First off, I know "Search" is broken

To the latest round of arrivals.  Please don't waste forum space with the same antiquated old questions all over again UNTIL AFTER YOU SEARCH (see the end, below in that regard).  Please do not reply to years-old, dead message threads.  Once you have seen what has already been discussed, if you still have to know more, follow RaenImrahl' guide to reporting the nature, details, and specifications of your problem.  As he tells you, start your own personal message to ask questions in.  His sticky message is pinned on top in here and is new in May, 2011.

PLEASE, let's *NOT* keep on wasting so much time on long-solved matters.

Also, let's not keep on digging up long-dead threads with practically meaningless material in them now.  The forum's own search is horribly crippled.  That's the way it was designed, broken.  Just add a SITE: redirector to send either Google or Yahoo back to here (add site:social.bioware.com to the criteria).

The search on this forum is kind of crappy. But that's still no excuse to not use Google with site:social.bioware.com

Here's a freebie:

Oh Noes! My DLC not work does!!!!

That's why I used the modifier in the subject  title -- but any kind of search attempt is better than none at all!  Since first posting this, I've gradually moved all of my own searching to Google, using their site: redirection, so that I can get multi- word searches performed that way (the Site: modifier tells Google to look in these forums, or whatever URL you enter).

(And there were still more noobs doing the same thing again, when I initially replied to Metatheurgist.)

Not only does the current crop ignore the search, they seem worse than usual about ignoring the pinned posts! Geez!

Did people asking questions about PC trouble kill your cat or something? It's the troubleshooting forum, and generally faster responses occur is newer posts, eve if it's about a new problem.

Then also, theres the benefit that the question can be answered in a post or two, without having to sift through seven pages of discussion onthe off chance that you may find the answer to your question.

The Troubleshooting forums is like a PC held desk at Dell. The same questions will be asked, so deal with it.

Meh, I googled my problem and it sent me to wrong thread after thread. It wasn't until after I did some manual browsing before I found the issue had indeed been covered before.

If you happen to know what the title of the thread a poster is looking for or where it's located, it's better to just answer so that there's more references to it and more likely to show up in a google or site search.

Also remember that if you contact bioware support about an "in game issue" they'll likely try to defer you to this site, and it's not the customer's responsibility to sift through 20 pages of BS to find the solution to a problem that should be answered by bioware directly.

If you have such strong opinions on the matter don't click on the thread that says "ZOMG My DLC IS not teh work!".

It is summer, and forums such as this one are way down on readership.  many questions will simply never be answered at all because of that low number of vistors who might have usable suggestions.

On the other hand, there have been many past replies to the most commonly repeated questions, and some sort of search becomes a good investment of time.  Yes, the forum's own Search is a sickly, barely usable excuse for what it's supposed to be, but when Google will perform searches of secific forums for you, that becomes a good option.

Add to the low readership situation already described for summer, for being the weekend, and so few to read and answer things becomes worse, and Searching in some manner or another becomes the only practical way to use the forum!

Wake up out there, noobs! You are asking the same old questions, and not getting answers. You should start by reading the stickies and then use some sort of a Search instead of just crossing your fingers and hoping someone with an answer may wander through!

I have to agree with Gorath on this one. There is a great deal of valuable information on this forum. I don't think it is true that new posts are more likely to be responded to by the usual techies. Mainly because they are tired of answering the same question over and over and over...... again.

I know I don't.

I find the more times I type the same response to a question the answer becomes shorter and more cryptic each time. When it gets to the stage that I can't understand what I wrote, I figure it's a good time to stop reading those questions. Image IPB

A little bump.  Too many people don't know how to use the search function.

Too many don't even try using it.  As slow as the answers are coming, you'd thing that they would catch on, instead of bumping the same old questions they could have handled with a search hours ago!   (Although I do see odd misspellings, that would reduce their success rates if also used the same way to search with.)

Besides that shortcoming, quite a few are slow to include diagnostic information.

Including adequate information in a problem report, DA O:

Yeah, well, I've got a brand new problem, where (having not played for a few weeks) DA:O told me that I was logged off and the EA servers were unavailable. I tried searching to see if it might have had to do with the 1.04 patch, and all I got was this LEARN TO USE SEARCH N00B post Not very helpful.

Try using a site: redirection criteria with a primary search engine such as Google's, aiming back here. It's mentioned in this thread, had you scanned it all. I didn't include any tutorial for using Google, however.

There's still no change in the small number of experienced respondents in summer. For the same old repeated questions, the archives are still the fastest route to answers.

the search function would work, if there were answers. I search for problems, and I've found others post the same problem, and they get no answer. so I post it again.

If it's something that I will have answered when I was here, and I see several old archived threads that never concluded, I will see about making it more complete.  Graphics and video are my area of some expertise, and lengthy downloads are not practical with my connection, so I do not deal with digital game copies, nor with DLC.  Early this morning, I read all 35 of the message threads in Mass Effect 2 about the "stopped working" error messages from Windows.

I had made a mistake of thinking I remembered more about the subject than I did, and commented incorrectly based on that missed recollection.  I ended up adding a summary of the fixes that had been successful to the ten threads that never reached any conclusion.

Do not forget that you can re-direct the full-blown search engines, such as Google, back into here, and thereby have access to a far better method(s) of choosing search criteria.

I think you've got a lot more patience and obviously much more hard knowledge about computers than most people Gorath Alpha.

I just spent 2 long, frustrating days learning how to set up a limited account on XP that works properly after my system picked up a java virus somewhere. As usual, I reinstalled, but this time I had to explore networking and security, two concepts I've completely ignored for the most part.

I don't have much of a technical background, but if an old gamer can figure out things by using the Internet search engines I figure the noobs can do the same.

Nobody knows everything but if people are not willing to spend the time to learn to configure and use their machines and programs properly, I don't think they're worth any more of my time; I'm not going to be visiting this section of the forums anymore. It's not as if I personally had a lot to offer anyway beyond "do some research".

Thanks for making the effort to share your knowledge with the forumites even when they don't understand why you might sometimes come across a little gruffly.

You new people are still ignoring the SEARCH!   (No, folks, I know Werwulf isn't "new".)

The particular point, which some particularly hard headed types want to ignore, is that it's summer, and instead of any sizable number of members dropping in here with a lot of game experience, hardly any of them are around now, and repeating the same old thing all over again now is the SLOWER way to get an answer.

Right.  And look at the bad advice that has been added now (below)!  Really, forum answers just aren't readily available now!

WONDERFUL POST!  Most people are not dumb idiots, if they wished to use search instead of posting, they would.  So, in effect, the opening poster and his band-wagon people are the ONLY ones REALLY wasting any forum space!

The forum's own Search is very badly crippled.  It is the worst of its kind that I have ever seen, and there does not seem to be any anxiety over its pitiable condition.  But there are professional Search Engines that really work, there are message threads with answers in them, anf not only is it summer, it is a weekend, so posting a repeat of a same old question could end up taking DAYS for an answer, if there ever was one.

Readership is just way down, which some people refuse to acknowledge.

There are also pinned threads with answers being ignored, as well, and new questions without any PC hardware information included . .

The on-site Search has not been improved, however, none of the professional search engines have been taken offline, so there is no excuse for all of the current repeated instances of the same old questions all over again.

Even though summer has come to an end, the readership numbers in the two Social Forum's Tech Forums (for Bioware's games, at least) have not risen much at all.  We are getting relatively close to release excitement for the sequels to both, and interest in the older ones is falling off, not increasing.

No matter that it's fall, not summer, there still are better things to do on weekends than sit inside reading game forum traffic, so some kind of SEARCH becomes the fastest way to get help here.

If you still have to start a new topic because your search didn't turn anything up to help you, please include that datum when you complete your Problem Report message.
