Greetings to all. I posted this question in another forum and I was redirected to the toolset forum. I figured this specific forum would be the best place to post.

I'd like to know if it's possible to port hairstyles between races, and if so, how? I'd like to port some human male hair and beards (more specifically the side-burns "beard") to the Qunari race, as one of my characters is Qunari. Again, I ask, is this possible?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Regards,
~Xyraphius

I would say definately possible yes, but I would think it would require import and export tools to reposition/shape it to match qunari face (which is higher than human i think). For that I'd recommend eshme's import/export tools, which requires 3ds max or GMax.

Do you have access to, and experience of these? If not, theres not much point me guiding you further. let me know, and I'll see if i can help.

I have both the program and the tools, but I don't have experience with either... As for guiding me, if that proves to be a difficult task, could you direct me towards a tutorial?

I recently posted something similar here.

I hope you can use this to answer your question too. In your case, ignore most of the material stuff, you need to pull out the mmh and rename it so its usable by qunari (qm_brd). If its in the wrong position, then pull out the model and make the modification using eshmes import/export.

Alright, I read through your post... I've gotten to editing the file in the toolset. The default name for the file is dm_har_ogra_0.mmh... Do I change the file name to qm_brd_ogra_0.mmh?

I'm also getting a little mixed up on the steps afterward. As a result, what do I change the pn_ file name to in the toolset, pn_brd_ogra?

sorry for any confusion i may have caused... to be honesy, without seeing the result, I am unsure of the steps you will need to take after renaming the mmh... but basically you should do the following and maybe post a screenshot of where it got you... using the guide from before...
  • find the model name for your beard
  • pull the mmh *only* (for now) out of your modelheirarchies.erf
  • rename it
  • open it in the toolset and rename ONLY the MMH_NAME (or whatever the unique field is... and NOT the MSH name... leave that as it is) - as you say, you need to use "qm_" prefix
  • save your new mmh.
  • dump it in your override
  • restart your toolset
  • create a qunari head morph and you hsould be able to select your beard.
Once you've done that, I'm kind of expecting it to show up in the wrong place... but let me know your result so I can advise you best. If it's in the wrong place, you'll likely have to grab the MSH, and bring it into a modelling package to move it around.

Well, seeing how adversely beards affect your face in the toolset with no real workaround (especially since Qunari can't be created in the Character Creator) I'm not too concerned about beards, but I could (in theory) do this same exact thing with hair?

Edit: Wow, I just realized that _brd is the extension for beards, I was wondering why it wasn't using _har, and also probably why you thought I was interested in beards... I'm sorry, I can't believe it took me that long to notice.

I thought you were interested in beards because:

and yes, the process is identical. You can expect the scalp might need moving about though to fit qunari since i *think* theyre larger heads, but i havent really looked into it. Qunari could indeed do with a few hair ports.

Well, I would like to do beards too, but thinking about it, without a workaround it wouldn't work out too well. As for hair ports, I'm definitely sick of having the "shepard" hairstyle on my Qunari, and I certainly don't like having to choose between that or Sten's.

It did end up showing up in the wrong place. It's hovering under the morph head.

okay, so youll need to grab the msh from modelmeshdata.erf, use eshmes import/export to modify its position in 3ds max and sort it that way. Youll need to rename it so it doesnt overwrite the original hair, and modify your mmh that you should have set up so that it uses your renamed msh.
