A strategy I have heard of, but not yet tried, is to send a stealth rogue up ahead of the party after setting a bunch of traps. Throw a poison flask or the like, and watch as the NPCs somehow assume it came from the rest of the party and blunder headlong into all your traps.
does anyone acctually use stealth

Stealth is a must , it allows you to skip and bypass Huge chunks of areas , like the temple when going for the ashes , and further if you trigger a cutscene the game it self will warp you part you even if there way at the begining.

Why would you want to bypass huge chunks of areas?

er kind of ... I play DAO a whole lot example from the last time before the lastest DLC had 22 differnt wardens , with 7 a min. of 7 different endings ; so yea that is a grand total of 154 different saves.
and this not counting DAO:Awakening ........
Anders for the win !!!
every time i get a new DLC i wipe out all my Saves and start all over again.
So yea i tend to skip past most of the temple and the deep roads...

A rogue without stealth!?....Unthinkable! Lots of flexibility as people already have pointed out.

Stealth is the best tool in a Rogue's arsenal. It makes melee attacks backstabs and ranged attacks critical hits.
It can be used to plant traps and to throw bombs (although that is really a cheesy tack).
Last but not least it's a great way to lower the threat level your Rogue has generated.

If your rogue is taking punishment and taunt wont get them off. Stealth will drop agro, like a brick trying to fly.
Then when your rogue attacks again from stealth they can backstab again. You can set traps and disarm them before you charge in. This can turn a battle from a difficult encounter to an easy one.
I like to get my rogue in close to a enemy mage then when the rest charge in have them backstab, below the belt then let rip with riposte and flurry with magebane poison.

Stealth makes the game funnier, I use a lot scouting the areas ahead, seeing what awaits my party. Of course, when I can see the enemies, because some are hidden (damn children). Rogue in DA is a amazing class. Dont be afraid to try it.

Short answer, yes, I use it all the time. Seems, pointless to play a rogue if you don't use stealth. The only thing I don't like on the stealth is combining it with stealing. Once you do a successful steal, then your pc is fully seen, seems you should stay hidden until the talent fully resets, which it doesn't do for me. Could be my system. I don't know.

If you have a lot of gold from potent lyrium selling you can buy a LOT of bombs. That means that if a fight is too hard you can sort of 'lower the difficulty' by bombing them from stealth for a bit to lower the difficulty. I did that a few times when I was frustrated. The nice thing is that friendly fire doesn't happen and you can do damage from stealth.

what i like to do with my rogue is scout ahead of the party and clear traps. you can do it right in front of the bad guys if stealth is high enough. saves a lot of damage to the party especialy with fire traps ect. traps are nasty if you try to clear em under attack, mutch better to do so stealthed.

I enjoy watching a character Lvl Up from the Rogue disarming traps and unlocking containers. To be able to do so in an area full of enemies is frosting on the cake.

Grief! What a strange question? It is a brilliant Talent. My main character was a Rogue and I frequently teamed up with Zevran. The two of us created hell on earth using Stealth Level 4. In the finale, my character mapped out out the Denerim prison, dismantled all the enemy traps, set our own traps, threw bombs and backstabbed the bosses. The darkspawn never had a chance. It was hugely entertaining

Man I gotta learn how to create some good tactical macros, cause the default ones are fairly lame. It seems like they ignore my orders instead of having their tactics overridden by them. I mean, when i specifically want the to move to location A, they start running in a completely different direction and ignore traps and whatnot. It's complete and utter mayhem.

Careful which instructions have been given. 'Nearest' commands tends to mean just that, and Defensive mode will halt actions far afield of the controlled character.

It seems companions have a homing instinct that can kick in if they are not actively fighting and they are a long way away from the pc, even if behaviour is set to aggressive. I just had a combat where Alistair dropped the assassin he was fighting and decided to ignore the one nearby to instead run all the way across the area back to me. Meanwhile, I dropped the guy I was fighting and ran to the assassin Alistair ignored, who was the last one. So I'm running one way and here comes Alistair running the other way - and he kept going. I was curious as to just what the AI was up to so I let him go. He ran all the way back to where I had been fighting before figuring out that he should go after the remaining assassin instead.Fricke wrote...

Really depends on your playing style, but if you can go stealth in battle remember:
Every hit from stealth is a crit, this meaning you can insta shatter iced/petrified enemy or make uber alpha strike.
If you halt the rest of your party, you can enter a room, place a trap in front of every enemy, go back, regroup and attack!
Using cheats i have a mage that can use stealth, and was very funny but overpowered (casting mass paralisis from stealth you become visible only AFTER the spell have hit, not while you are casting...)
So basically going stealthy is one possible way to beat the game, but it's not neccessary.

When you strike from stealth you always crit regardless of your position and you NEVER backstab technically speaking. In fact backstabbing and critting are counted as two different actions from the engine.
This means that if you attack from stealth it's a crit and all the passive abilities of the assassin DOES NOT trigger for example.
Of course if you attack an enemy from behind while cloacked the first attack is a crit and the second a backstab, but the opposite order would be better.
So a more performat tactic would be:
make the tank have aggro
position youself in the back of you enemy
make a backstab
stun the target or cloak yourself
make a crit
for assassin spec this is the best secuence of attack damagewise becouse the second crit takes advantage of the bleeding wound you made from the first backstab.
