Problem loading after nearly halfway through the game

Okay so here's the problem: after halfway through the game (done all the loyalty missions for the first list and was about to snag my first member of the second lsit), my game will no longer load. I've been having recurring issues where the sound will bug out and, after a freeze and a little green LOADING, it'll go back to normal. Sometimes if it really hates me it'll BSOD. But now I can't even play because when I click resume game, the game shuts down immediately and says "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working".

After many hours of scouring the internet and these forums for some kind of help, I'm at an impasse. I don't want to uninstall/reinstall because I assume I'll lose my game saves. But there doesn't seem to be any way to fix this. My video and audio drivers are fully up to date and so is the game.

Note: I played the game through with zero problems back when it first came out, but now I'm playing through it again for renegade and it just doesn't want to cooperate.

Here are my specs:

OS: Vista 32 bit
Processor: AMD Phenom 9650 Quad core
Video card: GeForce GTX 260
RAM: 4 Gigs

Please help me get my game back to how it was when I played it through the first time!

You won't. Just to be sure make a backup of your BioWare folder that contains the saved files. I think a reinstall will probably fix this.

That BSOD sounds really unhealthy though and I can't imagine it's caused by Mass Effect 2. When you get the BSOD again, post the error code. If it has something to do with video drivers then removing and reinstalling the video drivers might fix that. Just make sure you don't have the latest Nvidia drivers installed because they don't really get along with Mass Effect 2.

How might I go making a backup of my files? I'm not sure which folder or file would do the job.

EDIT: Found the saves, uninstalled and reinstalled. Still can't play it. Clicked Resume Game, and it crashed to desktop with the same "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working". Great.
