I'm sorry, but Bioware dropped the ball with the Quarian race.

Well, I can't imagine how you would know any of the other characters then since Tali is as fleshed out if not more than all the other crew members.
Anyway, I'll agree that having a different quarian would have been nice and Tali could have been given a good cameo, but it's not like it didn't make sense. I did have a good laugh when I first learned that Garrus and Tali were romance options; that was a complete fanservice if anything.

Why does fanservice have to be a bad word? We are fans, don't we want the company listening to our hopes for the game? If you like something and clamor for it to be included in the next installment, isn't it a good thing when they listen? What I'm hearing is, "give us what we want, but don't give other people what they want!"

There could be a thousand pages of pure support for the game to end with Shepard playing house and having a billion little rugrats with his or her respective love interest, but that still wouldn't mean it would be a good idea.

It has to be done well, if it is done at all.

Han Solo and Princess Leia hooking up was a bit of fan service considering she was clearly set up as Luke's girl in ANH.

So yes, you're absolutely right - there is nothing wrong with fan service when its done well.

I disagree.  Tali doesn't really change between ME1 and ME2 despite her major change in circumstances and status.  We also don't learn much more about her in ME2 than we knew in ME1; the difference is we just get to go see what she's been talking about all this time.  I really felt like I got to know Kaidan and Ashley in ME1 best out of all the characters between both games.  They opened up, they talked about where they'd come from, what they'd done, etc.  Garrus changes a lot in ME2 (and plotwise it makes sense), but aside from what happened to him on Omega, it's like Tali:  he doesn't give us a whole lot of new information.  Frankly?  I learned more about Thane in ME2 than anybody else because he has a tremendous amount of non-romance dialogue compared to the other characters.

Again, I want to like Tali because she's a nice character, but even though I took her with me through the entirety of ME1, I never got that "sister" vibe a lot of other female players talk about.  I adored her in my first ME1 playthrough, but I think the charm wore off because in the second playthrough all she still wanted to talk about was the Flotilla.  I did like being able to give her a hug in ME2, and frankly I like the fact that she's romanceable.  Guys seem to love her and she's not the kind of blatant fanservice that Miranda is--so I think that says some good things for the majority of male Tali fans.  I'm about to start another playthrough of ME2, so she may stand out more in that playthrough.  Either way, I think given her new position in the Flotilla, she ought to be presented as less of a damsel in distress in her recruitment and loyalty missions, and she should have been counted among the effective choices for fire team leader.  What's the point of adding that status to her story as a writer if you're going to ignore it or brush it aside later in the game?

We got a few butt-shots of Jacob too, don't forget. I think Miranda and Jacob were BioWare's naive idea that fans of this genre might actually be attracted to human characters. ;)

There are seriously Jacob butt-shots? Ha, I never noticed...

Seriously, the female Shepard romances creep me out far more than Tali. And yes, while she's a fan service character and a walking quarian encyclopedia, I think she was well developed in Mass Effect 2. Especially her loyalty mission. Plus, her romance made at least some sense, psychologically (and I use gas masks strictly for paintball and darts). ;)

Hardly any of the characters get any real character development throughout Mass Effect or Mass Effect 2 (except Wrex, Shepard, and possibly Grunt and Mordin) hell, Garrus can potentially lose any character development he got in Mass Effect!

Booty is more important than character development.

I wouldn't mind Tali that much if it weren't for Freedom's Progress.

Really? Second mission in, on a random human colony, probably middle of nowhere, quarian squad is somehow there and Tali is among them?

There is fanservice and then there is fanservice that is so obvious it stops making sense.

Siansonea II wrote...
For my part, every time I saw Tali in ME2 I just kept thinking 'FANSERVICE'. And fan service to a particularly gross subset of ME fans. That faceless girl is objectified in ways that I've never seen, and it grosses me the hell out.

It's funny, in ME1 I didn't mind Tali, I thought she was okay, it was Ashley I didn't like when I first started playing the game. It's weird how the way others have latched onto Tali as some sort of masturbatory sex object has killed her charm for me. Now I despise Tali and her carefully focus-grouped damsel-in-distress/plucky heroine/gas mask sex doll persona.

And this. Some of Tali fan art is so sick that after months it still lingers in my mind.

Fan art... ugh... browsing through Mass Effect fan art galleries to find some good (or fun) paintings and potential wallpapers, and I've seen such horrors. But nothing beats Garrus/Grunt fan girl art. Well, maybe nothing except that Tali doll... which I can't forget, no matter how hard I try.

The horror...

And the same goes for Liara/Garrus/Wrex.

What's your point?

In fact there is by far more Liara nasty-ness (roughly double) out there than Tali.

I agree with the two above posters. I've seen Garrus/Grunt pictures that.... still haunt me to this day. I think the real reason is you hate Tali and are trying to blame others.

This. I've seen way more horrifying fanart involving Garrus than I have of Tali. Hell, there are more creepy fanfics involving Shepard and Garrus on fanfiction.net than any other character.

I take it the above posters have seen the Garrus, Grunt, and Urz one? *barfs*

edit: Finding good fanart is like finding a literal diamond.

I think why it is like that is the Tali fandom is big here but the rest of the internet and it's fangirls are a bit more crazy:wizard:.

That wasn't a Tali doll. Somebody used some internet feature to reverse link the picture to its source and it had nothing to do with Mass Effect/Tali/whatever in the slightest.

So somebody found said doll and decided to present it as such.

My point is that Liara/Garrus/Wrex are better written into the story while Tali is here only to fulfill sexual fantasies.

Eh?

Not sure what you're getting at OP. To me it seems pretty obvious Tali was always meant to be in ME2, probably namely so you could actually meet the Quarian people. I don't see Tali joining Shepard as all that odd, it's not like Tali had to join you in ME1 either. Tali joins Shepard under the premise of being "old friends" basically just like Garrus.

As for the Talifans yes some of them are bit out there. But all character Fanboys creep me out regardless. I mean I have me favorite ME characters, but I don't religously worship them in some thread jeez. Can't say what the deal is with all the Tali-Porno that's out there. I'd venture Tali just  happens to fit the bill for 4Chaners and Anime Kiddies like to ****** to. Makes sense though I guess as Tali is a cute, young, innocent girl. What pedophile wouldn't want that?

It annoys me as well since I prefer Tali's romance with Male Shepard over the likes of Miranda, Jack, and Kelly. But if I do ever choose Tali I now feel like some kind of pervert.

That said the Mass Effect Cartoon Porno goes way beyond just Tali. Trust me do any kind of google image search (even with safesearch on) about Mass Effect and you'll eventually come across some pretty effed up stuff. Ir's kind of disturbing since I've never encountered that with any other game. But I guess all you need is a few hopeless nerds with a lusting for certain characters to actually go out of their way and draw sexually explicit stuff.

Tali's fanbase here isn't as big as it looks anyway. Sure she is very popular, but I only see the same 20 or so people posting in her support thread, and most of that is mostly spam.

If anyone was made for sexual fanservice, it was clearly Grunt.

The name alone gives it away.

Maybe that's why BioWare pulled down the fan art section of the site? There were some really nice pieces (luckily I've saved them to my hard drive), but to think all the freaky stuff they have to go through to pick up good paintings... maybe they've had enough.
