i wouldn't mention that i like building model airplanes. i highly doubt some potential employer will go that far in searching somebody out. tell you what, google yourself and see what comes up. if nothing incriminating pops up, what is there to worry about? most of the people i know will only search on mypsace and facebook. if people are wise, they'll close off all their content to friends only, or make other things strictly private. i've done that to my facebook page, and i don't add anybody that i don't know and/or trust. i certainly don't post drunken pictures of myself. that's asking for trouble.

Google shows results based on links to the website. If you name is on something as big as the Blizzard boards and you google it there's a damn good chance that Blizzard site is going to be in the top 10.

this goes back to avoiding posting stupid, incriminating crap. the trolling at their site has been out of control for way too long now. of course there'll be loopholes to avoiding their new change. of course, though, you can always post stuff on your guild's forum.

Sigh.
Thankfully I have "friends" who've already done that for me. Good thing
I already have a job and people here aren't afraid of a little
extra-curricular activities. Man I hate social networking sites...

fortunately i have friends who have common sense. they don't post pics like that of their friends or of themselves. i'm lucky to have a solid circle of friends who are loyal to one another.

It's a very good thing I stopped smoking weed (and certain other life enhancers) long before I joined that stupid site. At least being drunk is legal so I have less to worry about. Good to know there aren't other examples of my former behavior out there.

Stupid idea. And being one of those paranoid types I will know Bioware is trying to kill me for sure if they do this.

For those that want to know, chances are very high to find me personally.

Slovenia currently has 79 people with my surname, only one with my name and surname (guess who? ah yes, me).

16 of which, live in my region. 6 of which live in my city. And guess what? If I am one of them, my brother is one of them, my parents, my grandmother and aunt are one of them... ahm, chances are that if you meet someone that lives in my city with my surname, you are talking to someone related to me. Furthermore, most of the 79 people in the country (about 40 of them) are ALL related to me by blood. So you get more than 66% chance to talk to someone related to me.

PS : anyone wanna kill me? come here and try. You might come out of it alive... MIGHT...

I can see why they need to do something on their boards, its a mess.
But im not sure about them displaying first and last name, that kinda creeps me out.

This idea just scream cyber-bullying, lawsuit, stalking and what not.

Maybe they should just use first or only last name. Like first name or surname+character name ect. But never your full ID.

God, I hope not... I probably have the only one who has my name in NSW, due to the fact that when my father changed his name and the name registry people couldn't read his writing properly (therefore now leaving me with a misspelt last name)

Thank goodness I don't play WoW. Out of the people I've met who play WoW, only a tiny handful are sane. If BW forums does force people to use real names too, I'll flip the loop.

I find it a little ironic that people are opposing this idea as a potential invasion of privacy while describing how one easy or difficult it would be to find you if they learn of your real name or surname. :P

It's starting with the SC2 board I believe they said. And then the WoW forum will start doing it once the next xpac hits.

Which doesn't say anything at all what you think about. I am curious.

Apart from all the 'normal' privacy issues already mentioned, having met a stalker or two in WoW is enough reason for me to think this is an extremely bad idea.

The new WoW forums will display your BAttle Net name.  The old and current forums will not.  At this time anyways.

Not saying I condone it per se, but the only reason to ever go to the WoW forums is to bawww that something needs nerfed, bawww that your server is down, or troll people that do both. I spent 4 years doing the latter.

Any actual discussion is better served on places that actually give two craps, like MMO Champion and sites of that nature.

So, for people that actually like to have meaningful conversations, this shouldn't worry you one bit.

And what about those of us who use the realm forums to co-ordinate roleplay events, or to advertise our guilds? Oh, yeah.
Anyway, MMO Champion isn't that great. The website's useful, but a lot of the community there suck.

Well, like I said, I never said I approved, and in cases like that, yeah, it's going to suck.

And I never said MMO Champ was perfect, just that most real discussion takes place outside of WoW General.

as long as you don't post anything stupid, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. people have facebook, myspace, and other social networking accounts, and i'm sure employers search those accounts on a regular basis. blizzard has been needing something like that for some time now. their forums are very unpleasant.

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

NVM, you're one of those people who actually think this makes sense. I can tell from your experiences hiring and firing one person you've identified as a WoW player that you're clearly an expert on everyone who plays WoW.

Seriously, guy, you need to chill out.

Also, I suggest some light reading.

I oppose this as an invasion of privacy that will have a disproportionate impact on people who have good reasons to maintain anonymity, whether it has to do with avoiding employers who are prejudiced against WoW players or avoiding stalkers. Having been stalked online myself, I'm not exactly fond of advertising my real name, you know? Especially not in an environment that can become as adversarial as the WoW forum.

I already know from Facebook and usenet that people are more than willing to troll under their real name. This isn't a deterrent.

i fired is sorry self because he wasn't showing up for work on time. his final excuse was that his guild needed him for an extra couple hours to clear one last boss in molten core. he figured i'd understand since i played it during that time. however, i never put that game above my real world job. if you can't figure out real life occupations are more important. i feel sorry for you.

as for myself on blizzard's site, i don't plan on posting anything on their crappy forums even after buying diablo III. i'll gladly post my musings elsewhere. my old responses on their forums have been deleted long, long ago.

as for your response to my bit about having so much time to post on here. i suggest you go work for 3 1/2 months straight, 11hrs a day, without a day off, and see how you feel afterward. all i'm waiting for now is my ****g work visa to be granted so i can work for a long period of time in canada. once i'm flown out to the mid-west, then pennsylvania, and then the final work site in new brunswick. i'll be absent from this place for probably another 3 1/2 months to who knows how long. i'll be too busy making money, managing my work crew, and hauling the wind blades and turbine generators to the wind farms to care about this place.

Anonymity is highly overrated as it is though.

Everywhere you post, you leave IP-traces, which people can track, and find out where you live, most of the time down to 85% accuracy. On forums like these and on the WoW forums, IP's are invisible to anyone but possibly moderators or possibly administrators. This is the norm, leaves the actual vital information only with people who aren't bothered with abusing it. (And if you don't trust them, I do suggest you maybe rethink why you post there)

That said, real names being replaced seems like a really bad idea unless it is optional or the information can be changed retroactively for people who wish they had given a fake name. I decided to change that here after seeing it plastered my name all over my profile.

Not because actually finding my real name is difficult mind you, but because it became one step easier than otherwise. Afterall, I post my portfolio online and reference several community made supplements I've created online and they all kinda filter through my online user-name, so I've opted to not use this as much as an anonymity filter as I have used it as a handle that is actually more friendly for other people to read, spell and pronounce. My real name is much harder for most foreigners to pronounce, I think. Also, living in Norway, I don't really fear a stalker finding me. This isn't true for everyone living somewhere more densely populated.

It is a pretty bold move by Blizzard, because this could alienate almost their entire female userbase. And it was for a very long time one of the more progressive games in that field.

To me this seems like a really bad idea. While my personal information is already out there on the net to find by people who know where to look, when my personal name is attached to everything I post it just makes it even easier for an offender to find me (really not a hard thing to do once you know my name since my last name is fairly uncommon). It's like leaving your house unlocked while living in the middle of the city; you're just asking for trouble.

I don't understand the NEED for them to use real names in place of an alias/username other than for money due to some deal with Facebook (I don't know much about it, I just skimmed over it). It really makes me feel more like a commodity and less like a person.

In years past Bioware and Blizzard have been my favorite gaming companies, and now it looks like Bioware may stand alone on the top of that list soon. Something like this just has too many possibilities for someone getting hurt and I know I couldn't personally sleep at night knowing I was in any way a part of such a tragedy by supplying personal information to the wrong person.

Alright. Maybe it won't help or ameliorate all the trolling issues they suffer. And yes maybe the harassment of female players will reach Leroy Jenkin levels. But let's keep in mind why Blizzard is doing this. To cut down on bandwidth. Their photobucket servers are maxxing out all the time. So they need to make a way to alienate people from their forums. They found it. Make it so Carl Johnson from Miami Florida 1284 E. French Ave 33128, is no longer protected by internet's veil of obfuscation.
