So, I broke down and bought ME2 on steam and the install went well. Started to game, put in the Cerberus code, all went well.
Then I went to my profile page, begain to download the various free DLC I have. When one of them finished, I double clicked to install and got a message saying that ME2 was not installed.
"Strange" I thought. So I did a search on the forums, found what seemed to be the sollution (set the Steam.exe, ME2 launcher and ME2.exe as run as admin) and tried again.
Same message.
"Maybe I have to run the game with the new setting?" So I launch the game, all seems to be fine. I even try and install the DLC while the game is running, and it seems that the DLC launcher detects the game because it reports that ME2 resorces are in use.
Seeing that, I exit ME2 and go back to try the DLC again.... only to get the same "Mass Effect 2 is not insatalled" message.
To say I am getting frustrated is to put it mildly at this point.
Any idea as to why this is happening and how to fix it?

Is the DLC on the same drive as your ME2 folder?

everything is on the C: drive.

In that case, that's quite odd. The DLC installed fine for me on XP as it auto-detected it straight away.

I'm on Windows 7 and steam (and thus all ME2 files) is in the Program Files (x86) folder.
Perhaps that has something to do with it?
BTW, this is extra frustrating as I also have the steam version of Dragon Age and got all my DLC on that on installed just fine.

Dragon Age DLC installs differently, though. That installs in-game, not via .exe files.
Just had an idea. Have you tried running any of the DLC packs from the Steam folder at all? Perhaps by locating the ME2 sub-folder (Program Files > Steam > steamapps > common > mass effect 2), pasting it there and executing it? Might be worth trying with the smallest one to see if it works.

Didn't work sadly.
The part that is driving me completely batty is that the DLC does detect when ME2 is running, but seems unable to find the damn thing when its not.

Just installed a DLC piece after newest patch to see if something have changed but, everything works fine. Didn't have a problem with day release and not now.
Windows 7 64 bit. Steam and game not on Drive C. It detects it automatically. However, after finishing installing, it does ask me if i would like to reinstall but i chose that it was installed correctly.

Strange, i'm using the steam version with windows 7 64-bit and i don't have any problem at all. And then I have even moved my whole steam folder from one hard drive to another with just cut and paste. And still all DLC's for both ME and DA:O is installing just fine

Same problem as well. I even placed the file in the folder that houses the game and yet it still tells me that it isn't installed. What do I do?
EDIT: The problem fixed itself, I saved about 5 times and the game was recognized in the downloader for DLC.

I'm having the same problem too. I can't install the Cerberus package into my steam Mass Effect 2 install. I wish Steam would support the DLC more directly.
Update: Right clicking and run as administrator from the actual Mass Effect 2 EXE file worked.. Problem Solved.

This is going to sound really stupid but how do you even know if the dlc is working? Downloaded Normandy crash site and currently waiting on Shadow Broker but ahve no idea if the install was successful :s
Is the dlc accessible in the game - like DA:O there was a man in the party camp offering you the mission- or do you start it separately?

okay...the problem seems to lie in the menu: when I click on New Content Available, it immediately opens my web browser to Bioware's site which informs me that I don't have enough points to purchase the Overlord pack. Okay. WTH?
