where can i learn how to make animations on the toolset?

you can only blend animations in the toolset, the primary animations must still be made in a 3D software. And sure is alot to grasp.

Any idea how well the animations can be blended?

Are you making a cutscene or something? Then i suggest you read this http://social.biowar...ex.php/Cutscene and the topics "play animation" there.
Blending is primarily used to visually blend the transition from one animation to the other for as short time as possible. IE one fades out while the next fades in. Additional usage of blending is additive animations that are meant to add animation over a already animated rig instead filling a transition. This means animations can be blended real well.
If you want to make a punch animation you should look if there isnt one already. If not you need 3d software ,like gmax you can create new animations. But i would think this requires lot of knowledge or will to do.
