WoW forums to use real names, BioWare forums to follow?

I'm going to speak from experience here:
Earlier this summer, I received a call from the admissions office from the university that I currently attend. I was accused by one of the admissions officers for posting negative things about the university on the university's class of 2014 page on Facebook. This admissions officer warned me that I might face disciplinary action if I did not stop.
I was shocked, since I never even posted on the class of 2014's Facebook page.
Upon further investigation, I discovered that someone was using a sockpuppet with my name attached to it. I informed admissions office of the circumstances, and using some old-fashioned detective work, I managed to discover who was behind the sockpuppet. (It was really easy, since this sockpuppet actually joined my university's network and was friends with several people that I knew at the university.) I just simply used the wall-to-wall function on Facebook, and voila, I learned from the contents of these discussions who was behind this sockpuppet.
In short, forcing people to use real names will cause problems, since people can easily impersonate others. Given the nature of the Internet, anyone can pose as anyone without too much difficulty.

Adults are a different matter of course. They have every right to set the terms as they see fit. I still think that it's a bad move on their part and will ultimately solve less problems than it causes.

I don't think it worked out that great for Usenet, where it is/was considered standard courtesy to use your real name in many groups, and sometimes your full name would get inserted into the headers by the news server anyway, even if you changed that.

"Anonymity, is like a warm blanet to be wrapped up in."
Kudos to whom ever gets the referance.

Except all the important people already have to list their names in the game credits. All of the developers on this forum also have to reveal their name whenever they post as well.Syncrosonix wrote...
what's in a name? somebody tracked down and listed all of the important people at activision-blizzard, and posted some of their personal phone numbers. as far as their facebook profiles are concerned, they got waht was coming. if you're too stupid to figure out how to block certain information off from outsider's eyes, i have no sympathy for you. there's no way in hell i'd list my phone number ANYWHERE on any social networking sites. that's asking for trouble. the same goes for wedding info and other sensitive information.
The fact that "somebody" tracked down and did this doesn't help their cause, as it only further supports the reason why that "somebody" should also have their real name shown.
It's definitely a bad idea with lots of possible abuse, but people shouldn't act as if game developer employees don't already have to "expose" themselves to respond to the community. Thus, I can somewhat understand their reasons for doing this, especially with all the whining and trolling that occurs on the Blizzard forums these days.

i really don't care about the real ID either way. all of my old posts in the warcraft forums are so old that they've been deleted, and the realID integration will only affect people who post in their forums after the implementation. people don't have to post in their official forums, anyway.
somebody went out of their way to show just how crazy somebody can be about figuring out somebody and seeing what they're about. you've gotta admit, though, there are a LOT of crazy, no life having people who play wow. the very kind of people who'll scream and yell at somebody during a raid. somebody who blows a gasket because somebody made an honest error must be real unpleasant people in real life.

*Blizzard was terrified by the response from its users*
Glad they saw reason and it didnt catch on, its a horrible idea/theory for gamer boards. But reading thru it does give the hint that it will still happen, now the fanbase will just get it in doses with new "cool" features added to the Real ID option, and so when it has enough users. They will try and sell the idea again!.
