If the TARDIS can hold 108 people then I am in.

But it didn't look that spacey.

I few people have mentioned that they prefer the SR-1 over the SR-2. What elements of the SR-1 did you like better than the SR-2, and what elements of the SR-2 did you like better than the SR-1? There's no need to mention Cerberus logos. There seems to be a concensus on that subject :)

I remember reading somewhere that SR2 was originally designed to be an ugly copy of SR1. I can see that, with SR2 I felt like I was walking around a poorly lit factory or laboratory instead of a sleek state-of-the-art warship. It could use a paintjob to get rid of that stainless steel look.

Side note: It would be nice to see more personalization of space done by the crew members. Zaeed did that quite well, Kasumi a bit too much so.

SR-1:
Ambient music.
Working airlock. And if you looked out of the "windows" when docked, you saw the dock outside.
Henchmen armor lockers.
Mako, of course.

SR-2:
The sound system that played music from ME1.

1. Dark Blue interior instead of the lifeless grey in the SR-2,.

2. Music on the ship.

3. The SR-1's design looked cooler than the SR-2's.

4. Being able to get on the ship without it leaving the space station or planet and the decontamination sequence instead of the loading screens.

That theme needs to be back in ME 3, was one of the better arrangements in ME 1.

SR-1 color/lighting scheme was better, in my opinion. SR-2 layout was nicer, though one thing that always bothered me was the elevator - not the load screen per se, but the fore-aft orientation. The door faces forward on Deck 2, yet inexplicably turns around on Deck 3 to face aft. On Deck 4, it faces forward again. It made sense on the SR-1 when the elevator opened both ways, but it's a glaring error on the SR-2.

I like the size and added detail to the SR-2, but one thing the SR-1 had better was the drive core. It looked badass whereas the SR-2's is... well, it's a giant disco ball.

I miss being able to walk in and out of the Normandy when it was still docked somewhere like the Citadel. Using the airlock just added a sense of realism to the game.

Finally, the captain's cabin rocks. That was quite possibly the best addition to ME-2, especially the option to call your LI up. I'd say, start with that in ME-3... gives you something to look forward to between missions. :D

I pretty much like everything about the SR-2 better than the SR-1, except for the general color of the ship; I prefer dark blue to white when it comes to futuristic starships, but that's just my opinion. More importantly, the music on the SR-1 in ME1 -- as simple as that may sound, it actually made the ship feel more alive to me. I was kind of disappointed to see that there was no onboard-ship background music in ME2. Another honorable mention would be the airlocks and "decontamination in progress". SR-2 had an airlock (obviously), but it was "just there".

Regardless, the SR-2 is definitely a much better ship than the original Normandy. Image IPBImage IPBImage IPBImage IPB

I agree with this sentiment.  I really liked the old Normandy's color scheme better.  As well as the Alliance outfits.  The black and gray seemed simple, relaxed, but professional.  If that makes any sense.

I massively preferred the SR-2 over the SR-1. Here's why:
1. Color- The SR-1 was dominated by blue and there wasn't a lot of lighting, so a lot of detail in the design got lost in the darkness. It wasn't as bad as the Destiny's interior from SGU, but practically every part of the ship felt kind of bland. On the SR-2, we've got silver/light grey as the primary color of the interior and it looks and feels more alive, because you can actually see all the detail put into the interior.
2. Galaxy Map- The new Galaxy Map actually tells you what missions are available, unlike the old one, where you had to exit to check your journal. Also, the new map doesn't have the blue cursor and blue rings the old one had, which made finding planets or systems in certain nebulae a pain in the ass. Plus the fact that the SR-2's map turns into a hologram showing off your ship upgrades is cool.
3. Exterior- The SR-2 exterior looks a lot better than the SR-1. The old Normandy looked a bit ridiculous with those dinky little swing wings and the giant tail fin, while the SR-2 looks more solid and more capable in a fight.
4. More Everything- The SR-2 has more stuff to it than the SR-1. More rooms with stuff you can manipulate, more squadmates to talk to, more crew, and more vehicles. As a result, there's more incentive to explore it and gain a sense of ownership, that it truely is your ship. With the SR-1, I never got that feeling and felt that the ship was really just a taxi between point A and point B.
5. Customization- Giving us the ability to customize the ship, the captain's loft, and consolidating a lot of the inventory into different parts of the ship helped make the ship more important to the player. In ME1, giving the player access to the inventory on the fly really hurt the SR-1 in terms of usefulness in the game, while in ME2, the SR-2 having the player's primary inventory access made the ship more of a base of operations, while the ship and cabin customization really helped us get emotionally invested in the ship.
6. The Hangar- Kudos to whoever decided to go with a bigger hanger with no one in it. In ME1, I found the notion that four people would casually hang around a compartment where the only thing between them and vaccuum was a single ramp ridiculous. Plus the thought of loosing Garrus and Wrex because someone failing to properly secure the ramp enraging.

I agree with this 100%.

Just throwing this out there, I like how you are able to upgrade the SR-2 with shield, weapons, and hull plating. Perhaps in this can be taken to another level such as different upgrade routes:

An extremely sleek looking SR-2 that focuses on stealth systems and speed

An SR-2 with thick hull plating and many weapon emplacements

An SR-2 that looks balanced.

Of course, my suggestions will only matter if we can actually use these upgrades instead of seeing them play out in a cutscene *hint please add space combat hint*.

As for the SR1 vs SR2 debate:

Really, the SR1 looks ugly, old and outdated compared to the SR2. kregano has said it all so there's no need to repeat it. Playing ME1 after ME2 really brings this home. And I very much prefer the lighter color scheme of the SR2.

Improvements to be made:

(1) Give us access to more areas. Even if there's nothing to be done in the cargo hold or the hangar, it's a part of the ship and should be accessible. I can't say how much I hate this part of ME2's design philosophy - making only gameplay-relevant areas accessible, and only as long as they're gameplay-relevant. That almost destroyed the whole game for me. See this old post for details.

(2) A functional airlock, and the ability to stay docked while on the ship. Ties in to the same design flaw (as far as I'm concerned, it is one) mentioned above. I want the SR2 in ME3, but I also want ME1's seamless world back.

I guess because SR-1 felt more personal to me. It was smaller, it felt like a military ship. The SR-2 seems quite capable, but it's too open and bright. There's too much wasted space, and the fact that every squad member can happily just setup shop in a previous sealed-off section of the ship makes it feel more like a liner with cabins to me. You have these big areas of the SR-2 that we can't use for anything, like the cargo bay - would be nice if we actually had a reason to go down there once in awhile.

And the stealth system was really downplayed with the SR-2: When the game opened I wasn't even sure SR-2 even had stealth systems, then Legion eventually tells us that it does, but we then don't seem to use them at all in the game asides from that. There's some individuality lost there.

And I'd like to see a return to the airlock design in ME1, so I don't have to undock/redock whenever I have to change out a newly purchased armor piece.

Aside from the Cerebus logo, I guess the color scheme, I don't think yellow looks all that bad ass on a military vessell ( yes I know the SR-2 isn't exactly a military vessell ). Otherwise I think the SR-2 is supperior to the SR-1 in every way.

I liked the moving mass effect drive thingamajings on the SR-1. It just looked cooler in animations when those locked into place before it accelerated into FTL. Compared to that, the four big rectangles attached to what is basically regular triangular wings on the SR-2 seem like a design shortcut. But then the SR-1 has an ugly fin. It's kind of a tie for me.

When I saw the Normandy SR-2 for the first time I did not like it. Because smaller Normandy's internal design was more similar to a submarine and that tight pack dark design seemed more realistic. Normandy SR2's layout is not consistent as much as SR1. For instance port side and starboard cargo holds' and observation rooms' walls are different -windows, shape and thickness.

But now I like SR2 more because it is well lit and more roomy. I just don't see why Cerberus made it like a luxury liner. SR1 was more original because it did not try to imitate USS Enterprise -a Cadillac in space. Normady SR1 was a true frigate. SR2 was just expanded by designers to provide a bad ass starship to teenagers. Maybe I am not the main demographic since I am 35 years old but I like more realistic designs. Despite that SR2 is still more roomy and that is good. I hope they will keep her at next episode.

What I dislike most is the new Mass Effect core. No moving parts. Just a big vibrating cauldron. No immagination. I do not like designs which are too fancy. I don't like designs defying sound engireening with stupid protrusions but SR 2's core is really unimmaginative. Why not the eye of a Mass Relay as the drive core? Fusion plant should be a closed space of course.

That said for consistency reasons I would like to see SR2 in Mass Effect 3. Ships are not underpants. Shepard should not change ship at every episode. Unless they design a better ship and if the story dictates it lol :D!

I agree with this, the only real thing that I miss on the SR-1 is the airlock transfer between Ship and where landed when the ship could actually 'dock'. One thing that always seems silly in ME2 is how when you go to the ship after being at a station/planet it shows the 'exit station/planet' cut-scene even though we don't actually go anywhere until we plot a new location to go to. So if you just went in to check some stuff out on the Normandy but then went back to the same planet/station it then goes through the whole scenario of showing the 'enter planet/station' cut-scene. Pointless... why not just have it so it was like on ME where when after you've had the 'enter planet/station' it has player in control of Shepard who goes to the airlock then do the whole loading bit from there. Similar on exit from planet/station get to airlock, load up the Normandy, go to the Galaxy Map and it is only when you go to leave the system or go to another planet/station that it fires up the 'exit planet/station' scene followed by the other scene (akin to how it was in ME).

Some people have mentioned the lockers for party members. Personally am ok with the 'weapon loadout' box which we can use for all party members, though maybe if party members in ME3 can have their own armor/weapon upgrades then maybe their 'quarters/station' can have an individual loadout box that allows you to fiddle with their specific setup. I still think the Weapon loadout is better though as you are equipping your TEAM and as everyone knows there is no I in TEAM (although I am aware there is ME ;) )

Hangar should be visitable, although I am going to imagine this might happen anyway what with possible returning squadmates.

Whilst for a fair few of my Sheps I would like to see the Cerberus stuff removed, I do have some Sheps that are still fairly (or completely) loyal to Cerberus so I hope there is an option to keep the Cerberus stuff there. I know am probably in a minority there but... choices should matter

Aesthetically, I hate, hate, hate the SR-2! Everything about it bugs me, especially its size, shape, colors, and Tantalus drive core.

I really miss the SR-1's moving thrusters. They were really cool compared to the SR-2's pedestrian fixed thrusters. I hate how short and stubby the SR-2's thrusters are, too, and I hate the boring wings they're attached to.

Another SR-1 feature I miss is the original Tantalus drive core. Beholding the core was a mesmerizing experience. The way the walls spun as pure energy surged through them toward the robotic arms cradling the precious, beautiful eezo was awe-inspiring. Imagine my disappointment when I saw the SR-2's Tantalus drive core was a boring metal sphere. It was as if Cerberus had imprisoned the glory of a blue sun, its splendor and majesty never to be enjoyed again.

I don't like how big the SR-2 is. It can't land on most planets now, it can't squeeze through and into tight spaces anymore, it's easier to spot visually, and it's a bigger target. What good is that?! Besides that, it just looks oversized to me.

The SR-2's colors rub me the wrong way, too. Externally, I loved the black, white, and red of the SR-1. The SR-2's black, white, and amber or orange or whatever it is seriously puts me off for some reason. There's just something irritatingly different to me about the SR-2's black and white compared to the SR-1's.

The SR-2's interior colors irritate me even more. I loved the dark blue interior of the SR-1. The dark blue was the perfect complement for space travel, and it contrasted very nicely with the amber computer holograms. But something about the SR-2's white and light grey, its comparative brightness, bugs me like hell. I felt at home in the SR-1. I feel out of place and very uneasy in the SR-2. For me, it is like the difference between being in my mother's womb and being dumped in a daycare center.

The SR-2's overall shape is just boring to me. The SR-1 looked like 'a greyhound in the slips, straining upon the start.' The SR-2 is just another BORING airplane IN SPACE. I'll take the SR-1 over the SR-2 any day.

Moving parts? The SR1 mass effect core had moving parts? I never noticed....why, btw, should it? I can see no reason for it.

As for the argument that the SR1 was more realistic: Mass Effect spaceships are not submarines. There are also no energy constraints to speak of for the "small comfort" components - in the light of the energy used up by the propulsion systems everything else pales into insignificance. So there's really no need for a spaceship to be all dark and gloomy. Why not have comfort if you can afford it? This military asceticism promoted by some people is something I don't like, I'm glad it's mostly gone in ME2. That you're a commando who can survive in unpleasant enviroments with scarce resources doesn't mean you have to make your home (the SR2 is your home in ME2) look like such an environment.

I like my SR2 and would hate to lose it.

The SR-1 had:
-A med bay were you could restock on med packs.

-Fully explorable with access to every deck and room right after Eden Prime.

-Equipment lockers for your squad mates to change out their gear. Yes with ME2 total lack of inventory this is pointless.

-Had an airlock that served an actual purpose.

-You could go from one area of the ship to the next without some stupid load screen.

-Had the slowest moving elevator made in history.

The SR-2 had:
-Had a lot of locked rooms that yet to be recruited people had the only key for. This was poor planning and annoying as hell considering your supposed to be the one in charge of the ship. You also couldn’t get to the vehicle/cargo deck. But wait you have a battle down there and can walk to the Hammerhead? Again very lame and poor game design.

-A bigger med bay but nor med pack refills? “We are going on a suicide mission, we don’t need no stinking med packs!”

-A weapons locker that usually reset your ammo type you had set up in your weapons just by looking in it. Not like a weapons locker was needed since there wasn’t enough weapons to use in the game to equip anyone with. Not to mention before you started each mission you got to choose you weapons as well. Oh yea, hated how it showed up everywhere on missions as well.

-To big with a lot of wasted empty space in it. A key example is the little ante rooms between the CIC and the research lab and armory. Put a locker there or something. Space suits anyone? For an emergency event like what happened to the last ship called Normandy?

-Inconsistent exterior effects. You go into one room, look out the window and you in ftl mode with the wavy blue line effects outside. Go to another room and its not there.

-Pointless interactive junk. A trash compactor that we can push a button on and activate. Why? “ooh look a button! Wonder what it does?” Must be practice for that N7: Endangered Research Station mission right?

-Captains Cabin: Has a cool skylight but you cant look out it. PG rated and cheesy romance cuddling scenes with you love interest, this includes the “press B to continue” pop up on the screen. Pets? Models that you cant even look at very well. A sound system that has you cycle through all its selections to find the song you want instead of just selecting the song itself.

-Pointless labels or EDI descriptions of areas of the ship. “Really you don’t say, this is the Med Bay? I thought it was Engineering.” Shepard has served on military ships probably a good chunk of his/her career. The Cerberus crew would already know the layout of the ship and your recruited guests never leave their rooms to care. We don’t give tours of the ship or take passengers for a cruise. So why have them? Don’t insult the players intelligence this way please.

-EDI (probably Joker) gave out Shepard’s email address so now I get a lot of text only e-mail messages. A lot of them imply a possible meeting or quest but none of them actually allow you to do anything with them.

Both:
-Neither ship had anyone actually move around through out the game. You see Dick and Jane sitting at a table eating for the whole mission. Even your squad mates you get are glued in their designated rooms. Give the ship some freaking life.

The SR-1 was so much better than the over sized passenger liner the SR-2 turned into.

Upgrades to the SR-2 that would be nice to see in ME3:
-Open up the whole ship to explore, all rooms and all decks from the start.

-Med pack refill station in the med bay.

-Crew that actually walks around instead of being just pointless statues.

-Since ME3 will probably be as dumbed down, sorry streamlined as ME2 was and we’ll have no inventory so adding equipment lockers for your squad is out.

-Either get rid of the weapons locker or get rid of the weapon select screen you get every time you go into a mission.

-Pay attention to details like whats outside the windows. Are we in ftl mode or just sitting around in space?

-Use the airlock for leaving the ship when docked.

-Use a cut scene like you got with the Hammerhaed for when you leave the ship by shuttle.

-Turn the briefing room into a lounge since its not used for anything but short little introductions or better yet actually use it as a briefing room like it was used in ME1. Give everyone something to say as well not just the select few who had spines.

-Not a real upgrade, but quit leaving where we docked just because I came on the ship to use the bathroom or do something.

-Add some voice dialog to the e-mails we’ll likely get in ME3. I keep thinking on how the message sent by the escaped prisoner would have impacted me if it had sound to it or hearing the familiar voice of people we met in ME1 and just recently in the game. If you need to make room for this then get rid of the useless voice over for the main codex entries.

The SR-2 was better in every respect in my opinion, it seemed more thought out as a ship. The SR-1 was good but the size of the SR-2, the better colour pallette, I liked the brighter whites and yellows. The new engine core was awesome and it just felt more like a frigate that I could live on while fighting the reapers

What I liked about the SR-1
1) Stairs. Stairs are good. Or let me even use the ladder.
2) Access to the whole ship without some AI saying it's gotta stay locked until someone wants to live in it.
3) Access to the hangar bay. Really, why design a hangar bay that we can see out the window and then not let us go there?
4) Medikit refill from the Med Bay. It has purpose.
5) Airlock. For some reason, I liked hearing "decontamination in progress..." Better than a load screen (and I don't even hate the load screens as much as others). Plus, for all the Miranda haters, I'd love to hear it say "XO Lawson has the deck." BWUAHA!
6) The engine. I like rotating mass effect generator more than pulsating disco ball.
7) Darker lighting. I don't think it makes sense for someplace like the CIC to be cast in shadows, but maybe the empty, yet explorable, hanger bay could be in darkness. Jack's hidey hole was one of my favorite areas.

What I liked about the SR-2
1) More areas to explore, even if many of them are locked for awhile.
2) The trash compactor. Anything that makes me go "what's this button do?"
3) Talking crew.
4) The soothing glow of the aquarium, even if it lies empty due to a malfunctioning AUTO FISH FEEDER.
5) I liked the design overall. More more. It's great.

What I'd like improved
1) I mentioned medikit refill? How 'bout ammo refill while we're at, for heavy weapons as well. Dammit, I didn't go mineral scanning just so I can suffer a CAIN at 97% charge.
2) Rotating the galaxy map. You know how hard it is to pick the right system when every system has a mission box hovering over it and overlapping each other?
3) A more dynamic crew. Even if you won't have them walking around, at least have them show up in a different room now and then. Poor Hadley is stuck monitoring the systems at the CIC while Hawthorne gets to stuff his face at the Mess Hall.
4) I might have mentioned an AUTO FISH FEEDER as well, right?
5) Shepard VI.
6) Some spinners, glowing neon accent lights on the bottom, and go-faster stripes. Let Joker have his lava lamps.
7) A detailed analysis of every equation, every element of how one could have survived the Omega-4 Mass Relay mission with a numerical value of the Hold the Line scores. You know, a retrospective report analysis.

-Cuddling is fine but seeing as the game is rated as Mature 17+ seeing G/PG rated bits seems a bit tame except Kelly’s dancing but that was more or less ruined by the lame “press B to continue” pop up. At least In Dragon Age you got to kiss your love interest at times and talk to them. To bad that this is the only thing you get confirming that you had a romance.

-EDI’s explanation of ship areas were rather pointless, bland and redundant to me. They lacked any actual insight to what EDI is describing. You knew where you were and at the very least could guess what the function of that room was. The Med bay for example is says it all really don’t you think? It would have been better if EDI went into more detail like list some stats for each area or mention key crewmembers. Oh, and where is the EDI stand for Kasumi’s room?

“The Medical Bay has a medical staff including Doctors Chakwas, Kline and Fredricks. Along with support medics they can treat most serious injuries in the heat of battle quick and efficiently. The medical equipment is top of the line and I might add Cerberus’s own product line, capable of treating injuries from the sentient species commonly found in the galaxy. Your not feeling ill are you Shepard? Your heart rate and temperature is within the normal levels for someone in your age and physical condition.”

Wouldn’t something like that sound a lot better than what we got? It took me a few minutes to think that up.
