Please notice the question mark.  I'm not making false announcements!

WoW's forums are soon going to use your real first and last name.  Kind of sucks, right?  I'm curious what the
BioWare forumites think of the system and what you would think of seeing something like that here.

Myself, I think it sucks.  It's bad enough when you beat a crazy weenie in a duel in WoW and they keep wanting a rematch, or you get gear they wanted and they **** and moan about it.  Now they could much more easily track you across Facebook or the net or such.  A chick in my old raid (back when I played) actually quit WoW and MySpace (it was that long ago) because one of our raidmates liked her (totally innocuous) picture so much he wouldn't shut the hell up.  He put together a couple idle comments and managed to call her out of the blue.  I know, cool story, bro.

I would not want to see this happen here.  :crying::crying::crying:

as long as I can say my first name is "randumb" and my last name is "vangaurd", then I am fine with them changing to it...

Eh, problem for most. However my avatar name links me to myself more so than my real name, which is strangely common where I live.

I know that anonymity can be a problem on forums, but forcing people to reveal their real names means that I won't use those forums. I prefer to remain anonymous, crazy people can google you and cause all kinds of trouble.

Call me paranoid, but there was actually one instance where a french gamer found himself stabbed after he opened the door to someone that turned out to be a lunatic player who was seriously pissed off about getting knifed in an online multiplayer match. The guy spent seven months plotting his revenge. The french gamer survived and the assailant was caught, but he isn't the only one with... issues out there.

Bottom line: Real life names? no thanks.

No, just no, and no again. Stalking people is too easy, even without the internet. No.

I would not be a part of BSN if this change took place. I would be sad about it, but anyone who knew my real name could easily find my address.

Mruh?  No, it dosn't violate some imaginary international law.  Forum participation is voluntary.

Is it a bad idea?  Hell yes.  I mean really, did Ubi fire the moron that thought a constant internet connection would stop piracy and make people happy, forcing him to apply for a job at Blizzard?

People are already insanely easy to find over the internet.  for example, a regular on my CS server got banned for being a total jerk and decided it would be fun to set up a zombie network to crash our server.  using only his steam ID and in-game name I managed to find his real name, address and place of employment.....in about an hour (having never tried something like this before).  We then reported him to the FBI cybercrimes division and he is now doing 3-5 years.   If i had his real name I could have saved myself an hour.

But I'd no longer be unique. :( And my name is highly generic, Robert Smith.

Apart from the fact that only friends can see my name and part of my surname... no, if this change happens, I am deleting my account and leaving this place.

To counter this my name is too unique. Only two people in the US have my name and the other one is my father. So I'm completely against this, too may crazy people on the internet.

Yeah but see, in 3 seconds I can tell you that there are about 233 Robert Smith's in New Jersey.  If I were some insane internet psycho out to get you for being an inferior mammal or something, i could easily find you now.

Dun dun DUNNN. :bandit:

Sounds interesting ... :police: Mayhaps people will act a little more mature if the anonymity curtain is pulled back? The ever looming threat of the person you insulted finding you and kicking your ass...

In light of Sloth of Doom's post... meh. Tracking a person down appears to be too easy as it is. I don't like the idea, but it isn't going to scare me off. Besides, anyone could do what Randumb Vanguard suggested and input a false identity couldn't they? Unless the server automatically referenced your credit card information from a prior purchase of games or BioWare points, this would be easy to bypass. Regardless, I doubt it will happen here.

I just read about this and I really like the idea. With that said, I really like that its happening to Blizzard's forums and not forums I frequent.

Hmmmm, well, i don't see any problem since i already have my name on facebook and even here on my profile, but that's just me. And yeah, i can see why some people are worried though. Internet security is top-notch only in, let's say... 60% of the world. The rest is something like "no man's land" :?

PS: Yes, i'm brazilian (part of the no man's land)

the fact that blizzard's forums are infested with trolls, i think it's a good idea. they've been needing something to minimize the nonsense over there for some time now. the worst community in MMO gaming/online can be found in blizzard's world of warcraft forums.
