her trial, didn't give Chakwas an escort, and saved the Collector base), and half my squad died, so this gave the ending a really gritty, sober, Dark Knight kind of feel to it, like Shepard realized that being a hero doesn't always mean being loved. It fit right in with the tone of the rest of the game.
