I wish the trolls would stop with "don't use it, play on nightmare" such pointless posts. You strawmen don't seem to grasp the simple concept of gameplay balance.

But, but, it's a single-player game! It doesn't need balance!

Funny how the people who cry that balance isn't needed are nowhere to be found when there's talk of skills needing to be buffed.

Buffing a talent to bring it in line with other talents within a class is entirely different from buffing an entire class or nerfing an entire class.

Have the complainants played all the way thru and experienced the more powerful spells being used against them in combat? In most combats at my level, I have to contend with no less than two similar level mages using spells to the fullest advantage. I am playing on Normal - two difficulty levels below Nightmare and I find it challenging.

Refrain from judgement until you have completed at least one play thru, if you please.

Hey soloing an entire game designed for a party of 6 with a Sorcerer and honestly finding it less challenging than with a party of 6 since I didn't have to worry about Friendly Fire is clearly balanced.

I actually find it kind of funny that people complain about cone of cold, when stuff like waking nightmare, mass paralyze, and death cloud exist.

Or....glyph of repulsion, death cloud, blizzard, inferno.

/shrug.  Cone of cold is kind of like watching a magician at a kids birthday party, after you've been to see Houdini.

Assumptions, assumptions.  I've been all the way through.  The only mage who caused me trouble was the slaver mage because of the setup of the battle and because he's a boss.  Why?  Because my first priority is killing enemy mages.  They do not live.  I keep them knocked down or stunned till they're dead.  The AI does not do this to the party mages.

The only thing that pissed me off was when i taught it to Morrigan instead of learning it myself. So i had to pick the cold path for myself too. Switching between Morrigan's + my character's Cone of Cold = win. I do love this spell, i just regret learning the first level lightning spell and some other useless crap.

And hell, nothing in this game beats the spells from
BG2. Time Stop, Chain Contingency, Protection from Magical Weapons,
those are broken. This is not.

In Baldur's Gate 2 the enemies had those spells too. In DA:O the only NPC i remember using the Cone was Kangaxx v.2.0. And you could use those spells like a couple of times before having to sleep.

This.
But trolls being trolls, they are going to come up with some stupid excuse for ABSOLUTELY HAVING to use it.

Even if it was nerfed most players would demand a Mod to make it normal again, so not much point, except for the minority of players who desired it.

I've lost count of the number of times on Hard difficulty that I've frozen party members. Leliana has a habit of running straight into it, the silly moo. I like using Cone of Cold on Ogres, just as they're about to take a Mighty Swipe at my vulnerable Rogue. Stops them mid punch, enabling me to move my Rogue around the back. It's all too easy during a big conflab to accidentally freeze a partner, no matter how experienced you are. You can't move the Cone around in a proper arc, it leaps to different positions in stages, and it's difficult to aim it correctly.

It surprises me how powerful Morrigan can become. I used her in the Deep Roads Bridge to single handedly take out Baddie after Baddie. They were often dead before they reached her. Those that do get CoCced.

My favourite strategy is to get Leliana to open a door. Morrigan sends in a Fireball to knock them down, followed by Sleep. Then the Blizzard and finally Inferno. Set Hex of Repulsion on the door and pick them off one by one. Cone of Cold or Mind Blast puts paid to any unfortunates who make it past the door.

Mages are supposed to be overpowered, it's historical fact!

Also, remember this is a game. It's supposed to be fun. If Cone of Cold makes it not fun for you, don't use it. There are other ways to increase the difficulty with various arbitrary self-imposed rules. Personally, I really enjoyed nuking my party members and beating the game in the Ferelden equivalent of a band t-shirt and jeans. It would have been more fun if they complained about it more.

Storm of the Century erased all my doubts about having fun with a mage.

That, and getting one-shotted every so often.

Mages are meant to be very powerful.

Its part of the story.

Mages are way overpowered once they get Arcane Warrior/Blood Magic. Almost every game I win is the result of Blood Magic. Stick Massive Armour on an Arcane Warrior and you don't need a tank in the party.

The spell just recharges too quickly.  I was having a fun time struggling to beat these 10 mob fights in the elven ruins, but then I got CoC and it has pretty much trivialized everything in the game since then.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

*whispers*  you should have seen it before the patches Posted Image
