My first play-through I chose to save Amaranthine, and am now going to save Vigil's Keep, but I wondered if it was possible to save both, like maybe saving the City and then going back to the Keep and  saving it? No matter which one I choose, I feel guilty about abandoning the other, and some of my npcs are mad no matter what I do. Is there a solution to this dilemma?

Nope you can only save 1. My choice is always the city, my Keeps strong enough to stand on her own.

As mentioned above, if you apply all the upgrades to the Keep it will stand strong on its own, so feel free to save the city without any guilt.

As for the NPCs reactions, you simply have to deal with it. If you have high persuasion you can convince them that whatever choice you decide is for the best, but you will always have someone complaining.

The keep, if fully upgraded, withstands the siege, lending to its legend of invincibility. The squaddies you leave behind will live or die in the epilogue depending on how well fortified the Keep is if you choose Amaranthine. If fully upgraded, they all live past it.

Ok, I think I've upgraded it as much as I can. Thanks for the info, I guess I'll save the city again.

Only done one playthrough I remember both hating and loving that choice when it came up. Hating it because I knew one would be lost (didn't know about the Keep being able to stand on it's own at that time), so I chose to save the Keep. That scene of Amaranthine getting destroyed nearly caused me to load an old save, first off I cheered at the darkspawn being killed, then I saw innoncents getting killed and I thought "oh crap..."

Great choice which goes to show there is no perfect way in war

My PC saved the city, but the battle at the keep is more exciting. The battle of Amaranthine is just meeh. Also, burning a city made of stone with just a few ballistas in a matter of seconds is just....unlikely. Unless you RP that you brought some of Dworkin's explosives and used them to burn the city.

That is exactly what I thought when I burned Amaranthine!

And I agree, the battle at Vigil's Keep is way more exciting and climatic. The battle in Amaranthine feels very insignificant and you have to wonder just how so few darkspawn could've created such chaos.

I just feel bad about the orphans, and Kristoff's wife, if I don't save Amaranthine, but I'd like the exciting battle at the Keep. What to do....? I hate dilemmas.

You might as well save the Keep once instead, just to see the differences in the story and play through a different kind of battle.

>> I hate dilemmas.<<

Ah, but that is what makes the game fun.  Unlike in DA:O you actually have to make some hard choices in Awakening that you can't weasel out of and there isn't always a happy ending option.

Not the mischievous "blight orphans"? Those aren't even real orphans! They certainly aren't in my thoughts when deciding whether to save Amaranthine or not.

I can't think of any other orphans mentioned in the game.

On my last playthrough, I took Justice and Velanna and decided to save Amaranthine - no one died n the epilogue slides and Velanna was the only one to disagree with my decision. But I did have all the companions in the 80-100 range. Also did all the upgrades.

The battle at the Keep is so much more fun, even better than the final battle at Denerim, I think, but I hate seeing poor Varel die. I'm not sure if there's any way to prevent that. (I really just like setting off bombs in the middle of a mob and watching everyone die.)

On my first playtrough i saved the city (it's the thing wardens should do, in my opinion[i remembered Wynne's speech on how the warden have to sacrifice themselves, damn you granny]). I was devastated when the codex (falsely) stated the Keep had fallen and my other companions were dead. The epilogue eased my mind.

In my run to get all achievements i then had to save the Keep. I felt really bad. Upgrading the Keep and then anbandoning the city is just an epic fail. But i have to admit, the battle was better. Still not going to rescue the Keep again.

Saving Amaranthine may lead to this "happy ending," but to be honest, i think it's more pragmatic to defend the Vigil.

Just finished Awakening on one playthrough, I saved Amaranthine but the battles were just too bland, since I tend to make my characters 'badass', the second playthrough I'll save the Keep and leave Amaranthine to burn.

Plus Rendon Howe was a bastard, and just killing him didn't give me enough satisfaction... on the light side, Nathaniel is awesome and he prefers to go to the Keep rather than save Amaranthine, so yeah

I saved Amaranthine because I thought the keep would hold due to all the upgrades... But it didn't and half my team died. Can anyone list all the upgrades that must be made because I was certain I didn't miss any? Unless it depends on where you send the soldiers.

Wade will upgrade the soldier's armor

The dwarf will fortify the walls

The other dwarf will make a supply of bombs

I'm not sure if it makes any difference, but I always have the soldiers guard the farms...

Hey, do you run afoul of the bug where you cannot win the second Persuade to quell the peasant revolt?  If not, do you have Ser Temmerly The Ox during court, or the deserter?  Did you do the farm bushwack on the conspirators on info from the Dark Wolf (or whatever he's called) before or after the court session?

I did have that bug on my first game, but I went back and avoided the riot, which had a bad ending in the epilogue since the peasants thought they could walk all over me and the second revolt led to some deaths. This time through I sided with Garavel and had him put down the riot the first time. On both games I had them hold Temmery in prison until we could collect more evidence.

Both times I paid the Dark Wolf to find info right after you learn of the conspiracy from Ser Tamara. The first time I went to the farm and dealt with the conspiritors right away. The second time I was too slow getting there, and right after the peasant revolt, I had the Crows and that Bann Esmereld lady (and a few other nobles) try to assassinate me inside the Keep. I later went to the farm and killed some other nobles. (I know I killed Ser Timothy twice, but I'm not sure about any others.)

I'm not sure which deserter you're referring to. I've only had to deal with Temmery and Alec - the guy who stole grain to try and feed his family.

I'll have to not use the Dark Wolf and see how that goes.

I didn't use Dark Wolf, or go to the farm to put down the conspiracy, and as a result I had the conspirators attack me in the keep. I just killed them and that was that.
